“The best place for shopping for local hand crafted items and traditional gifts.”
Reviewed 6 September 2013 via mobile

We all like to take back home what reminds us of places we visited. This market should be your first place to visit if you are that kind of a person and especially if you have a habit of bringing gifts to friends and family. But you will have to bargain and haggle with the sellers and make sure you bring down the price to the third and then go up with them until u feel its ok to buy now. Being a foreigner subjects you to being swindled especially when it comes to shopping for local items. Do not buy any of the local folklore items from the hotels or the airport before checking the same items in this market. I got very nice items for one third its cost at the hotel. I can also refer you to the utube film "A taxi driver's tour of Durban, South Africa

and get to see it at the beginning of the film.

“Doesn't merit the hype…..”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

Much to the horror of our Durban-living friends we visited Victoria Street market - and wandered around (there were 4 of us, 3 over 6ft). Did we feel unsafe? Not for a moment. Was it worth driving 30 minutes to visit. Not really. I could see why some people might feel a little threatened - but then those same people would probably feel the same in parts of London or New York. Just be sensible - don't carry a camera and a map and enjoy seeing what the locals have to offer in their street market which is outside the Works containing the Victoria Street market - on this particular day not a lot, unfortunately!

“Great souvenirs (standard/cheap)”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

This market is quite big, many shops sell the same things. All Indian sellers.
Very good opportunity to get some souvenirs, when you buy more you definitely get a 'good price!'

“Very average market in an interesting area”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

You can whiz around this very average tourist trap market in about 5 mins. But, it's worth going to get a very different perspective of Durban (at least on the drive over) from the manicured beachfront promenade, though it's probably not advisable to wander around the neighbourhood alone. We popped across the road to the meat and fish market, which was a real eye opener. Glad we went.

“Not worth it seeing.”
Reviewed 16 June 2013

I felt very unsafe, smelly and busy place. There were even people selling knifes which were just lying on a table. Was not nice. Very scary experience.
