We had a wonderful two night stay in Essenwood house. The steep driveway going down was a bit intimidating, but then you enter this little spot of heaven. The owners are very helpful, but also give you the privacy you would like. We stayed in a beautiful room on the second floor with our own private entry. The rooms are a bit rustic in design and age. Heating is via a space heater. But it just added to the feel. We sleep so peacefullly and never heard a sound except for the birds and monkeys. It was just a short drive down the hill to the beach and to Moises Stadium, and you could walk over to Florida Street during the day for meals. Highly recommend. The breakfasts are lovely and the workers there have been there for many many years and are said to be very trustworthy. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your stay with us. This is always appreciated particularly if you enjoyed what we have to offer together with everything else to see and do in Durban.
Most of the year is hot and humid here so anything other than space heaters would be a waste, so I hope that they kept you warm during your stay!
Once again many thanks,
Regards,
John Chance

We stayed for a week. We could not have received better hospitality from the host. We had a corner room with a deck with fantastic views over Durban. The room was spacious, the bed and bathroom huge, with high quality sheets, etc. The location is perfect- high up on the Berea;and the property is safe, with easy parking. The gardens are superb and the pool area a 'cool' place to be. The colonial furniture, pictures and artifacts are fascinating, though beware the chiming grandfather clock-the latter tells you the time sometimes when you least want it! Breafast was either out on the deck by the garden or in a splendid room-high ceilings, historical painitngs, and, occasionally, the three dogs pay a visit to nudge one's leg just in case people are generous enough to part with any of their breakfast! Nothing was too much trouble for our generous hosts. We wish the latter a continuing successful stay in the hospitality industry!

Room Tip: our room was on the side of the property, with its own deck and great views.

Thank you so much for your very kind words about your stay with us. I am so glad that you enjoyed your room and everything except the grandfather clock, which i could have switched to "silent" if you had mentioned it as being a bit of a bother.! We are so used to it that don't notice it at all, but we have switched it off a few times over the years for other guests who found it disturbed their sleep!
We love having guests who enjoy our family possessions and paintings, it really does make the house a home rather than a sterile environment and it is always nice to hear that others enjoy it as well as us.
Hope to see you again ,
best wishes
John Chance

We stayed at Essenwood while on a business trip to Durban. Our room was spacious with a wonderful balcony overlooking the gardens and pool. The location is great as you are a quick 10 minutes from downtown and secure parking is available. The gardens are a tropical paradise. The breakfeast is fantastic with many choices for a nutritious start to your day. We enjoyed the fresh bowl of fruit in our room each day! The owners are very helpful with eating or shopping directions. Also if you are there on a Saturday, the Essenwood market is a 1 km walk away!

Room Tip: The rooms with the balconies have a great view of sunsets and sunrises!

A beautiful old "colonial" property with a charming and helpful owner. A reminder of bygone times of gracious living. All the property is decorated with antique family furniture, photos and silver. You can relax on your own veranda with a stunning view over the bay of Durban (if you are on the first floor) or directly jump into the big and clean pool (if you are on the ground floor). The rooms are very spacious and the living area on the ground floor makes you regret that you do not own such a place and live in it.

Thank you so much for the very nice things you had to say about your stay with us.Most appreciated. I must say, it is very comforting to have all ones "family" possessions around one and even better when our guests recognise them and enjoy what we try and make like an English country house.
We hope you got home safely and of course hope to see you again,
With best wishes,
John Chance

Outstanding old "colonial" property with an extremely warm welcome by the owners. A wonderful reminder of the bygone times of gracious living. All the property is decorated with antique family furniture, the garden abounds in plants and flowers, the pool is big and clean. It is a place to relax and to travel back in time, to sip a G and T on the veranda and to be helped by the owner to find THE restaurant in Durban.
