“Great option in the Blyde Dam area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2012

It was a Sunday and although we had booked the night in another lodge (self-catering) we were looking for a place to have dinner, but all restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets in the surroundings were closed and we weren't in the mood to drive another 30min to go to Hoeadspruit to dine and then back to the lodge so we asked around and the only place that had a restaurant was Swadini Resort near the dam, so we decided to go there.

We asked the price for the night and after some negotiation we got an even better price than the one we had booked before for that night so we decided to give it a go. Also, as we wanted to see the Dam in the morning, it was a plus being so close. Anyway, we had no expectations, and were imagining some small self-catering shacks which would be ok. When getting to "room" 71, we saw a chalet, with garage, a big porch and everything. Getting inside was a surprise as it was a full equipped house, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, one nice living area and a fully equipped kitchnet, with a view of a barbecue outside and a large porch. It's not anyway fancy, and although a bit old, it's a nice option for 2 couples or a family to get together for a nice cheap weekend in a beautiful area. As for the restaurant, it was nice, food is ok, clean and well organized. Great value for money.

Oh, and when you wake up and go outside, you see yourself surrounded by the immensely hight rock cliffs of the Blyde Canyon, truly a spectacular view.

My second visit in 10 years and I found it very disappointing! Reception was very disorganised, no blue permits issued for both the vehicles in our group. Unit 45 is not up to scratch. Dirty dusty carpets, walk-in cupboard not cleared after the Dept of Health visit end Nov/ beginning Dec. and insects that bite in the night when you sleep. The comforters on the beds have not seen a washing machine for a while. Main bedroom comforter not a comfort at all, stayed in the cupboard during our week long stay. Buffelspoort and Gariep are far better choices in the Forever resorts places to stay. The warm water pool overcrowded, and this was out of season! Fortunately the scenery made up for everything. Such a beautiful setting!!

Room Tip: Stay far away from the youth hostel, very noisy!

We were told about this place on one of TA forums and what a little gem. We only stayed one night and could have stayed much longer. The chalet was extremely well fitted out and did not show signs of use.
The restaurant was good and the food well prepared and presented.

Value for money - spot on.

Swadini is the perfect place for a great family holiday with the kids. The chalets are well equipped for self catering and the kids love the swimming pools, putt putt, playgrounds. The location is beautiful and there are lots of interesting things to do in the area, cheetah farms, tea at the baobab restaurant, or a sunset cruise on the dam nearby!

The hotel is in a beautiful setting-- with the canyon looming above in every direction. We stayed in a chalet-- with a kitchen, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom-- for less than $100/night total. The hotel has lots of property- with a restaurant, heated and unheated swimming pools, tour office and a convenience store. Since we were staying at the base of the Blyde River Canyon, we went on a river boat trip - which was an hour and a half long and was at 4pm. We booked the trip the same day thru the tour office at Swadini. We felt that it was a great investment for only $10/pp especially since driving around the canyon would have taken more than 4 hours. We saw the famous "3 rondovals" and "the crying face." We also saw 5 hippos in the river, and impala and kudo at the base of the canyon in the bush. If you want to go on the river boat tour, I would recommend calling the Swadini and getting the tour/activities office phone number. The boat tour is scheduled three times a day but will not run unless there are at least 4 people booked.

Had a lovely one night stay on our way back to jo burg.
Wish we could of stayed longer.
Had a lovely chalet with great facillites and good brai area.
We stayed put of season so every where was nice and quiet.
We enjoyed the outdoor pool, especially as it was heated.
The most beautiful scenary, you must go up and see the dam.
Will love to return one day.

I stayed at Swadini as an overnight stop for two days while on a motorsport event. As such, I didn't get to use the activities much during my stay as we were mainly there at night, but the location is STUNNING! The resort is situated in the Blyde River Canyon, and is nestled between very striking and imposing mountains.

Also great is the large heated pool situated by the restuarant - but be warned, once you get in you won't want to get out!

There are animals in the bushes immediately surrounding the camp. We saw Kudu, smaller buck and monkeys.

The chalets are comfortable, and as far as I noticed stock all necessary self catering goodies you might need. There is a small shop if you missed anything.

One point - because of all those mountains cell (mobile) phone reception is not very good. There are payphones but remember to buy a card for them from the shop during opening hours!

I think all the accomodation is self catering, but there is a restaurant for those not wanting the hassle.

The resort is definately worth a visit just for the breathtaking scenery!
