“Nice rooms but mediocre hotel”
Reviewed 23 October 2012

I stayed here for one night recently and I don't think I would go back. The rooms are spacious but the cost gets very high if more then one traveller stayed in the room. Balcony has a view of more apartments. Parking is between parking for flats and businesses so finding the hotel is difficult. I only had one small bag but the porter grabbed my key and bag from my hand. I thought a porter with one bag was pointless but as a whole the staff are very pushy. On arrival the water in my room was cold as the geyser had been turned off. Very irritating. The room service was okay but my lasagne was curried and that was not mentioned on the menu plus the mini bottle of wine with enough for one glass cost me R55 and it was very average wine. The breakfast in the morning was very good and the selection varied.
It was alright for one night but the nearby City Lodge and the very nice Garden Court are much better choices with welcoming staff and a more professional hotel like feel.
Oh and the giant mirror head board is just disturbing.

Just finishing a 4 night stay here and while the room is very clean, the bathroom large and the mini kitchen great for a cup of coffee I will probably try a different hotel next time. At times it feels more of a motel than a hotel. Access is from the street level directly to the rooms. Half the building shares some offices which is not any problem. The lobby then has little traffic. The staff is slow and inattentive. Try getting a 2nd cup of coffee at breakfast. Food choices ok, bellboys are though very helpful. The sitting room is nice with as noted before a wonderful sofa where I have spent much of my time as the TV cannot be seen from the bedroom. The 10sq/m balcony is great as well but often quite loud on the street below.
Facet: ok hotel, value for money ok, helpful staff, well not really. Location to mall fantastic if you need that.

Problems;
-Tv off centre from the bed. Makes no sense that you would sit in arm chairs to watch tv and not the bed although the room is large
- bed wasn't turned down on the second night of my stay
-ants in room
-fridge appeared to wasnt working
- corridor security door wasn't unlocking with key. Required a few trips to reception before I was escorted by a security guard who barged in and out of the lift before me. Turned out the problem was with the door not my key
- aircon still left the room feeling stuffy
-no faceclothes in bathroom
- highly disinterested staff from reception to housekeeping to bar tenders.
- mediocre breakfast that seems to attract a rowdy crowd. Drinks at the bar at night was the same. In fact I met some people who were setting up to "party" in one of the rooms. I pity the neighboring rooms.
- no amenities to speak of.

Pros;
-location

No reason to come back, I'm sure I can do better for the money.

I stayed here for a week on business. More than a hotel room, you get something that is more like an apartment, but without the kitchen (there's a fridge and a microwave.... but no pots, pans, plates, cutlery, etc. Nice living room area with the comfiest sofas I have ever had in a hotel room! The hotel was perfectly clean and tidy, had a nice restaurant where the food was very good (I ate here several times for breakfast and dinner). The bar is a part of the restaurant, it's ok but not really thought out as a seperate area very well.
The hotel is opposite a massive shopping mall called Gateway with lots of restaurants, some bars, cinema, etc, etc.
I walked around the immediate area to the hotel on several occasions and felt perfectly safe, there appears to be no issues with safety here and plenty of security guards patrolling around.
I think the hotel was fantastic value for money, from the room cost to the food and drink. Great for business travel.

I stayed at the Royal Palms this last week for a work trip to Durban.

The rooms are clean however the hotel lacks in atmosphere and you get the feeling that it is a little rundown. The staff are slow and the breakfast options are not the best.

The only good thing about this place is that:
1) The rooms are large and you get a balcony.
2) The location is amazing as it is right opposite the Gate Way shopping center.

I would suggest for the same price staying at one of the other hotels right next door. HolidayIn Etc.

Plus points first; large, clean, comfortable and well-appointed room with excellent internal sound-proofing. Handy having a microwave, fridge and small sink area. Good location if you want to be within safe walking distance of the Gateway retail/leisure complex. Free parking. Friendly staff. Very good restaurant.

However, don't expect a warm fuzzy feeling. Leave your room and the place is drab, dark and almost completely devoid of character. It doesn't help that the lifts and the two entrances to the hotel are located off public lobbies which are shared with the other tenants in the building and provide access to the shared car park. I stayed here for quite a while on business on my own and it was just depressing. I never got the feeling I was returning to a hotel; more like a suite located in a multi-tenure office building. All not helped by the view from the suite, which would be fine if you really, really like concrete and hard landscaping.

And another thing! If you're going to charge that much for Wi-Fi, make it a decent speed at least.
