Time stood still at this wonderful old lady.... So dont expect what you dont pay for but expect more than you pay for. Nice views, the sound of birds, happy faces and smiles, the charm of passed times.
Much improved recently with the restaurant more cosy and nice new linen on the beds. The smell some people speak about is the typical smell of thatched roofs. If you dont like that, ask for a room without thatched roof...
Very good food at good prices...

Room Tip: river side

For the price charged, one expects a table cloth on the table in dining room, which looks like a school dining room. We also noticed the musty smell in one of the bungelows that we were shown. No complaint about our room, which overlooked the river, except the ashtray on the outside table had not been empted. Other than the above, we enjoyed our stay of 1 night

Also the reception staff need better training.
Gardens well looked after.

Room Tip: choose one on the river side, at least they don't smell musty

This is the 2nd time we’ve been staying at Fairy Knowe. It would seem that the service and the establishment itself went down a bit. Mould in the bathrooms and the breakfast was definitely not up to scratched, compared to the first time we’ve been there a year before

A bit sad and tired, old towels and sheets and blankets, duvets would be nice, and yes, a TV remote and perhaps more than just the 4 channels available, and how about some nice new fluffy pillows, not the sad, flat ones provided. Please do something about atmosphere in the "Fawlty Towers" dining room because there is none! The food could be a little more creative with a few more varieties. Confusion reigned at the front desk where my check-out bill, was calculated 3 times , very confused front desk staff. Generally lovely staff except the dear soul who cooks the eggs for breakfast, one can tell she REALLY doesnt enjoy fliiping those eggs anymore! Wonderful, stunning beautiful grounds.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river and NOT in the main building.

Thank you to Owner and Staff for a wonderful breakaway. Beautiful location love the trees and magnificent views. Gardens are well maintained. a Gem hidden between the green trees. Just want to give some advice: You can invest in some duvets instead of all the blankets and sheets it is modern and more comfortable. Rooms neat and clean and the Staff helpful and friendly. one small inconvenience we had is that there was no tv remote.

Room Tip: I think the rooms outside will be better and more private although we were in room 9 it was fine

What a setting ....fun for the whole family , lots to do , great beaches river, paddling , sparkling pool & friendly staff

BUT ... the hotel has had no investment in paint, furniture, decor or even a menu refresh since the 40's.

Dinner is Buffet style and consisted of a choice of chicken or pork on the Friday and chicken or beef on teh Saturday), The Salad Valley was 6 tubs of iceberg lettuce, feta cheeze, olives, tomatoes and cucumber. Desert was malva pudding and packet custard. No love anywhere there.

They have resorted to getting you to buy dinner and breakfast ....which is okay if you want to be reminded of boarding school or a veld school catering. If they did not do this, you would not willingly eat there or invite anyone to eat there with you.

my advice : Upgrade the restaurant, move it to somewhere where you have a great view (that could be anywhere else on your property), take enough care and pride in the food to select a menu, then tackle the rooms and common areas.

I think the worst was a sense of value that was not there, at R430 per person per night and R140 for chicken or pork = R570 x 2 people = R1140 a night. I felt cheated.
