Ezulwini Game Lodge
Reviewed 22 June 2013

Really enjoyable few days spent in this comfortable and hospitable lodge set on private gameland. Food was very good, extensive menu, scrumptious breaksfasts and typical friendly South African hospitality ensured a great stay. Rooms were comfortable with mosquito nets, aircon, room service.

A short walk to the pool and braai area, and a few minutes stroll to watch giraffe, zebra and other wildlife strolling about.

The friendly staff arranged a game drive in neighbouring Umfolozi Game Park (BIG 5) and river cruise which ended a superb stay taking in sightings of crocodile, hippo and abundant birdlife.
Thank you...we will back.

We stayed at Ezulwini as part of a tour group. Perhaps we were just in a basic room but our room was a bit average. Tiny bathroom, twin beds instead of a double and paper thin walls - we could hear our neighbours tinkle on the toilet. However it was fine and a place to sleep. It sounds like there are different room types to book so maybe you just need to go for the tree house that someone else mentioned in their review. Having said that, the staff were nice, and the grounds seemed nice although we didn't spend long there. Our group had dinner there and while the milk tart at dessert was very memorable (so yummy!) dinner in general was a bit expensive (for south africa) and not terribly special. The ladies did a little song and dance which was nice and breakfast in the morning was good. There was a very cute little jack Russell with his little coat on that we enjoyed giving some pats to!

Room Tip: I think ours was a basic room - don't go basic

We stayed here in January and loved it! our accommodation was an amazing tree house with bedroom, lounge and kitchen and a beautiful outdoor bathroom. It was glorious and very reasonably priced. This was the most unique and beautiful accommodation we had during our time in South Africa and the service was excellent to boot. In the evening at 7 the bush babies come down to the trees by the pool area to be fed and you can see them up close.
The pool area is beautiful and there is a lovely thatch bar beside it.
We didn't take advantage of the game drive while there as we were on a tight schedule so I can't comment on it but I am sure it would be wonderful.

Room Tip: Get the tree house if it's available

We stayed for five nights at Ezulwini Game Lodge in early April 2012 on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis and had a wonderful and relaxing time. When driving up to the lodge on our arrival we were greeted by giraffes walking across the track during the sunset which set the scene for a fantastic few days.

The lodge is set in beautiful grounds and we loved our room. It was tastefully decorated in a traditional way and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit basic and the front door could do with a curtain to maintain privacy, but it was peaceful and we were lucky that there were not many people around during our stay. The pool was lovely although a bit on the small side - but again we were never over-crowded! The staff were very friendly (including the dogs!) and helpful and the food delicious - we were even treated to a local dance on one of the nights. The evening fire under the stars was also the perfect end to a day of sightseeing and game drives.

It is a perfect base to visit Hluhluwe Game Reserve, False Bay and Saint Lucia - definitely recommended!

The lodge is located in a reserve where you can walk around without having to fear on of the big 5. But for sure you will encounter zebra's, giraffe and springbock. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the shower was what we expected. We stayed in the treelodge which is fun because you will be stalked by apes strolling along by night on the roof and you will be waked up by the sun shining on your bed. The breakfast is good and the dinner is a fixed menu for which you subscribe every morning during dinner. Please be aware that the gate for the reserve closes at 2100 hrs. We really recommend this lodge for people visiting Hluhluwe and Santa Lucia

At the last minute we decided to visit Zululand for the Easter weekend. Most establishments were fully booked but we were lucky enough to find Ezulwini where we stayed for three nights on a DB&B basis. The rooms were clean and comfortable, bathrooms old but the water piping hot so we enjoyed hot showers after a long day out. They have a very nice small pool, boma with a fire at night, and home cooked food.

They also have self catering cottages.

Everyday we saw zebra, girraffe and buck near our accommodation and the bird life is tremendous.

The advantage of staying at Ezulwini is that it is very central. Just a few minutes from False Bay, close to Hluhluwe Game Reserve, St Lucia and Muzi Pan.

Can recommend Ezulwini if you just need a few days in this area.
