Sungulwane Hills Game Lodge
Reviewed 12 September 2011

at the diner table we had a lot of discussions with the hunters.
food was good, especially the second day: impala.
the lodge is nice, that a game drive was not possible, was rather disappointing. iMfolozi takes nearly a 1,5 h drive.
regards schliek

We had our wedding here, with 17 staying at this hotel (capacity) and about the same number staying at a lodge nearby. It was really a great place. The food was probably the best part, we had two very different but both very good meals. I really liked the grounds, too. The owners and staff could not have been more helpful, getting things ready for us and even planning our reception out by the nearby watering hole (where giraffes happened to be eating). Honestly, I could not have been happier with the accommodations, the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception, and the hotel all had a big hand in organizing all of it.

The rooms have a lodge feel. They are not fancy hotel rooms but we certainly were comfortable.

The nature walk was a bit disappointing, it was nice to remove wedding nerves but we didn't see much. We also did a game drive in the mid-afternoon, but didn't see much in the way of animals, it was probably too hot. Game drives are probably best in the morning or evening. Just staying near the watering hole, though, we saw crocodiles, giraffes, warthogs, etc. So I'd recommend asking the owners if you can have a picnic there or something.

We chose this game lodge because of its small size and its close proximity to many of the parks, and were pleasantly surprised by its large offerings and idyllic setting. Sungulwane is situated in its own private game park which is loaded with buck, zebra, white rhino... we even saw a newborn giraffe! The scenery and sunsets were spectacular. The lodge is open and airy with a deck that overlooks a watering hole where animals gather in the evening. Our hosts were very helpful in organizing trips into the bigger parks (Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve and St Lucia Wetland Park) and were full of recommendations for smaller excursions (Zulu Cultural Village, Emdoneni Lodge Animal Rehab Center). They also provided us with phenomenal meals... the dinners were fabulous! The only drawback of this beautiful lodge was our small, unspectacular room.
