“Nicely renovated, quite a bargain”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014 via mobile

If you like elephants this is the place to come. We saw over 100 in a km stretch one afternoon.
Nicely renovated rooms, better than the rondavels in other camps, quite spacious with nice sitting out areas. There is an issue with bugs as we got some tiny bites.
The takeaway from the restaurant was fne.

We stayed in a hut for two nights and used the communal ablutions, which were 25 meters away from our hut. Everything was very clean, and we were positively surprised by the ambiance of the camp. There were less different kinds of animals in the surroundings, but we knew this on forehand. There were a lot of elephants though. We almost couldn't drive anywhere, without stumbling across an ellie. The restaurant looked very nice. Although not busy, it took some time before we got what we ordered. After dinner we walked around in the camp, and found ellies munching next to the fence at the east gate. Staff were very helpfull and friendly.

The pluses: Everything is new/redone since the 2013 flood. The paint is fresh, tile new, the furniture and linens new. The deck at the restaurant/reception has a nice view of the river. The elephants play in the river just outside camp every night before sunset.

The minuses: It is a sand pit due to the flooding. The entire camp is now sand which makes it feel like the desert and lack an inviting ambiance. And there are sand mites that will eat your feet alive if you wear sandals. I got them in my car and it took me two days to figure out what it was after I had been accosted on my feet and ankles. I sprayed my car carpet with Doom and it did the trick.

I can see why there is almost always availability there. There is no comparison to Mopani, for example. Night and day. I imagine I’ll be skipping this camp next time I’m in KNP.

The beautiful Shingwedzi camp on the banks of the river of the same name is newly re-opened after a devastating flood in early 2013. The buildings and grounds are freshly painted, nicely groomed and very pretty. The chalet was very comfortable. The restaurant food was basic, but good. Staff was friendly and helpful trying to deal with the usual South Africa technical glitches when processing credit card payments.

We had to gather at 0415 to start the walk. By 0615 we had walked 300m, due to the guide saying "its too dark" and then explaining everying in details for the remainder of the time. We walked a total of 2km in 3hours, saw nothing, only a dead scorpion - the 3hr walk covered only 2km on my gps. The snacks we got was a lunch bar, some cheese, cookies dried fruit and nuts - nothing special. On the way back while being in the vehicle we saw a few animals but the guide did not stop. The log book of the day stated we saw baboon, giraffe, hippo which was not true.
I understand that you see animals by chance, but the logbook oversells the sightings and if you walk further/longer you have a better chance of seeing something. The Phalaborwa gate walks cover 6-8km in 3hours and you always see something, not nothing!

Recently renovated after being closed, new fridge and kitchen utensils. Staff very friendly, helpful well stocked shop. The restaurant was closed but looked like it was about to reopen. Peaceful atmosphere and drives quieter than in the south. You could see how devastating the floods had been, huge trees down and swept down the river.

This SANPARKS camp has recently been restored following devastating floods earlier this year. We were disappointed that the chalets with loft rooms are no longer allowing use of the loft area. It makes the floor space very cramped for four beds.
The staff at this camp were by far the friendliest of all the (many) Kruger rest camps at which we have stayed. Well done - it makes Shingwedzi stand out in our happy Kruger memories.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Shingwedzi lies in the northern part of the Kruger National Park in the heart of Mopane country. A scenic game drive along the Shingwedzi River in a southeasterly direction towards the Kanniedood Dam is one of the most rewarding drives in the Park. Waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant are often seen here and the bird life is prolific. Staying overnight at Shingwedzi is an experience that will last a lifetime. It is a rustic camp that still carries the essence of the bush and is untouched by modern technology. Experience magical evenings where the accommodation is arranged in two separate circles and the glow emanating from braai (barbecue) stands cast a tranquil spell. ... more   less
