“Weekend away with Friends”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

The Cottages are very beautiful as well as the surroundings and tranquil. Great place to go to get away from it all. Will come again. The waterfall and the church is amazing and the staff very friendly.

We spent 4 nights in Claire and Jake's fantastic Oakhurst Farm cottages.
10-15 minute drive from Ebb and Flow SanParks Wilderness resort ( base of the SOX 3 day trail run, the reason for our visit)

Located on a working dairy farm, the tastefully renovated, previous farm workers cottages greeted us at the end of a muddy, gravel road, on a freezing cold and wet August day, their bright red stable doors beckoning us happily. Drive carefully in a sedan, no problems in a 4x4.

There was a fire burning in the wood burning stove when we arrived, a wonderful touch and a warm welcome. we used the fire throughout our stay, effectively heating the open plan kitchen/ sitting area. ample wood is supplied and restocked daily by Stoffel and proceeds hereof support this small business initiative of his.
The 3 rooms are small but comfortable, clean, and made up with fresh crisp linen and duvets and additional warm blankets. Ideal for families with 2-4 children. A relaxed French Provençal style of decor mixes soft grey walls, white linen and towels and accents of red, stripes and muted duck egg greens and blues. Small sitting area with large table and bench, could perhaps be better with 2 benches as current directors chairs little unstable.
Old black and white photos of the farm and surrounding areas mounted elegantly on the walls.
Lovely outside deck with large table, benches and daybed with comfy cushions- perfect for afternoon naps. Am sure we would use this space more in summer. Great braai on the deck.
Hot water in good supply and great shower pressure, thick white fluffy towels. No bath.
Well equipped kitchen with gas used as main heat source for the kettle and cooking - electricity is used wisely with energy saving LED lights, gas water heating, no microwave, but electric toaster is provided and can be easily used. Large fridge.
Lovely touch of a ready to carry picnic basket on the work top, child friendly melamine crockery and cups, just add your own food and wine and off you go over the river at the bottom of the garden into a magical garden of woodchip paths, inter-linking secluded spots under trees, tree houses and decks and a jungle-gym.
Guests are welcome to visit the dairy at milking times and fresh milk is provided on arrival and can be ordered daily with fresh organic farm eggs.
A history of the farm and the family is provided with other information on activities in surrounding area.
Claire and Jake are available to advise on excursions, trail running and mountain biking routes and pop past the cottages daily to see that all is well.
Childcare can be arranged: excellent care and kindness to 4 kids whilst their parents went out running in the forests.
I recommend these cottages highly. Perfect for getaways with friends with children, book adjacent cottages.
We will be back and back and back...

Thank you so much for your great review. I am delighted to know that you all had a good time on Oakhurst. We still have so much to learn, always trying to add things, take away things that dont work and so on. Those directors chairs at the kitchen table have been worrying me for awhile now, I have come up with another solution and will be replacing them in the next few weeks...thanks for mentioning that. This is why the reviews are so helpful.
I really enjoyed your mail and the positive suggestions, you tlook alot of time and effort writing that and I really appreciate it
We look forward to having you all on Oakhurst again and hopefully with many more additions, extras and more comfortable kitchen table chairs.
Regards and Thank you from a beautiful Oakhurst

Jake and Claire have created a stunning array of accommodation options on their sprawling working dairy farm.
There are personal touches to be seen all over the cottages with tasteful decor and modern applicances. Everything you could need for a weekend away has been provided for in the cottages.
The fireplace and outside deck were winners for us.
This is also the ideal base for avid mountain bikers and trail runners with seemingly limitless trails out in the mountains just down the road...
It is close enough to the Garden Route attractions but far away from the hustle and bustle of the h

Our trip to Oakhurst Farm was planned at the last minute for the beginning of the June 2013 holidays and boy were we in desperate need of a break and some serious soul restoration!!!! And what a gift we found!!! A beautiful sparkling clean cottage awaited us nestling on a gentle slope alongside 4 other equally beautifully appointed cottages overlooking a lush emerald forest situated on a stunning dairy farm! My three sons have decided that dairy farming is a possible future career for all of them - thank you Jake - and my hubby, daughter and I have rated the wooden deck and comfy outside couch and table and benches as one of our favourite "peace on earth" places! The fresh creamy milk delivered to the door every day has spoilt us totally. Store bought is simply yucky in comparison. And last but not least - the tap water - what an experience! Evian wishes it tasted half as good!! Thank you Claire for handling everything, Jake for looking after us, your three beautiful girls for being so charming, and promise to see you soon!

We couldn't have asked for more at Oakhurst. Having stayed at both The Forge and The Farm Cottages, to anyone looking for the perfect spot to treat yourself and your kids to a great weekend break, you can't go wrong here. The attention to detail makes the accommodation impeccable, the surroundings are beautiful and there is ample to do and see on and around the farm. The cherry on top...Jake, Claire and their kids are brilliant hosts!

Room Tip: If it's just the two of you, The Forge is something really special. For families, The Farm Cotta...

Beautiful cottages in an amazing part of the country. Excellent family holiday, the kids loved being on the farm and seeing the cows being milked. Jake and Claire were excellent hosts. It was such a relaxing a peaceful holiday. The proximity to other places on the Garden Route was great.

Our family had no option but to declare Oakhurst as our favorite place to holiday! As we opened the bright red door we entered a home away from home, that was beautifully and lovingly prepared for our family! The cottage was absolutely amazing! Sitting on the deck overlooking the forest with a hot cup of coffee, a fire burning in the fire place and the sounds of cows lowing in the distance, is exactly what perfect weekends away, are made of. Claire and the family are just wonderful people who make you feel right at home, their warmth and love of their home translates into every part of one's stay. We also really loved the rich history and story behind Oakhurst. From visiting the little church, watching the cows getting milked, to walking through the forest to the waterfall, we enjoyed every moment of our stay. Thank you Claire and family for allowing us to share in your little piece of "heaven on earth". We would highly recommend Oakhurst to anyone wanting to experience the perfect getaway!
