We have stayed here four times now and are in the process of planing our fifth .Sylvan Grove is a friendly haven ideal for holidays in and around Umhlanga rocks. The guest house has everything you could wish for a comfortable stay. The rooms & bathrooms are spotless & beds comfortable. The garden and pool are beautiful & well maintained. We are picked up from the Airport & stay for several nights before moving on to the Drakensberg/St. Lucia/Hluhluwe/Mkuzi.Then return for one night before.Chris drops us of at the airport Chris & Jill have lots of info. for the best places to eat & local attractions.Chris runs a taxi service if required. The breakfasts are ace & the muffins are to die for.Much more enjoyable than a stay at a large impersonal hotel.

We travelled to Durban to watch England in the World Cup semi-final. Sadly, the team were anxious to start their holidays so we ended up watching Spain and Germany instead.

The Sylvan Grove proved infinitely more reliable than Fabio Capello's men. It's great strengths were the quality/cleanliness of the accommodation, the gorgeous breakfast, the warmth of Chris and Jill's welcome and the fabulous beach near-ish by, the remarkable Gateway leisure complex, the Sharks board and the feeling of tranquility and safety on site.

On the downside, it's the sort of place where most people would say you need a car. As it happened, we didn't have one: but we don't mind a hilly 20 minute walk to and from the beach or a 30 minute stroll to Gateway (when you get bored of walking, a cab ride back is never more than fifty rand, or £5).

Sylvan Grove is the sort of place where it's affordable to do the things that we generally don't do in hotels (drinks from the minibar at sensible prices? whatever next?) Even better was getting some laundry done - everything feeling as good as new and smelling better.

While in the area - you've got to go and look at the Moses Mabhida stadium (we went to the top in the cable car). It's fabulous. And it brings back the joyous memory of Germany losing to Spain!!!

I travelled to the world cup with my 10 year old son and we stayed at Sylvan grove for the duration. We had a very safe and comfortable stay with Jill and Chris. Even though we were a long way from home we felt there was someone looking after us with clean spacious rooms, lovely breakfasts and a fountain of local knowledge to give us ideas. A car is essential and it is very easy to get around with Sylvan Grove as your base. Thoroughly recommended- we will definately return with the whole family.

A friend of mine was getting married in Durban and I had booked this accomodation quite late the night before I was due to fly. The next morning I met up with my friend at the airport and was informed that i could crash at a nutual friends place.

I contacted the guest house late morning (aprrox. 9 hours after I booked it) to advise of my situation and asked if I could be refunded the 1 nights accomodation, the manager Chris advised me that he was not sure but that he didn't think it was a problem and that he would have to speak to the online booking company. I left it at that expecting no charge on my credit card only to find that it was charged anyway the next day.

I contacted the lodge the next day and asked why I was charged for the room which I cancelled and was advised that due to the fact that the cancellation was not done within the 48hrs prior to the day I was due to arrive they couldn't do anything about it.

After several discussions with the guest house they would not budge and maintained that the cancellation should have been 48 hrs before the date I was due to arrive.... ridiculous!

If that is way they operate I would suggest that anyone and everyone avoid this place.

My partner and our two small children have stayed at Sylvan Grove twice and on both occasions we have been impressed with the warm hospitality from owners Jill and Chris. The rooms are comfortable and aboslutely spotless, fitted with all the amenities one needs when travelling with small children. The environment is very pleasant and breakfast is delicious - made even more enjoyable by Jill keeping an eye on the little ones so we could eat in peace! We have stayed in numerous guest houses in the Durban/Umhlanga area and this one is by far the most comfortable and welcoming. We highly recommend it and will stay there again.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2009

On arrival we were greeted by the owners who very friendly and shown us to our rooms. We had two rooms and they were very clean and comfortable with everything you could of asked for. Fridge with drinks, fresh milk and even some homemade biscuits. The rooms has digital TV and AC.

Our rooms overlooked the gardens where there was an immaculately kept swimming pool. It was a shame it rain the day we were there.

Breakfast in the morning was very nice, a large choose of cereals, fresh fruit and a full cooked breakfast. There were also freshly squeezed juices.

Overall I would recommend this guest house and stat there again on my next trip.
