Reviewed 15 July 2014

We have just attended a wedding at Bonamanzi. Setting is spectacular and it all went off really well.

We were a family of 5 sharing 3 rooms. Our room was basic and comfortable. Shower however did not drain and really not great having a shower with all the scum floating around and settling later to resurface. Toilet also did not flush properly and took ages to refill. In the other 2 rooms the showers barely worked. All the shower doors were also falling off and would not close.

Management needs to check these items on a regular basis. I too run and 30 bed establishment and make sure I check on these items and not wait for guests to report them. The rooms are not really private, in that the curtains on rods with plastic rings do not close either and all broken. A short person will not be able to pull them closed. When closed they still allow plenty of viewing around the sides. Don't be so mean and try and save on another 1/2m of curtaining.

We looked into the newly revamped rooms and they are much better. Done away with tiny plastic showers, and have them bigger and open with no doors that can break. Bedding too is much improved.

I see others have commented on upgrades and I totally agree. For the rates we paid was really disappointing.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts outside fine, but when the scrambled eggs turn into lumpy blue clogs its time to get rid of it. Again supervision and management guys.

Setting is great and bush atmosphere nice.

Its the attention to small things that make all the difference and suggest you seriously address those issues. Yip I agree its continuous and hard work, but that's what makes a place great and a stay worthwhile and makes you want to go back.

Room Tip: Get the new refurbished ones if staying in Lalapanzi area

Dear Mr McDonagh

Many thanks for your very constructive critique on Bonamanzi; we wish more guests would take the time to do this. As a result of your observations, we have put into place far more stringent checks and balances in the housekeeping and maintenance departments, which will only result in a better guest experience. As you may have gathered during your stay, ALL our rooms are in the process of being upgraded, so very shortly, certainly before year end, all will be of the standard you saw in the revamped rooms.

Your breakfast observation too, has been taken up with the management – and I’m sure measures will be taken to ensure tighter management presence on the floor to avoid this kind of thing occurring.

Once again I thank you for your contribution – we are continuously striving to enhance guest experience and create fabulous and magical memories for our guests – feedback is essential.

This is a really excellent place to camp. (Perhaps not quite 5 stars but 4 seems harsh!) We spent 8 great nights here. Lovely big campsites with a real bushveld feel. Private ablutions really great. Campsites situated right into Park so quiet and secluded. Bushbabies, large spotted genet and banded mongoose frequent but non intrusive visitors to the campsite. Facilities at reception excellent including jungle gym, restaurant and lounge (watched Wimbledon final while it rained!) Two things to note: 1. Game that is accessible to self drive campers is very limited. While this makes the walking option great it means driving to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (which you're probably planning to do anyway) the only option. 2. The campsite swimming pool area needs some upgrading. But let's not nitpick. This was really great and definitely value for money.

Dear Ben

Thank you for taking the time to comment on Trip Advisor. After building the 10 new executive camp sites we have been waiting for some feedback, and now that all the dust has settled after the building, the wildlife is sure to return to the area,

In order to speed the process up we have released into the self drive area Waterbuck, Zebra and Giraffe. As our guests do enjoy the safety of walking the reserve, yes you will need to travel the 20 minutes to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park for Lion, Cheetah and Wild Dog.

I thank you for mentioning the Campside pool, and we have now included that in our future projects.

We do hope to see you again in the near future.

We set up camp at campsite number 4. The campsites are relative large and are situated deep in the reserve. This makes for a great wilderness experience. The ablutions are clean and in good condition. My only suggestion would be that a pressure pump be installed because when more than one shower is used, the water pressure drops significantly. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We did not see many wild animals but the peace and quiet made up for it. Our children had a wonderful time. There is a children's entertainment area at reception.

Room Tip: I would recommend camp sites 7 to 10 as these offer private ablutions and there is a great entertain...

Dear Manfred

Thank you for your comments on our camp sites, and for the pressure pump idea.

Since your visit we have brought online camp sites 11 - 16 these too have private ablutions.

We have also reintroduced Kudu and Reed buck back onto the reserve and brought in an additional 20 Zebra, all animals were released between the camp sites and the family tree houses.

We do hope to see you again in the near future.

Sincerely
The Bonamanzi Team

We spent a weekend here in September. The booking process was easy. And the staff were even willing to go the extra mile to accommodate our requirements. In the end we decided on using the Game Lodge. This is ideal for groups of friends of family. We had more than enough space. The bedrooms were simple but sufficed for a good night's rest. Private pool which we didn't use because it was cold. The best thing about the game lodge.... The only down fall is we tried to do our own game drive (like we do at hluhluwe) but found ourselves very disappointed. Only came across more and more buck. And also the driving conditions where not favorable even though we were in a 4x4. Kitchen was well equipped. And the best was that the cleaning staff did a great job of picking up after us!

Dear S_Gangz

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your comments. Game Lodge is a favourite of our's too. Maybe your next visit can be in Summer so you can cool down in your private pool.

You will be happy to know, with the help of the recent rainfall we have regraded all our roads and they are drivable even with a little car.

I have shared your comments with the staff and especially our housekeepers who do such a great job.

Comfortable bed, good linen, well-equipped kitchen, overall spotlessly clean. Sitting on the deck of the tree-house, birds visit the trees and lawn. It is safe to walk all over the reserve and trails are well marked. Pink-throated twinspot was the bird of the trip, although perseverance is needed to find it.

Room Tip: Tree-house number 9 was just fine, cosy, private and comfortable.

The Bonamanzi Game reserve is firstly, a lovely destination in itself and secondly, an ideal location to use as a base while visiting three, or four perhaps, of the nearby KZN Wildlife parks. They offer accommodation to suit all standards (and pockets) - this includes camping with two or three privacy alternatives; chalet's and stilted tree-cabins. The reserve offers lovely walks, bird watching and game drives within their own reserve. There is a lovely deck as well as a bar overlooking the lake and a large restaurant. There are swimming pools which are ideal for the summer months.
The quality of food on offer at the restaurant was the only disappointment in what was a lovely stay.
They run a slick operation and the combined view of our touring party of 7 (adults and children) was that Bonamanzi is certainly a place that deserves more than one visit - this trip being our third!
The booking process (email) was extremely efficient, the staff were all friendly and are to be commended - from the gate guards all the way up the ladder, well done!

Room Tip: If you're camping sites 7-11 are large and well separated. There is however nothing wrong with t...

We had a two-day conference at Bonamanzi.

Firstly the conference room was all-glass walls, thatched roof, and on stilts over the edge of a dam (pond). Spectacular location to spend a few days strategising on the future of our organisation.

The only problem with the food was we couldn't stop eating. The variety, quantity and frequency were incredible and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The first evening we had a boat cruise and the second evening a boma braai (barbecue). Both were fantastic, memorable experiences.

Accommodation ranged in price and quality. I was in one of the cheaper options which was very good with the exception of a very small bath and no shower. Not a major concern as we spent very little time in the rooms. The more luxury rooms were great with satellite TV large bathrooms.

Overall one of the best conference venues I have experienced.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a shower if you can as the bath in the bath-only rooms is very small.

Dear RichardHowes

Thank you for the feedback, your conference was the first to use our new facility so we are excited that our vision has come to fruition and has had the desired effect.

You will be happy to know we are converting the bathrooms with tubs, into showers and therefore creating more space for our guests.

We would love to see you again, maybe next time having one of our famous Bush Breakfast?
