We were looking for a base for our trip to Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, and Malala turned up on our search. We stayed three nights and it was just right for us - nestled in the bush, neat and clean but without the flashiness of some of the other lodges we saw. The food was excellent, and the Harvey family were good hosts. Steven the friendly wildebeest was of course the highlight. He took a liking to our hired minivan, and every morning found him lying close to it outside our chalet.
An added bonus was the large private reserve, where one can walk with the animals. You discover quickly that it's a lot harder to get close to antelope on foot than in a car.
All round, an excellent experience, we would recommend this lodge to other travellers.

We spent three wonderful nights and days at this beautiful Lodge. The family atmosphere was so relaxing. The gorgeous cottages set among the trees were very clean and comfortable. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived and when we left we felt like part of the family. The food was delicious. Nothing fancy and inedible. Just home-cooking and divine desserts!! The added attraction of a boat trip at St Lucia and a game drive in Hluhluwe made our holiday unforgettable. Many many thanks to Paul, Pete and Jane. WE WILL BE BACK. We recommend this venue to all.

Room Tip: All rooms are super

My family and I recently visited Malala Lodge from the UK after a recommendation from a friend in Durban.
The chalets were very clean, as was the entire lodge.
Jane, Pete and Paul could not have done more to make our stay so enjoyable and my children loved the game drive.
We thoroughly recommend Malala Lodge

Where do I start?
Ideally situated between St Lucia and Hluhluwe parks you find a down-to-earth lodge which has everything you could ask for. Well, if you ask for a 5-star lodge with all fancyness then you don´t find it here. But what you find is a dedicated family with the charming and friendly hostess Jane, who produces great tasting food and has information about everything, their son Paul (who is probably the best patissier in the area) and husband/father Pete whose extreme knowledge about flora and fauna is simply outstanding. Lovely three star chalets where you feel in the middle of the bush (zebras visiting the front yard), equipped for self caterers (but why cook yourself if you can have Janes and Pauls lovely food?), nice bar an pool area. Intimate atmospere (max. 18 guests) and fantastic and interesting game drives conducted by Pete.
A thoroughly enjoyable stay with very nice, genuine and enthusiastic hosts. I will come and visit again.

Room Tip: All chalets are the same and differ only in the colour of the bedspreads and decoration.

Our lodge is located in the Hluhluwe area, in the centre of the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are ideally positioned between the world-renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Mkhuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
Malala has been owned and managed by the Harvey family since 2001 and we, together with an enthusiastic team of staff, are always on hand to provide the personal attention one would associate with a small intimate lodge.
Our property has a variety of vegetation types, including lowland forest, woodland, grasslands and wetlands. In addition, Malala Lodge is at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal with over 500 species of bird having been recorded in the Elephant Coast area. The Malala Lodge birdlist currently has over 270 recorded species.
The main thatched lodge is centrally positioned within the camp and overlooks indigenous forest. Here guests can enjoy a relaxing drink in the cosy bush pub or take a dip in the palm-fringed swimming pool.
Meals are available, by prior arrangement, in the lodge dining room:
- Dinner is a home-styled three-course set menu with cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee; and
- Breakfast is a full English breakfast including cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt and tea/coffee.
Adjoining the dining room is a small reading lounge where a variety of magazines and books are available for your interest.
Malala Lodge can accommodate guests on a self-catering basis or, if you would prefer, indulge yourself in genuine home-cooked meals in the attractive thatched dining room.
Our accommodation, which nestles within the forest fringe, comprises:
- Four private, thatched, open plan chalets all with en-suite shower facilities. The chalets are 1-bedroom units which can accommodate 2 adults, or 2 adults and a child. All the chalets come with fully equipped kitchenettes, ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities.
