Great value hotel. Newly built and very clean.
We didn't arrive until after 9pm and the staff were really helpful getting us checked in quickly so we could get to the restaurant before it closed.
The restaurant was fabulous... They were ready to close but remained open and cooked fabulous steaks!
The rooms were spacious and very clean. Shopping centre just across the road and the beach was a 5 min drive.
Car parking is free if you are happy to park behind the hotel or manage to get a space outside the front entrance.... Otherwise small fee for underground parking.
Overall great value hotel, would definitely recommend. Don't forget too check out the restaurant!

My first stay at this hotel and I was very impressed. I travel to Durban on business regularly and usually stay at the Southern Sun on the Durban beachfront but decided to try HI Express on the recommendation of a colleague. I am so glad that I did and I will definitely be staying here on future visits.
The hotel is on the ridge above Umhlanga Rocks and has truly fantastic views of the sea and surrounds.
I am surprised at the comment of one reviewer regarding the room being small as I certainly found space to store my suitcase. The bed was a comfortable standard double with good quality bedding and there was a two seater sofa (which looked like it could be pulled out to form another bed) as well as a built in work area with a very comfortable chair, excellent lighting and all necessary plug points, connections, etc. There is also a flat screen tv which can be comfortably viewed from either the sofa or the bed. It was all very fresh, clean and bright.
Tea and coffee making facilities are adequate and there is an ice bucket which you can use to collect ice from a machine in the lobby.
The bathroom is a reasonable size and has a large walk in shower with plenty of hot water at a good pressure. I enjoyed the large work top with plenty of space for cosmetics, toothbrush, shampoo, etc.

The hotel is two years old and as a result all the furnishings and fittings look new and up to date. The dining area is very spacious and attractively furnished. I enjoyed the breakfast which included fresh fruit, stewed fruit, cereal (good muesli as well as the usual cornflakes, etc), 3 types of yoghurt, bread, croissants, small sweet buns, toast and muffins. There was a selection of cheeses, some cold meat as well as scrambled eggs, sausage and beans which I found to be more than adequate especially as it is included in the room price unlike the majority of Durban hotels where it is normally a very pricey extra.
The staff I encountered were very friendly and ready to help.
The hotel does not serve lunch or dinner but it is very close to the gateway shopping centre which has a very large variety of restaurants from which to choose. As an alternative there are a number of "take out" menus in the room from which food can be ordered and will be delivered to the hotel reception.
All in all excellent value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

Location and view is amazing. I am used to staying in the hilton in Durban but from now on will stay here. This hotel really impressed me, especially considering it was 1/4 of the price I pay to stay in the hilton. Breakfast was great as well. Only negative was the staff, not very friendly and housekeeping seemed unorganized.

Holiday Inn Express Durban.

This is a newish hotel but it is quite a few miles north of the Centre of Durban.

The main entrance is on the second floor which can be a little confusing when arriving by car. However it is clean an tidy and has the usual lounge area attached which is a feature of most Holiday Inn Express's.

The main downside for this hotel is the room sizes. Why this should be in a new hotel I have no idea. There is not enough room to put your suitcase down without having to step over it to navigate the room. The double bed is really a slightly large single bed and led to a very uncomfortable nights sleep. It's difficult to even turn round in the bathroom!

There is a covered car park in the basement but an extra charge is levied for this service. The wifi connection is both slow and intermittent and comes at a high cost.

There is a restaurant attached to the property but you cannot access it from within the hotel. It serves very ordinary food at average prices, not really a place I would recommend. There's not enough competition so the service and food quality are low.

The staff were mostly friendly but you had to work hard to get a smile and a decent level of service.

If you need to be in Durban this is probably not the hotel for you. It's highly unlikely that we shall return. Probably our worst Holiday Inn Express experience.

Room Tip: Sea side rooms but there's no room to sit and enjoy the view.

I have stayed at plenty of HI Expresses in the UK, and as I was on a budget trip to South Africa, thought I would give this one a try having no high expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is still fairly new, so gives the initial impression of being fresh and clean. The staff both at Reception and in the dining room were pleasant and helpful. The room was your basic HI Express size, but was clean and well furnished for the price I paid. We had a room facing the sea, and the view from the 4th floor bedroom was absolutely brilliant. One plus about the room was the excellent lighting - most hotels have you struggling to see at night should you want to read before going to sleep.

I see some of the other reviewers complain about the lack of choice at breakfast, but I personally found the breakfast spread excellent. Particularly the fresh fruit and fresh fruit salad available. The dining room was spacious and well set out - unlike European HI Expresses, where the breakfast is scrambled powdered eggs and little boxes of cereal served in a crowded and cramped restaurant.

Obviously you need a car to stay here, but you need a car wherever you stay in South Africa due to the high crime rate should you attempt to walk anywhere. But the location is excellent - near the Gateway shopping mall for dinner and movies, and a close drive to the beach.

I did not use the hotel pool, but I am sure had I stayed longer I would have.

All in all, an excellent hotel and fantastic five days spent there.

Room Tip: Insist on a sea facing room. The views are brilliant and it takes away that claustrophobic feeling...

I was pleasantly surprised at the 'newness' of this hotel even though it is already two years old, having been built and opened before the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The location is perfect if you are planning leisure or business in the Northern parts of Durban. The Gateway Shopping Complex is a 10 minute walk away. The beach is not accessible by foot, however it would take you no longer than 8 minutes by car.

The reception staff were very professional and check in was well organized and easy. The rooms are well sized an very clean. We had a sea view which was spectacular. You literally have 180 deg views of the Bluff through to Umhlanga and beyond. The beds were very comfortable and you have the choice of a soft or firm pillow. The bathroom is spacious. There is no bath, just a shower which is nice and spacious. Breakfast is largely continental with a small choice of hot.

I would definitely return to this hotel again.

The hotel is relatively new. It is located within walking distance (at your own risk) of a shopping center. My room was on the seventh floor at the rear of the hotel over looking other buildings and a building site, rather than the sea view at the front of the hotel. The room was adequate and very clean.

The hotel has a small pool which is tucked away at the back of the hotel. At the front of the hotel is a terrace which can be windy but avoids the road noise and has better views.

Small free WiFi allowance.

The check in staff seemed less skilled than other HIEx hotels I've stayed in, they seemed to be unsure of the services they could provide. The late afternoon bar staff were atrocious, being short of change and unaware of the drinks they served, terrible house wine, no coffee served.

The saving grace of the hotel is it's 'newness', this will soon wear off and the inadequate training of it's staff will then reflect badly.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a sea view
