Lion Sands - Tinga Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 August 2011

Lodge and staff are amazing. Food is good. They feed you ever few hours, and it was all good.
Only let down is that we didn't see a cheetah or a leopard. We did get to see two lions and the rest of the big animals.
The rooms are outstanding. The bed was larger than a king. You get your own plunge pool, huge bathroom, air cond, satellite tv.
I would stay at least 3 nights. Out stay was one day too short.
Not all drinks are included in the package price, so be sure to ask when you order at the bar.

In our three days there Tinga provided the complete safari experience. The service was impeccable, food great, guides attentive and very knowledgeable and accommodations complete. Great decks, outdoor shower if you wished with a private dipping pool. Guides were determined we would see all the animals available and we did. The bush walk was a thrill with elephants not far from us as we walked. The Lodge is right on the river with animals not far. One day about fifteen elephants passed right by deck. Well managed. In a short stay we learned as much as we could from the staff and guides.

Room Tip: Get a cabine close to the main lodge.

We stayed at Tinga Legends for two nights as a part of a two week trip in South Africa. Our experience at the Legends was fantastic in every way. The accolades of previous posters on this site get a "ditto mark". The gorgeous rooms, the friendly staff, the excellent food and the high quality game drives could not have been better. Thanks, Tinga, for a very wonderful experience!

We said good bye and got transferred to Tinga Legends (about 1 hour transfer, Lion Sands will take you to Skukuza Airport and Tinga will collect you)

Here you get welcomed by…. Cold mint wet towels and ice tea! J

Another beautiful lodge! Spacious reception and lounge (very open lounge) where they serve breakfast and dinner and your teas and coffees… underneath the pool overlooking a waterhole… we had buffalos going to drink there…
Beside meals time I don’t think guests are really staying by the public areas, the rooms are way too comfortable and spacious to neglect them!
Entering our room (legends 1) on your left a lounge (two armchairs and a full sofa) and on the right your four poster bed (king size) – don’t forget – all the lodges have the highest / softest pillows I have found!
On the far right the bathroom with free standing bath by the window – that opens throughout, separated shower – and even this opens throughout – and separated toiled – with toiled and bide’… his and her sink!

In front the room has a full sliding door wall that opens completely – but can be closed by a mosquito net (hermetically closed – no gaps J) and a full veranda, with two sun beds a coffee table and a…. heated plunge pool!!!

Game drive time arrives too early!!!

But it was worth – as soon as we entered the KNP – bang! A beautiful leopard lying on a tree! And then we saw buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas….

Dinner was in the boma, food was delicious:

A selection of salads for starter

Soup

Pap and gravy with spinach and corn

Chicken and lamb chops

Desserts

Cheese

You have to be escorted by your tracker to your room

04 NOV 10 – 43 degrees!

Usual early morning wake up call – by phone and onto another game drive, still very nice, game drive starts at 05h30 and you return by 08h30…. In time for breakfast

Selection of fruits, cheeses, cereals and cold meats (buffet)
And then a set menu for your English breakfast
Off we get onto the land rover, transfer in the hot air to visit Tinga Narina (the manager Nick is a magician – he’s everywhere every time, you see him at Tinga Legends, and then you see him at Narina, always with a smile!)

The rooms are the replica of the rooms at Legend – but the legends ones are in bricks, these ones are all in wood – the lodge I would say is enjoying a better position though, right by the river!
Probably a bit more romantic than legends… but same standard, no major differences, it goes according to personal tastes.

From here we get onto the land rovers ready to go back to Skukuza onto Lion Sands – Ivory Lodge

What a great place to stay. We stayed in the Narina Lodge, we were there 2 nights and would have loved to have stayed longer. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Beautiful accommodation and the setting was just great. With the animals so close, even had a leopard with a impala kill in a tree right at our walkway and elephants at our verandah. Recommend it to anyone.

This was probably the nicest place I'll ever stay in my life. The lodge is breathtaking-- we arrived on a rainy day, and the sight of the lodge with the misty river behind it was a memorable one. The rooms were top notch-- fantastic bathroom, can't beat the view while you're in the tub, in the shower or in your private plunge pool. Romantic mosquito net enclosed bedding, and comfortable leather furnishings throughout.
Food was quite good-- we had a vegetarian in our group and she got personal attention from the chef as to her dietary needs. One complaint as to the selection of wines-- complimentary wines included one red and one white-- a dismal selection in a country with such great and affordable wines.
Really enjoyed the safaris-- knowledgeable and personable guides. We took advantage of the walking safari and enjoyed a unique perspective on the African bush. The setting, however, right on the Sabi river was so amazing. Hippos calling all night long-- we even witnessed two males fighting for territory just off the main deck of the lodge. Guides stick around during the day and are keen on chatting with guests. I was impressed by how much the guides enjoy and appreciate what they do.

Overall a high-class lodge with a lot of attention to detail.
