I know people are giving this 3 stars, perhaps more, but our group had a great experience at this hotel. First of all this hotel was recently renovated and the rooms are outstanding. You do have a long walk to your room from the lobby, but don't let this deter you. There are no elevators so if you're on the 2nd floor, you have to walk up a small flight of steps (hey, we needed the exercise!). The rooms are modern, clean, have a safe, flat screen TV and a safe. There is Wifi only in the large lounge area (perhaps this has changed). The gift shop is well stocked and prices are reasonable for T-shirts and souvenirs. The food in the restaurant is buffet style - both breakfast and dinner - and very good/not outstanding. Wine prices are reasonable. The hotel has an interior courtyard with a large weaver tree where weaverbirds keep busy all day and are quiet at night. It's truly amazing to see the birds in action. Make sure your have your camera!. Don't miss it. Kudos to the female housekeepers that loaded the luggage on our bus - God Bless them for this. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: If you have special needs, ask for a room on the 1st floor because there are no elevators.

I'd booked two standard rooms at the hotel but when we arrived they said they'd put the three of us in the Lodge. I had no idea what this meant, but was pleasantly surprised. The Lodge is just behind the hotel and is a freestanding house with a private pool. You can walk from the Lodge to the hotel along a 5-minute max lit footpath. The Lodge is 5-star while the hotel is 3-star. It has three bedrooms with three bathrooms, a very large lounge and dining room area and a fully equipped kitchen. There are outdoor showers, a large patio area and it really offers anything and everything you could need. I would recommend looking into renting the lodge as an option as it's not that much more expensive per person, but really worth the money if you have a family of four or more. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and although both were ok, dinner was buffet only. It offered enough variety, but had no fish option, for example, and I only saw one vegetarian curry option. Dinner cost R165 and breakfast R145. Try to have breakfast before the bus loads of tourists return from their morning game drive around 9 am, hungry and determined...

Dear "HarveyCapeTown",

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful standalone lodge, located behind our hotel facilities. Although our newly refurbished rooms are of a great standard and very comfortable, we can imagine you were pleasantly surprised with the upmarket standard of our lodge. It offers a bit more privacy and space than an average hotel room and is great for family visits to our beloved hotel.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Warm regards,

Newly refurbished rooms. Great staff that assisted with travel date changes, pizza for the kids, etc. Safe and secure. 15km from Hluhluwe-umfolozi gate. Please note that only a buffet is available for dinner and that there are very few options available for eating out in Hluhluwe town.

I booked a two night stay for a little family getaway for my family at this hotel, they had advertised a great family special which included activities such as a St Lucia boat trip and a game drive. I read good reviews on this site and was confident we'd have an enjoyable break. When we arrived on the 12th Of December it all seemed fine, we checked in at 14.00 and were told our vouchers for the next day's activities would be delivered to our room (they never were). After a little sightseeing we had dinner at the hotel, and retired to our room. Unfortunately this is where it all went wrong. The hotel were hosting a conference on the same weekend, and at around 20.00 pm. the delegates decided to start partying in the corridors and gardens surrounding our room. The loud and drunken screaming and shouting carried on until 3.30 AM. I called reception at 12.40 AM and asked if they had any security that could ask the guests to have some consideration for others. A very disinterested hotel employee said he would look into it, absolutely nothing was done. At around 2.00AM the revellers started bashing on our door, no security in site. I actually feared for my family's safety. Uncertain of how safe we would be to leave our room immediately we packed our bags and waited for first light to vacate our room. I checked out at reception and demanded a refund, which the manager assured me I would receive, she was very disinterested as to why we were even leaving early or unhappy with the hotel. 7 phone calls later to their accounts people,I did receive a refund for my deposit though I have not been reimbursed for the tolls or petrol I paid for to get there, or the disappointment that my family never got to have their holiday, never mind the discomfort of a four hour drive home after being awake for 24 hours solid. I would advise travellers to book ANYWHERE else in this area and I personally don't have much faith in the Protea franchise after seeing how poorly they handle their guests. There is no excuse for their poor service I wouldn't stay there even if it was free.

Room Tip: Rather book into a different hotel altogether.

Dear "Delia K",

On behalf of the entire TEAM at the Protea Hotel Hluhluwe, we sincerely thank you for your review and for sharing your disappointing experience while staying at our hotel, caused by rowdy behaviour of other guests at the hotel. Very unfortunate and clearly very disappointing for you and your family.

Myself and the management team had been actively involved on the night to try and minimise the nuisance and noise levels caused, disrupting the experience of our other guests but this turned out to be very difficult to control. I can assure you that both our security company as well as our own TEAM members tried everything on the night to minimise the disruption.

Our senior management discussed the situation with you in the morning and we immediately offered to reverse the charges of your stay. However, due to the fact that the reversal was done by credit card, it takes some days for the banks to process this, hence the delay. The reversal itself was done within the same 24 hour time period, so this wasn't - in any way - delayed from our side.

With regards to your Tour Vouchers, these were actually received by the hotel later in the evening of arrival, after which our reception team decided not to disturb you at night by delivering them to the room, but to safe keep these instead and have them ready for collection early next morning. Our apologies if you were given the impression that these voucher had not been received.

Again, your interest and concern are much appreciated. The TEAM and I do hope you will allow us the opportunity to be of service to you again and convince you of the level of hospitality on offer at the Protea Hotel Hluhluwe.

Yours faithfully,

Daniel Tharatt - General Manager

We arrived to a fast efficient check in at the Hluhluwe hotel . The hotel has a beautiful well kept garden the is very good for bird watching or just relaxing . There is also a lovely pool area with a outside bar so another great place to relax and along side it a large inside lounge with free wifi a piano and comfy leather couches . You may also see the odd peacock wandering about . The rooms are all brand new and spotless with very comfortable beds and a nice modern design . The hotel is 15 drive from memorial gate which is the closes gate to Hluhluwe park . Check out was again faultless with Phindile sending us on our way with a lovely smile . A great modern hotel offering good value and clean modern rooms .

We visited the hotel for the seccond time. Previously we had a good experience but this time was even better. The new deco of the rooms is excellent, staff very friendly and food great. We took our 2 year old son who enjoyed playing in the kids area and was amused with peacocks. I did some shopping in the gift shop that is situated in the hotel and was very happy with the prices that were lower than prices of the street sellers! I will definetely come back to this hotel next time I'm in South Africa

Food was excellent. Location is right by the game preserve. Rooms were nothing to brag about although we have stayed in much nicer places that were not nearly as spotlessly cleaned. Hotel needs some TLC. Public drinking water was good. Public areas were Okay. Peacocks and landscaping added much to the allure of the hotel. The big question is: Would we stay there again? The answer is yes, but . . . . . .
