Gibela is a very clean well run hostel which has bags of atmosphere and character. The beds are great as are the room. The hostel and the area it is in is in are very quite and all essential amenities such as restaurants, shops and banks are within easy walking distance. The owner was extremely helpfull in offering advice on where or where not to go.

I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm; the comfort and cleanliness was above average compared to other backpackers. The whole place had a very tasteful decor. The pictures you see on the website are accurate.
It's not a place for young backpackers who like to party a lot in the evenings. I would recommend it more for the more "mature" traveller. It depends on your state of mind, not on your age though. There were a lot of friendly people around.
Very nice & clean bathrooms, same goes for the communal lounge and the nice courtyard where you can have breakfast. Breakfast is included and is yummie.
Owner is very helpful and friendly, maybe a little bit stressed at times. He gives plenty of information upon arrival.
The location is in a residential area. I felt very safe (being a female solo traveller) athough there didn't seem to be a lot of security compared to all the other houses in the neighborhood. Big supermarket is 5 minutes walk; when walking back to the house after dark I felt a little bit uncomfortable simply because there are no other people walking the streets.
Location: beware, Durban is very spread out. I didn't have a car, so I walked for miles & miles, took taxis and buses. Distances on the map are deceiving. If I remember well, it took me some 30-40 minutes to walk to the beachside, so if you like the beach you might want to look for a more central place to stay. Some 5 minutes by car/taxi you can find a few streets with trendy restaurants/bars.

Excellent location, being a stone's throw from Florida Road. Secure hostel & safe area to be around which is more than can be said for other areas of Durban! The place was very clean with good communal areas & an excellent breakfast included in the morning. The owner was outstanding on providing us with information on how the Drakensburg & the best way to go about car rental. Info board in hostel is also very useful. Although slighly more than other hostels in the city, is good value for money.

We've hosteled our way around for a few years now and Gibela was a welcome stay for us with excellent cleanliness, organisation, comfort and the helpfullness of the staff. I'd definitely recommend this hostel to anyone wanting a stay in Durban. It's in a great location and it's a great price.

Gibela was a wonderful back packers to stay in, my favourite in the whole of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The beds were ridiculously comfy and the staff were really friendly and let me know where the best places to go and the ways to get there. The rooms and bathrooms were really clean. There was nothing about Gibela backpackers that i found dissatisfying and would recommend it to people of all ages.
