“Fluffiness in kwaZulu-Natal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2012

Finding ourselves in kwaZulu-Natal for the first time, we had booked into the Sylvan Grove Guesthouse. Following a recommendation of my daughter, who had stayed there previously with her husband. We were given a very friendly welcome by the owners and allocated one of their 'fluffy' rooms.

The room was well equipped with every conceivable item the traveller might require. The beds were very comfortable, although the room as a whole looked somewhat cramped. Digital TV was provided at no extra cost, with some foreign channels available too (like German DW and Dutch/Belgian BVN). Internet, however, is provided through a very expensive hotspot, reflecting non-competitive conditions in this South-African market.

Sylvan Grove is situated in Umhlanga Rocks, a Durban suburb some 30 kms north of the city. UR boasts itself to be thé holiday destination of South Africa. With a coastline on the Indian Ocean that has almost fully been occupied by high rise condo's and chain hotels, this claim can hardly be justified. The town is full of opulent houses, though; here is where the rich apparently live for part or all of their time. Also in Sylvan Grove you pay a premium for this. On our South African trip, while we stayed in much better places, Sylvan Grove was by far the most expensive, yet not even halfway occupied.

Breakfast was impeccable with all the trimmings. However, the breakfast room not being air conditioned, early morning experience inevitable was of a high hot wet cloth nature.

Facit: A sound place to stay in the greater Durban area, well equipped, well looked after, very comfortable, but overpriced due to its location in an inflated suburb.

The travel agency had recommended Sylvan Grove for our stay in Umhlanga Rocks. They couldn't had made a beter suggestion. It was fantastic. We stayed for 6 days and had two rooms (5 + 6). A warm welcome and a lovely location (quiet area). We really enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was great, the afternoon swims were cooling and the service from all the staff members was great.
A lovely and memorable stay. Chris and Jill, thanks so much!!

I must say, from the time we arrived to the time we left, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Slyvan Grove BnB.

I was a bit concerned that I was not going to find decent accomodation for the holidays seeing that I only looked for accomodation in December, but one phone call to Jill and all my concerns were gone.

Once we arrived, I knew that I had been so lucky to have been able to get a booking. We felt that it was our home away from home.

The breakfasts, shew, more than enough yummy food to give you that great start to the day!

There's no doubt in my mind that I will be experiencing Chris and Jill's 4 star service again.

Room Tip: Look at their website and choose a room.

Me and my family spent 10 days at Sylvan Grove. We were allocated 4 rooms and our stay exceded all our expectations. The owners and staff went out of their way to make our stay excelent. The standard of all the suites wwas beyond our expectations and none of use wanted to miss breakfast each morning (thanks Jill for the extra weight)

We arrived a bit jetlagged after flying from Australia via Singapore and Johannesburg. We were immediately welcomed for our 6 day stay and made to feel at home. We were assigned suite No.1 with the kitchenette as we had requested. The standard of the suite was very high and beyond our expectations for the price range.
The breakfasts were more than adequate with many healthy fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries as well as tasty hot food options.
Security (can be an issue in Sth Africa) was very good and a non issue here. We were impressed with the very quiet surroundings, considering the proximity to a major highway which could not be heard at all. There is abundant native bird life which is encouraged by Jill and Chris by using strategically placed bird feeder stations.
We found the location ideal for our visit and within easy reach of the Umhlanga restaurant precinct and a short drive in our hired car (10 mins on most occasions) to Durban beaches, conference, shopping centres and sporting facilities. After a trip to Cape Town we intended to stay elsewhere but we cancelled and returned to Sylvan Grove for a further 3 days in Suite 5 and would have stayed longer if all suites were not booked out.
We have no hestiation in recommending this guest house and we have already done so to family members living in the UK and intending to visit Sth Africa.
Thanks Jill and Chris and all the best for 2012.

Arrived by car in heavy rain and pressed the button for access through the security gate. No answer. Pressed again. No answer. Waited. Used the car horn. Waited. Then the gate slid open. Staff bearing umbrellas eventually arrived but by then we were unloading the car. Our family suite was spacious and well appointed and faced the garden/pool area and although it slept four had a small patio with .... two chairs. The room contained a microwave and an honesty bar fridge which had a container filled with chilled drinking water. There was also tea, coffee and cake. At breakfast there was a good range of cereals, juices and cooked items available. Not too far to King Shaka International Airport so a good overnight stop for a flight the next day. I may be being too hard on Sylvan Grove but we felt that the place lacked 'warmth' and 'atmosphere but then that may have been us. And we had no complaints so I must give it a 'very good'. There is secure of street parking and internet access. Overall it was perfect for an overnight stop but we wouldn't have wanted to stay longer.

Room Tip: Room 1 - has a well equipped kitchen area which is useful as the B&B does not serve evening meal...

A comfortable, quiet and homely place with good service and hospitality from the owners. Bring a car. It is far out in the suburbs of Umhlangha, inland from the beach, and is a long way from Durban city centre (not the 10 minutes on the website, allow an hour). For a business visitor, the WiFi is eye-wateringly expensive, which on the upside means you can't do any more work once you are back for the night. In the family suite you'll be woken 6am by the noise from the kitchen. Not the ideal place for business trips or to stay alone, but a great place for a few nights of a comfortable and clean stay with friend or family, and your car. Eat in Umhlangha the food is way better than found in Durban.

Room Tip: The family suite is very comfortable and clean, but the next door kitchen makes it noisy from 6am
