“Tranquil setting, Excellent service”
Reviewed 27 December 2013

We stayed over a weekend in June 2013 with another couple. The manager, Tim, was extremely helpful and friendly. We really had nothing planned, but by the end of our first conversation the whole weekend was planned ahead.

We stayed in Moondance. The room was spacious, clean and neat, with a beautiful en-suite bathroom. I feel that the owners and management had gone to great lengths to give each room a distinct look and feel. (The other couple had stayed in Moonshadow 1, which was also beautifully decorated.)

The deck has an awesome view of the lagoon. You can also take a kayak or pedalo onto the water and we made use of this in an unforgettable sunrise paddle.

There is quite a selection on the breakfast menu to suit large or small appetites.

The cats were adorable and we also saw a bird mimicking a cat's miaau. (I had to put that in the review, just because it is darn amusing!)

Moontide guest house comes highly recommended by us. Thanks for an unforgettable weekend.

With excellent accommodation, great location, friendly and helpful staff, themed-rooms and cottages and great value-for-money; Moontide Guest Lodge didn't just meet my expectations, it exceeded them! Definately a recommended place to stay!

Room Tip: Although all the rooms are good; I'd particulary recommend the stand-alone cottages, further awa...

Will definitely be going back to Moontide - we stayed in Treetops and it was fantastic! Reception (big thanks to the manager and staff) was great, breakfasts ample and yummy, view and atmosphere magnificent. Canoes and paddleboat a treat. Do go there!

Having read the tripadvisor reviews and extensively researched accommodation in Wilderness we booked Moontide full of expectations. The position is stunning with the patio overlooking the river. We enjoyed a special pamper weekend with discounts at local restaurants and a spar massage at the local hotel. This made the stay special and really GREAT value for money.
However, the rest of the stay was disappointing. First, we did not get the room we had booked. The room we were given was well furnished with a really comfortable bed, but was SO dark and the 'scent' from the outside guest toilets situated behind the room could not be ignored.
Breakfast was not the best we have enjoyed in South Africa, quite greasy and unimaginative. We also had the occasional item of chipped china. However, the owner was charming and the manager very helpful.

Tim M, Manager at Moontide Guest House, responded to this review, 12 December 2013
I firmly believe, and always have done, that constructive criticism is the most valuable tool that anyone in the service industry has. Constructive criticism is the means by which a manager can sense how his guests react to his B&B, staff, service etc. etc.. It is the means by which a good manager can improve and grow his business. If, however, that criticism is not given to the manager in person, but put out on a platform like Tripadvisor, instead of being very constructive, it becomes DEstructive.
In this case Mr & Mrs E. did not at any stage complain about smelling toilets, greasy and uninspiring breakfasts, or anything else. Had they done so I would have been able to attend to the problems right then and there, and ensure that they had a more positive stay with us.
Tripadvisor is a very strong and necessary platform. But when people complain via a place like this, without doing so to the manager/owner, then the point of Tripadvisor is lost. If they had complained to me, and I had done nothing in response, then I deserve the strongest negative criticism possible.
I have taken the points that Mr E has made, and will act on them to ensure we improve our service to all our guests.
Kind regards Tim Marthinusen

We only stayed one night but I wish it had been a bit longer. The service and attention from the staff (especially the manager) was exceptional. We appreciated that he took the time to ask the right questions before recommending a restaurant for us (which lead to one of the best dinners we had in South Africa).

The breakfast setting on the deck is stunning and we also enjoyed sitting out among the fairy lights in the evening to enjoy a glass of wine. There is also a sweet little pool and some canoes and a paddle boat to use.

The standard of the accommodation is excellent and the Wi-Fi is good too.

Wilderness is a great place to stop off - perhaps nicer even than Knysna. This place has so much charm and the owner is a real treat. The location is perfect and quiet - great for relaxing away from the crowds for a day or two. Ask around for the best restaurants in the area - we found a great pizza place in town which was just fine.
