We booked the place via Linric club and we started experiencing the warmth of the host over the phone as she was helping us with directions to the place, she would call us as we were driving to the place to ensure that we are still on track, she would advise us to watch out for the traffic enforcements/'speed traps' around the area...we arrived at the 4 star guest house and it felt as if we had known Bessie for years,it was like arriving home, she showed us around and showed us our room where we spent the night,we woke up and would hear the waves from our room and from our private balcony we could view the ocean...we had a lovely full house breakfast by the pool deck and we could see the ocean and some sea birds...magnificent view! we were later upgraded for free to one of the Executive rooms(Room 10),the room is well decorated and is large, with extra furniture than the first room we were in,the room has got a bath big enough for two as well as a shower,we could view the ocean while taking a bath, the room has also got scented oil stands,we could light a scented candle and we could put some scented oils that would fill the entire room...the room has also got a bar fridge and a cabinet with plenty of space and shelves... well stocked tea supplies and even a coffee plunger to brew your coffee in the room,I still remember the aroma of that freshly brewed coffee I had and would enjoy it over the private balcony while viewing the ocean...after breakfast we would take a walk to the beach and also to the nearby shops for some fresh seafood,we sometimes steamed in the sauna and used the gym and we also played some edutainment games next to the gym,I mixed my own cocktails and sip them by the pool deck while watching my partner swim...the bar is an honesty /self service bar...sometimes we played by the pool table...the entire house is well decorated and the walls are full of artwork and mementos from around the world...the house is hotel standard with a personal touch and there is enough to keep you occupied:swimming by the pool, pool table, sauna, jaccuzzi, gym, games, artwork, braai area,a well stocked self service bar,and if you need tranquility you can sneak to your room or to your private balcony...Andre would sometimes help us with the car...this is really home away from home...Congrats to Andre and Bessie for winning the award for the Best Guest House in the Margate area for the second time in a row!

Good situation close to town and beaches. The Albatros is amongst the very best B & Bs we have stayed in during many visits to SA. We were given an exceptionally warm welcome and that atmosphere lasted during the length of our stay. Andre and Bessie are the best types of hosts, friendly, informative without being overbearing with a good sense of humour. The staff also are all to be commended. Our room was large, in fact, virtually a suite with a good private balcony offering panoramic views out to sea. Attractive small pool, barbecues and gym on site. Excellent value for money and obviously highly recommended!!

If you find any of my reviews within my profile helpful please use the helpful button at the bottom.

We have visited South Africa from the UK 3 times in 3 years now travelling all over South Africa, staying in a youth hostel in hermanus to the luxurious 5 Star Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks, Durban.
We have never had any bad accomodation mostly exceptional accomodation, maybe we are lucky who know's. HOWEVER one thing is for sure The Albatross Guest House in Margate is without any shadow of a doubt the best run and most accomodating place we have stayed and trust me we have stayed at some really top draw places in South Africa.
For me where the Albatross stands out head and shoulders above the rest is the friendliness of the owners and the staff. We stayed for 5 nights and Andre's wife was in america at a wedding. We arrived after a long drive from the Drakensberg with torrential rain making the journey seem longer all the way. When we got to Margate we were tired and it was one of them storms where the rain is falling that heavy the car windscreen wipers seemed to make no differance, so your tired and irritable.
We pressed the gate buzzer, within 30 seconds the gate opened, and a big bubbly smiling Andre enthusiastically ran down to us opening the car doors shaking my hand with a nice hard warm grip insisting he carried our luggage to our room.
It just got better from there, we were put into the top right hand corner family room which was vast with two rooms and a bathroom, fridge and tv and a simply huge balcony.
Andre ran everything on trust and was so warm and welcoming. His accomodation is in a stunning setting with stunning views and all the rooms are without doubt stunning to say the least and a testament to him and his wifes taste of design. As it was off season we were allowed to have a look in the empty rooms thinking maybe we were lucky and had the best room. Definately not the case as all the rooms are decorated to the highest of standards all with stunning sea side views with balcony's.
We sat in the main downstairs room a few nights chatting to andre who is an exceptional host and a really good conversationist. He runs an honesty bar and would give me a few free drinks as we sat chatting in front of the tv with the pool at the side of us as the sun was setting and I woke a few mornings with a thick head from the night before.
The location is in a very safe area not that margate seemed to be unsafe, quite the opposite to be honest. Its an easy 10 min walk to the beach from the Albatross.
I cannot praise Andre high enough as he would bend over backwards absolutley every single day to help myself and wife and daughter while we stayed there.
When we left he also insisted we email him to let him know that we had arrived back safely in the UK, its the little things in life that make all the differance and andre is certainly aware of this which is why your stay here will be so enjoyable.

I usually spend hours trawling through the thousands of reviews when going away somewhere, some reviews are good and some terrible for the self same accomodation obviously differant people expect differant things.

All I can say is if anybody has a bad word to say about the Albatross then they quite simply must be one of lifes exceptionally hard to please induviduals.
After leaving at the Albatross Guest House we drove north to Durban where we stayed at the super Luxurious Beverly Hills Hotel on Umhlanga Rocks. There is no doubt the Beverly Hills was a super place to stay and simply cannot be faulted.
HOWEVER it cost a heck of a lot more than the Albatross and after our latest 4 week trip to South Africa, its the Albatross that we will remember foundly for years to come.
This is quite simply, how Guest House's should be run.
