I had a beautiful room (nr 1), situated upstairs, with a big terrace and a wonderful view over Durban city. This king-size bedded room was big with a charming bathroom, with both bathtube and shower. Very quiet location. If you don't have a car, it is neccessary to take a taxi (they are cheap in Durban), but Florida Road, where most interesting restaurants are, can be reached in less than five minutes. Lovely breakfast room.

I was concerend at your opinion on "service"- we try to do everything possible for our guests comfort and only know what is not 100% if we know what it was that was not up to scratch, so I would love to hear what the problems were so that they can be rectified.

We enjoyed an extremely pleasant 2 night stay. The room was spacious and most attractive with exceptional views from the balcony. This, coupled with a most comprehensive breakfast and genuine welcome from the host, made Essenwood one of our top stays in South Africa.

We have staid here for 3 nights. Our room was very good: spacious and with a large bathroom. Fine breakfast. Only negative aspect was impossible to sleep late: noisy early in the morning with the owner, staff and guests.
Location was great in a safe and quiet neighbourhood with all the good restaurants in the proximity.

I stayed for two nights. Owners and staff very friendly. Beautiful view (the ocean) from upstairs room. A safe place to stay and very central on Durban.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a aircon. Outside of house

Nice, pleasant place to stay. Owners and little dogs give you a true "at home" feeling. Beautiful house with nice paintings on the wall. Excellent breakfast and gentle staff.

In walking distance of botanic gardens and Florida street, Durban city can be reached by cab or bus after a walk.

I'd certainly want to stay at Essenwood again.

I would certainly recommend Essenwood House to anyone going to Durban!! We stayed there for 3 nights and John made us feel at home, besides giving us wonderful tips on tours and restaurants in town (ask him about the famous Indian one, can´t remember the name). Breakfast was fresh and delicious!! Rooms were clean, cozy and spacious!! Hope to be back some day!

I had booked a trip to Durban and, being a woman alone, wanted secure and peaceful accommodation in an area where I could walk around safely by myself. Essenwood House was just perfect. The house is restful and clean and bright and I walked around the local roads (Musgrave, Florida, Currie, Essenwood) with no problems. John Chance, is the perfect host - striking the perfect balance between caring that everything is going well for you and leaving you alone! (He saved me absolutely by lending me his SA/UK charger for my camera on my first night.) My big room was totally fabulous with its own long balcony; a large bathroom and wetroom, PLUS a study area with a nice desk and a lovely view through the palm trees and garden right across to the city. At night, the lights were magical. I would have loved to stay for 6 months and finish my PhD there! I will be going back that's for sure.
