Our stay (12 of us on a trip for graduate school) at Sica's Guest House was wonderful. The rooms were clean and airy, the grounds were beautifully landscaped and the food was delicious. The staff were courteous and friendly.

Since we were traveling in a group, I can't really speak to the ease of getting around from this spot but it is well-located. I recommend staying here!

Room Tip: Opt for any of the rooms that are not in the main house and you can't go wrong. I made a specif...

Stayed at Sica's for two nights for a business trip. The towels were frayed and stained, walls dirty, carpets stained/damaged place is just run down and unkept. I only saw a manager once when I had to pay. I wouldn't stay here again.

I was on my honeymoon in South Africa for 16days. This hotel was by far the worst. Why?
The room was dark (even darker due to a 15min power outage just after arrival - great!) and very old. Like the whole resort. It is just a big run-down place from the 50s or older I believe.
The location is also very decentral. You basically need a taxi to go downtown (or you have a rental car) but driving at night is not recommended, so you still would need a taxi at least for the evening hours).
Also, it was the only place you had to pay for Internet. In which good place do you need to pay for Internet nowadays? Its just rip-off and very customer unfriendly. Any other hotel or B&B we stayed offered it generously for free!
Finally, the breakfast was just disgusting. Totally tasteless. Sometimes I even didn't know what I was eating. And even the coffee was horrible!

To sum up:
If you like a decentral, run-down place from another time, where you get ripped-off and where you better don't eat anything you are more then welcome.

I have been staying over at Sica's during my last two trips to Durban. A delightful place very close to the centre of town. It is just far enough to get out of the "City" and still close enough to get to meetings quickly.
I like the buffet for breakfast and the fact that there is not such a big variety to chose from - all the basics are there. I will book there again for my next visit. The use of stain glass windows and the setting of the buildings gives a Colonial effect.

Visited this large B&B twice. Rooms were clean and the Friendly staff put on a good breakfast each morning with nothing being to much trouble . Eggs to order and porridge if you wanted as well.Others in our group had a good dinner there too.
The location lets this B&B down , It is at least two miles from the beach and you require a car or taxi to get you around. Many rooms have fans and no air conditioning which resulted in some unbearable nights sleep.

I spent 22 comfortable, safe, enjoyable nights on my own at Sica’s Guest House in Mayville (Durban). It was close to the UKZN Howard and Westville campuses where I needed to be at intervals throughout my stay.

The room (38) was spotless and well appointed with the only hitches being slightly decrepit plumbing (the shower head was inclined to squirt in all directions, and the loo occasionally ‘ran’), lack of a fridge in the room, and no fly screens – so there was the irritation of mosquitoes at night (solved when a friend provided a Citronella Oil Anti-insect band).

Breakfast was tip-top, and dinners were good value and tasty with something for everyone including vegetarians. Try the vegetable platter with a baked potato and pepper sauce!

Sica's staff proved attentive, helpful, friendly and efficient with good contacts with regard to taxis, tours, local amenities and airport transfers.

If you are sensitive to traffic noise, be aware that Owen Avenue is a busy road from quite early in the morning and that you might prefer a room that is set back from the road.

Overall, Sica’s in Mayville was an excellent experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor, north facing room set back from the road.
