We went to Phunda Camp for a few days of camping. I love this camp as it is not as busy as the rest of the park and the ablution blocks were great , they were always clean and there was always hot water (not like some of the other BIG camps) and because it's a small camp there are no ques. There aren't a lot of animal activity but there are lots of rare birds and antelope species like Tsessebe and Roan . As the camp has a hide it was nice to go sit and see elephants and buffalo coming to have a drink at the shallow pool of water.

We arrived after a drive from JNB airport and a stop at Phalaborwa (Pick n'Pay) to stock up for the start of our 2 week trip north to south in the Kruger.

Check-in was easy, the camp shop had most of the stuff we needed . We stayed in a big well equipped tent with all the usual Kruger gear ( though I wish they would all have the same equipment -some had microwaves - others?)

Nice place - but we won't be back, we saw very little game (or anything else that went into the Arc either!)

Room Tip: Tents seem to be bigger.

I did not stay the night here, but visited during the day and traveled around the area. This appeared to be a well kept, friendly rest camp. The office personnel perhaps could be a teensy bit more friendly, but other than that, everything appeared to be in order. Again, since this is northern Kruger, this is a must for bird watchers. Make sure you bring your cameras and zoom lens.

Our group stayed in one of the permanent tents and in one of the two large guest houses. Both are modern and spacious and of far higher quality than most of the accommodation in this camp, which is generally old and cramped. Both had decks with views, and the kitchen in the guest house is large and well equipped, the bedrooms quite stylish and luxurious by KNP standards. The camp feels deep in the bush, with a lot of small wildlife in camp, and while the game viewing in the surrounding area is not always the best, it is scenic and fun to drive through. Pafuri picnic spot, 90 minutes to the north, is well worth a visit. The camp has nicely designed swimming pool, and lots of space to walk around. The campsite looks one of the nicest in KNP. The laundry room, with only one functioning washer and one drier, could do with enlargement. The shop is standard for the park, well stocked with basics, dry goods and camping items, less so for fresh things. The cleaning staff were friendly and hard working, just such a pity that the unfriendly and unhelpful lady on reception displayed such a bureaucratic and poor attitude.

Room Tip: Permanent tents and guest houses are the best

With soft twin beds, an en-suite bathroom, a private viewing deck and an outdoor kitchen, Punda Maria Tented Camp is both pleasingly simple and satisfyingly comfortable. The tents are situated on the perimeter of the Punda Maria National Parksboard gate camp at Kruger National Park, overlooking natural, open bushveld. The canvas-enclosed shower has big windows overlooking wide, green Fever Trees. Located in the far North of the Park, the setting offers a fascinating array of migrant birds, Baobab trees and a viewing site of the great Limpopo River and border to Mozambique.

The camp itself has a forest walk through indigenous bush, a welcome relief after time in the car. In the surrounding area we find the elusive Grey-Hooded Kingfisher, various colourful Rollers and Bee-Eaters, the Saddle-Billed Stork, Ground Hornbills and the cutest little Scops Owl. We also happen upon a leopard just outside the camp and cheeta further South towards Shingwedzi.

Accommodation Experience:
We had started our safari in the game-rich Southern and Central areas of the Park. And after the initial frenzy of the hunt for the Big-5, we began to slow down and appreciate the smaller, rare sightings. We were ready to move North. We watched the landscape change, becoming more lush, with greener trees and bluer waters. The zoom-lens envy settled and we became content to simply drink in the sounds, sights and smells of the wild. We spent ages at water holes and river bends, content to watch the animals go about their interesting interactions.

This is the power of a game reserve – to bring about a gentle slowing. It can be difficult to move from a very busy life straight into the abyss of free time, and game viewing offers a helpful transition into stillness. While speculating and hunting for wildlife, one can initially be busy, both physically and mentally action-oriented, but in a way that takes one completely away from the everyday stresses of life. This leads naturally into a mindful attentiveness and a quietening. Until finally one is calm and a quieter, better version of oneself - allowing a renewed reconnection and appreciation of oneself, one another and the natural world.

After driving from the Western Cape and spending three nights on the road, our reception at Punda Maria Gate was excellent and set the tone for this delightful camp. We stayed in a tented chalet, situated in the trees, with all mod cons. The chalet was in a very good state of repair and kept very clean. Everyone working at the camp was very friendly and helful, from the petrol attendant to the cleaners, and the shop. The whole camp had a special ambience and was a most relaxing place to be. We thoroughly enjoyed the game drives in the area and especially seeing the huge and beautiful trees. Roads were in good condition.

Room Tip: The tented chalets have kitchenettes and are well-situated so that one has privacy at all times.
