“No heating in the winter”
Reviewed 14 August 2010

This is a good property, far from the centre of Durban, modern and essentially fit for purpose if you are attending a conference or similar event in it. Be aware that

a) during the winter months there is no heating - the rooms are cold (fortunately there are extra blankets)
b) during my stay only one elevator worked and took forever
c) internet access is charged at unreasonable prices (8 dollars for 30 minutes)
d) breakfast is OK, lunch lacks inspiration (same food every day)

My husband surpirsed me with a voucher for a spar treatment at the Riverside spa, which is part of the hotel. The facilities are wonderful and the service is warm and friendly.

Stayed at the hotel for a conference recently. The hotel was decent. Coveniently located and well furnished. Most cab drivers knew the location and it seems a popular hotel with travellers. The restaurant is nice. Especially the breakfast. Service is attentive yet very casual. The staff are generally very friendly and affable. They have a nice bar next to the pool. Has got a good feel to it and was packed on one of the evenings. Overall it was a good place. Its apparently managed by a large South African chain. We did stay during a busy period in Durban and thus ended up paying a slightley higer rate. However I feel it would be good value for money otherwise. Largely the place was good. It just felt dull at times. Another irritating thing was the fact that there was no bottled water in the room. the minibar was empty and there were no small eats! Strange. There was a small plastic bottle in the minibar but it did not have a label with any indication on regarding potability. Lack of any things to munch in the room was baffling. It could have been on charge. Some of the wiring and plug points were tatty and one needs to struggle a bit to get them to work. All in all a good hotel. Durban as a city is nice. Its got some friendly people and some decent places to eat. One must visit the Gateway mall, eat at the Ushaka marine boat restaurant or visit the lighthouse bar at the Oyster Box hotel...Cheers!

We were there as part of a Saga tour. Prior to arriving at the hotel we visited the Botanical Gardens in Durban and can say I was very impressed by the range of colourful plants on display as well as the native birds to be seen.
The room was beautiful with lots of space and even a microwave. There was a double bed. One criticism was that the toilet was at an angle between the bath and the sink and there was a danger of hitting you head sitting down or getting up.
For dinner we had Pastrami and Salad to start and for main course there was Hake and vegetables, Chicken Curry and Mince. We had Chocolate Cake with Fresh Fruit. There was quite a choice and all of it looked good.
Breakfast was the best selection yet. I had cornflakes, first cereal in Africa, followed by Bacon, Scrambled Eggs and Lamb Sausage, which was delicious. The coffee was awful, which was a surprise for a hotel of this standing.
At breakfast one of the restaurant staff went round the dining room giving the weather forecast as well as stocks and shares and exchange rates, apparently off the top of his head. He was funny.
South Africa seems to be famous for being a meat eating nation and that is certainly reflected in the amount of meat you are given at each meal. The same can be said of fish.

The Riverside Hotel met the basic needs I had of a hotel for 2 days business in Durban. The rooms are of sufficient size and the bed was comfortable and clean. The views from my room out one side to the Indian Ocean and from the other back to the city and the new stadium were great. The bathroom was modest but served its purpose although a face clothe would have been good. The small kitchenette was handy but it would have been nice if there were some drinks in the fridge so I didn’t have to remember to get some on my way into the hotel. When I arrived in my room the front cover of the air conditioner was leaning against the wall. I discovered the next day that there was water leaking from the unit down the wall and on to the carpet. Although I mentioned this to staff on at least 2 occasions this was never attended to and the same towel I put down on first discovering the leak was still there a couple of days later when I checked out.
The food in the restaurant was good simple fare. There were plenty of choices at breakfast time. The bar on the next floor down and accessed from the side of the building was OK. It was a regular bar that appeared to be the haunt of local university students.
All up this hotel was a comfortable place to stay. I'll be sure to stay again.

Stayed here 4nts as part of a rugby tour & found it a little too remote for the city. Everything involved a taxi ride, even to get to the beach.

Our room was very comfortable & clean with views to the Absa staduim & the new football stadium. We did get disturbed by the workmen with wheelbarrows at 7 am every morning working on the grounds but we were on the ground floor.

Breakfast buffet adequate but very congested with many conference people staying there & all eating at the same time. Most of the waiting staff were students & lacked leadership but were very pleasant. The food at dinner was, however, very good & reasonably priced.

Reviewed 12 May 2009

We stayed at the Riverside from the 8th to the 12th May 2009 for the Indaba Travel and Trade show in Durban, and were not impressed at all by our time there.
Riverside is part of the Three Cities group of hotels and it seems that it is a training hotel for staff of the group. There are very many staff members in all areas and are all very friendly, but also overbearing and badgering. At breakfast expect at least 4 or 5 different staff members in varying degrees of seniority to stop and ask how things are going and if everything is allright.
Once we arrived back at the hotel in the pouring rain and there were about 8 staff members conducting a conversation in the lobby as we battled through the rain. For an alleged 4 star hotel, I would have expected these staff to at least have an umbrella handy for the porter to welcome guests in from the rain. These staff though it was quite funny that we had been caught in the rain and felt it was great entertainment to see wet and dripping guests.
The hotel is very noisy and you can forget any notion of peace and relaxation. From the room you can hear every bit of plumbing and we heard each time someone next door or above us had a shower, bath or used the toilet. We had a room facing the courtyard and pool and the noise from the restaurant staff and guests is terrible. Each morning a staff member shouts out the weather and other news headlines from early in the morning and it is unbearable and sounds just like an auction being conducted.
We ordered a taxi to attend an event and the reception had forgotten to do this, making us late for our appointment. They claim that taxis are lodged outside the front door, but summoning one of these takes time. We would recommend that you allow at least 15 to 20 minutes to organize a taxi.
Even though there are so many staff, the service is very haphazard, inconsistent and sporadic. An example is that the turn down service did not occur on one night and on one day the room had not been serviced by 14h30 causing an inconvenience as we had wanted to rest after a busy morning at the Indaba Travel Trade Show.
We ordered room service a few times and the food and service was always good. The breakfasts, however, are the same every day and after a few days of the same fare it does get rather tiresome and boring.
The laundry and pressing service was very good and we received the suit pants and shirt a few hours after handing them in.
Overall, the hotel is very expensive for what it offers and we know that there are much better hotels in Durban at a slightly higher price and would in future rather stay elsewhere. I have been a frequent guest at Three Cities Hotels and was quite disappointed by my experience at The Riverside.
