“Great surprise...”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

A truly surprise, clean, the situation and the silence around the camp is great, fantastic game viewing...the complete camp works...we defiantly back here.....
Nothing so for the first hand visiter, need to bring all your food stuff, strictly self catering....

My small family arrived at Tamboti tented camp with some trepidation - we do not camp well. To our surprise the tent was set up on top of a large deck (one of the luxury units). The main room was spacious. It sported a refrigerator, closet, and pantry, and a superb shower room. The deck terrace was large and the outside kitchen had a granite counter top! Great view over the dry river bed. Lions roaring at night. The vervet monkeys made a noisy visit one morning (make sure you throw out all garbage into the metal bins provided. Our neighbours did not and they returned to a mess). The baboons dive bomb the tent in the early hours of the morning. Overall a great experience. Location not ideal as one has few routes to choose from being on the eastern edge of the park.

Room Tip: Take a luxury tent. Well worth the money.

The setting is amazing! Other than the busy park camps Tamboti as so peaceful and you hardly ever hear people. The ablutions are very clean and there is lots of animal activity in and around the camp itself. I would only recommend that they put bigger fans in the Tents as they can become proper saunas in the day time.

Room Tip: Room one has a great view and is in the corner of the camp.

The tents and facilities were clean, and well serviced and more than adequate. The camp was also not very busy when we were there (November 2013), so this helped I guess. All the communal facilities were clean and in good working order, and the staff that we made contact with were all very friendly (unlike some of the staff in admin at the larger camps). We had the usual visitors, badgers, baboons, vervets, as well as hyaena just in front of our tent (on the other side of the fence though). We booked a night drive, and whilst ultimately the drive produced some fine sightings of game, including 7 lion and 3 hyaena, the guide was more concerned with getting from start to finish, and spoiled what could have been a unique experience for some overseas guests that were on the drive with us. THe lions started chasing some impala, and realistically, it may not have ended in success for the lion, but the guide never gave it a chance to develop. He decided time was tight and it was time to leave the scene. At the end of the drive the overseas couple were aghast at the lack of care for the guests in this regard by the guide. Feedback was given to the camp manager next day, so I hope the guides learn from this. Such a pity. We liked the setup very much and we will return, and possibly with guests of ours too. But we will make sure we are mor demanding of the guide next time, should he show this sort of tendency.

Our large group stayed in several of the luxury permanent 'tents' - I view these structures more as cabins. They are raised off the ground on posts, stairs leading to a decking area with table and chairs. The washing up/cooking area is outside - I found preparing food and cleaning up after quite nice, as you didn't just have a view of the nature, you were sort of in it. There's a braai/BBQ at the foot of the stairs, and just the right amount of lighting all around.

Inside there was a very comfortable double bed, microwave, fridge, shelving, a clean flush toilet, nice hot shower with good pressure and a vanity with sink and mirror. Hardwood floors with canvas walls and a thatched roof. Screens on the all the doors and windows. A couple of the places had squirrels 'break in' during the day and eat into some food, but you are warned to secure your food. The cheaper 'tents' have cages on their outdoor storage cupboards, which would be good in the luxury ones too, in case of 'break ins.'

You also have to be careful not to leave anything outside at night, especially in the bins, as the baboons will come and make a huge mess. There are big metal bins near each site, which the animals can't get in to. The 'tents' were cleaned and made up when we were out each day - generally good, but our cleaner took to emptying our inside bin to the outside bin on the deck, and it's not too nice to come back from a long day of animal watching to find your used 'lady items' strewn across the deck and path.

Our sites were right against the park fence near a dry river bed, and we were treated to some great animal moments as we prepared and ate dinner each night - buck, buffalo, elephants, hyena. There was even a honey badger dashing around under our tents!

A wonderful place, I would love to return and spend more time there. Relaxing and quiet.

We loved this little camp. Nice vegetation/trees between the tents. Very well designed to give you maximum privacy. Good clean bathrooms, even a nice large bathtub in the women's bathroom. Good cooking facilities. There is no restaurant or shops or drinking water here so you have to bring your own.

The tents were very comfortable and had a nice porch with views of the now dry river. Lots of birds around the tent. In the morning saw a large baboon that apparently visits frequently. To avoid the monkeys stealing your food, each tent has an area on the porch with a locker for food and the refrigerator is also behind a locked area.

The tents have electricity.

Slept very well and had a nice dinner and breakfast that we cooked ourselves.

Staff was very friendly.

Would definitely return to this camp.

The camp is very peaceful and the fixed tents allow you to hear the most amazing animal and bird sounds! The ablution and kitchen facilities are very clean and it was a pleasure using them. The tents are in a very good condition and the camp is well maintained. The staff in the camp were a very friendly and helpful.

We would surely recommend this for anyone that would like to experience camping in the KNP without the hassle of taking all your camping gear along.

Tamboti is also situated perfectly for spotting the big five and we had the pleasure of accomplishing this twice during our 4-day stay.

We would surely return to Tamboti and hopefully it will be in the near future.
