Our 4th visit to Kingfisher & each time the welcome from, & hospitality shown by Sue & Phil has exceeded the previous visit. Both are extremely knowledgeable not just about their own area but all of Southern Africa & are always keen to hear other travellers opinions too. Guest rooms are absolutely charming - comfortable beds & chairs, tea-making facilities. The breakfast is delicious - Sue's muffins are to die for! Frankly, if you haven't stayed at Kingfisher, you haven't lived! Oh, did I mention the birds from the forest.........

We spent three nights in Kingfisher which was a real highlight of our holiday to South Africa this year.

We loved the calm of the place which is immediately apparent as soon as you arrive.
This is in part the surroundings, such as a sitting room filled with books, sofas on the veranda or watching the plethora of birds that visit the place. In reality it is the owners Phil and Sue who make you feel you are welcome guests in their home so the whole experience it is all very relaxed and natural.

Sue is very knowledgeable and generous with her advice on what to do and see so we left feeling we have to return to see everything we couldn’t manage this time around. Clearly this isn’t just our impression as there were guests who have been coming back year on year.

Sue gave us her pass so we could follow the Kingfisher trail, which starts not far from the house and finishes by the waterfall approximately
4 km away. It is worth taking your swimming costumes so you can refresh yourself with a dip in the river beneath the waterfall.

Breakfasts are a treat especially as you get to watch the local birds getting theirs at the same time – courtesy of Sue.
They eat so much you can only marvel they can fly afterwards the same applied to the humans – but that’s South Africa for you.

Thanks to you both for a lovely stay.

This was our second stay at Kingfisher, and we were thrilled to find it unchanged, except there were even more wonderful and exotic birds to see. Sue welcomed us with open arms and made sure we knew which restaurants to go to, booking them for us, and recommended beaches and a canoe trip on the peaceful river nearby. The accommodation was very comfortable and spacious, and the breakfasts were wonderful, setting us up for the day's activities. We went on our way each day with muffins for our picnic.

We will definitely come back again.

Room Tip: It is lovely having a balcony room from which the breakfasts and birdwatching can be accessed direct...

It is always wonderful to see our guests again!! It is very important to us that our guests feel happy and comfortable and I must confess that I ate a hot chocolate muffin myself this morning, couldn't resist. You are always very welcome and we would love to see you again.

Sue & Phil are 2 of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet and they take such good care of their guests. The garden is beautiful, rooms very comfortable and breakfasts delicious and ample. If you are a birdwatcher, this place is unmissable. You have a huge variety of wonderful birds at your finger tips, including the stunning Knysna Lourie.

There are several good things to recommend this guest house. The owners are most welcoming and friendly and offer great advice and information about the local area. The accommodation is modern, comfortable and en-suite but the guesthouse has the romantic character of an old colonial bungalow. There are fans but no air-conditioning. Mosquitoes are around but were not a big problem in January. The setting is wonderful, in the trees of the Wilderness National Park with a lovely wildlife-friendly garden and views across the marshes. The local birds, including some scarce endemics are fed from the veranda and provide great bird-watching and photographic subjects. The breakfast is very good. Dining in Wilderness, near-by, is varied and interesting. Walks and wildlife watching in the adjacent National Park are very productive. The beach and kayaking on the local river and marshes is great. I wish we could have stayed longer!

Room Tip: All rooms have external access to terraces or balconies. I recommend veranda rooms for wildlife watc...

We were very fortunate to have found Kingfisher for our stop on the way to Addo. Sue had told us that she doesn't normally take people for one night only but she did for us as we had booked another night on the way back. What a pleasure it was, nothing was too much trouble, even down to our restaurant booking.
Kingfisher is situated in a lovely place in Wilderness and a twitchers paradise, apparently you can have 35 difference species of birds there. I think we saw the majority when we were there. If you need to know something either Sue or Phil will be able to tell you.
There are some spectacular beaches a short drive away.
Would we go again? Yes most defiantly. Thank you Sue and Phil.
Forgot to mention, Tabard,as the are quite a few mozzies of the non malaria kind

Room Tip: Try for a room at the back

We appreciate your lovely review, thank you. I enjoyed our conversations about the birds, it is always interesting talking to other birders particularly those from other countries. It is only during the peak season that we prefer not to accept one night reservations as it is the busiest time of the year. "Tabard" is a very good idea, however we do have "plug-in" mosquito machines in every room and they work very well. We don't normally have very many mosquitoes but we had quite a lot of rain and strange humid weather and this might have made the difference. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to Kingfisher Country House, have a wonderful, happy 2014.

Sue and Phil were the best hosts on our trip and just visit the other reviews: it is all true :-)

What maybe stands out: Fantastic breakfast, esp. the muffins and the birds joining you in the morning... and then all the travel hints from Sue help you to travel without thick guide books...

This is a 'must stay' - greetings back from Switzerland!
