Leopards View Game Lodge
Reviewed 14 August 2012

It says on their website that Leopard’s View is a unique place, and we couldn’t agree more! What a truly wonderful few days we spent with our lovely hosts Neil & Ann, whose care and attention to detail, enthusiasm and obvious love for the bush made our stay what it was. Leopard’s View is a small lodge hidden away in Balule game reserve in a magnificent setting. The main viewing deck sits at the top of a slope, looking out over the valley and in particular over the waterhole. Delightful rooms with the added bonus that being a small lodge, you have your own space and often free run of the place. We took up the opportunity for some bush walks and game drives in Balule & loved the day trip to Kruger that Neil & Ann organised for us but we would still recommend factoring in some chill time to your stay, our favourite days were spent lazily on the deck watching the wildlife passing by. There’s also a viewing tower which is great fun & provides lovely views out over the bush. Not to mention being home to a family of resident bush babies who we instantly fell in love with! The food was all wonderful, though Ann’s cakes served each day with afternoon tea were a particular highlight! We were lucky enough to have to interrupt dinner one night to jump in the game viewer and head down to watch some of the lion pride drinking at the waterhole. We said when we left that we had arrived as guests but were leaving as friends. We’re already planning the return trip!

This was undoubtedly the highlight of our holiday. We flew direct from Cape Town to Hoedspruit (a very small, friendly, comfortable airport) and picked up an Avis car on site (quick and easy) . We appreciated an upgrade to a 4x4, as some of the Greater Kruger roads are very rough (but eminently passable). Leopard's View is just a short drive from the airport.

We couldn't have been happier with Leopard's View. Neil and Ann Kern are the most delightful hosts, for whom nothing is too much trouble. The 3 rondavels are superbly equipped and the private water hole made for excellent game watching. The meals were varied and delicious and always served at a time to suit guests' arrangements. Neil and Ann would organise any trips - we did morning and evening game drives and a boat trip on the Blyde River (superb scenery). We did a self-drive trip into the Kruger Park ; Neil and Ann provided detailed maps and excellent food for the whole day, making the trip very easy and thoroughly enjoyable. The lodge itself is the most relaxing place imaginable and amazing value for money.

We would not dream of staying anywhere else in the Kruger area.

Great home away from home. Great surroundings, great food, great conversation. Loved to sit by the fire socializing with Neil and Ann and watch the watering hole at night; saw a herd of cape buffalo come through and zebras amongst other things. Bushbabies in the tower entertained the boys. I wish we had more time at the Lodge to just chill; this was our home base while visiting Kruger.

Leopards View Game Lodge is situated in Balule Private Game Reserve which is close to Hoedspruit and not far away from the Krueger Nationalpark.

We visited this little island in the bush on our trip in October 2010 and i must say it was a great experience.

The owners, Anne and Neil Kern are realy nice hosts, lovely people, very care taking and helpful. The have a lot of knowledge about nature and wildlife

The lodge has 3 chalets and we were in the "Duiker". It is a cozy chalet with very tasteful african interior. There is an air-condition and a moskito net above the bed. Every chalet has an en-suite bathroom and a little fascility to make coffee or tea.

All 3 chalets are close to the bar and pool area but far enough away to have your privacy.

From the bar, the lounge or even from the pool you can watch the birds drinking at the little "bird pool" and you can watch other animals at the big water hole which is just a few about 200 meters away.

Neil and Anne serve breakfast, coffee with home made cake and a 3 course dinner, all included in the rates. Dinner is served outside, close to the bar and the hosts join for dinner and socialize with the guests.

The food was realy great and we enjoyed a drink at the fire after dinner.

There are a lot of things you can do in Balule and the area around Hoedspruit.
We did a game walk one morning and in the evening we had game drive with a sun downer.

You can make a day tour into the krueger (about 12 hour drive to Phalaborwa gate) or into the mountains or just do some shopping in Hoedspruit.

Leopards View Game Lodge is definately not a place only for 1 night, that would be too short. I would recommend at least 2 or 3 nights and it is either a great start for your adventure in the Krueger or it is the perfect spot to finish a great holiday before you go home.

We enjoyed the hospitality and the lodge very much and we will definately come back!

We, (my wife and I), stayed for 9 nights with Neil and Anne Kern in their Game lodge in the Greater Kruger Park. My wife seriously discussed not continuing to onward booked places, she did not want to leave, It was a fantastic experience.
The most delightful gracious hosts, who provide superb home cooked food and deserts, yum! and share their time and their evenings to socialise and charmingly befriend, and share their lives with us,
I have travelled widely both for work, and we have been to south africa before, staying in Hotels and Game lodges and I was incredibly impressed with leopards view.
This is not for the one night traveller who wants to see the big 5 on one evening. This is not for the easily bored, or who wants 5* Hotel type room service. You need to be at least prepared to be a bit interactive. Your hosts are fantastic at including everyone.
The area supports a huge variety of wildlife, and is not harrasing the animals and enviroment to supply that need- please take a few days.
This is very cheap compared to other hotels and game lodges, when you take into account lodging and food- all are supplied in price. Its all in, apart from very reasonably priced drinks- honesty bar, and game drives, and a one off payment for the entrance to the reserve..
Relax and enjoy.
I believe that this experience is becoming very hard to find, because of the personal touch, the fact that you allow the wildlife (Giraffe, warthog, antelope, buffalo), to come very close to you, as there is a water hole nearby.
The rooms are recently upgraded african rondavels, air conditioned, currently a few minor plumbing issues, which were being sorted out. The rooms were cool, comfortable and came with mosquito nets. Showers were good, slightly steep runoff, but not slippery, in one rondavel.
Location requires you to have a car, you will have to go off road (standard car no problem -dont speed), you are in a game reserve, suggest you time to arrive during daylight, try not to drive at night. Lots of things to do in locality ie blythe river canyon, cheetah sanctuary, all require travel.
Suggest this place is best for people who love bird/wildlife, there is a tower (with bushbabys) to observe and a great deck with binoculars. People who want to chill out, like us-allow yourself to be at one with nature, take a book, there is no TV, chat to your hosts and with small groups of other guests. You get what you put in.
Do book game grives and walks before you go as these do get booked up. We have seen everything but leopard (they are there, but tough to spot). Well worth doing at least one drive game /walk per day - you never know what you will see.
All the guests that we met were equally impressed, satisfied and charmed with Neil and Anne, the jeep jockey and the girls!
Next year again, if they will please have us?
