By all accounts your first impression of Al Fiume at River Place is wonderful.
A charming building and deck on the Hennops river. All you need now is good service and food.
This is where they fall short. An unfriendly hello followed by a dismissive seating. Not off to a good start. The waiters are not up to calibre. Friendly but rough around the edges. Not their fault mind you, the onus should be on the owners/managers to up skill their staff to acceptable service standards.
What's missing is the details. Cheap wine glasses, no table bread, 1 menu to share between 2 people, under whelming wine menu, plastic pepper grinder - the list goes on.
The food is good - but for the price I want to blown away. My wife's lamb shank (R165 - $17) was not falling off the bone. The veg was raw (not al dente) and portion size was abismal.
My spaghetti Ragu was beyond reproach. Good job.
When I treat my family to a sunday lunch I don't want it to end being a disappoining affair. Al Fiume did not deliver. For the price go to Casalinga.
