“A luxury safari experience!”
Reviewed 22 October 2010

We stayed at Lukimbi in early June just before World Cup. We flew into Krueger and hired a driver to take us to the lodge. We were warmly welcomed when we arrived with a nice drink. The evening game drive had just left when we arrived but they drove us out there to meet them, Good thing, since they were following a young male lion that evening! The game drives were amazing and you really do get close to the animals. Far closer than I ever would have thought. The chalets are are luxurious and comfortable. The outdoor showers are awesome. The food was gourmet and exceeded our expectations. The springbok meal was our favorite! They do provide bottle water in your chalet for you to drink but all beer / wine / alcohol is extra. We probably checked out with about an $100 bar tab but that also included a cigar. Try the Amarula liquor while you are there.
This was our first safari and I loved every minute of it. However, it was expensive and had I known that there were state run lodges in Krueger that are a 10th of the price I may have gone that route. I think next time we go, we will try and experience the land on our own a bit more. Honestly, you can see a ton of animals just driving along the roads in Krueger. It depends what you want out of a safari. There are clearly other lodges out there that are far more expensive than Lukimbi, which is why I picked it.
My only real issue with Lukimibi is that they seek tips for everyone at the end of the stay. I really think that should be built in to the rate you pay to stay there. By asking for tips and also paying for booze, it feels a bit excessive.
Also, my partner felt that the game drives were long and he felt there was little or no downtime at the lodge. The lodge is beautiful so you do want to enjoy that as well.

Lukimbi is a place that is unforgettable. The personable service, knowledge and passion for their work makes this place stand out. The food is first rate. Thanks to aaron, our guide and james, our tracker we saw incredible wild life and learned so much from them. Highly recommended as one of our very top travel experiences.

We stayed for two nights in Lukimbi. Easy to fly from JHB, but with check in etc almost the same length of time and you don't get to drive through the country side.

On arrival we were offered a welcome drink, in the reception area located right on a little water way complete with a resident Croc and terapins. After a snooze we made our way for our Game drive, shared with some other guests. Game viewing was excellent, in particular Lion cub and elephant sitings. Game drives were 3 hours long including a complimentary drink and snacks served up on a table while you watch the sunset.

Dinner the first night was on the deck, the second in the Boma, which included some great variety and a chat long into the evening around the fire.

Early Morning drive in the morning, with a wake up call from your ranger, and the some refreshment before you set off. Breakfast on return on the deck with a good hot al a carte breakfast. A walk to the river and the hippos is a great way to spend the latter part of the morning.

Rooms are located individually along a walkway. They are beautifully finished with outdoor showers large bath where you can watch the sun rise and warm up together before your game drive and good out side deck to read and relax.

Relax during the day reading a book or at the pool. If you are as lucky as us a heard of elephants will wonder past, or the elusive leopard.

Staff were friendly, but not particularly attentive, food good but not excellent.

A great place with veru nice rooms. I was in this Lodge in 2006 and 2010 and it has been changing.
First the lunch buffet in quite poor ans similar each day. Dinners are great!
Then, they try to charge every thing possible and even you have to pay water during the safari. In 2006 every drink during a safari was free of charge! Small points but it's these points which makes the difference

True luxury lodge in every sense. Individual chalets were spacious, with their own living rooms, balconeys & outdoor showers. Staff was extremely attentive and made complete effort to make us feel at home. Our dining areas were well-heated in winter - really appreciate the extra effort & little touches.
The chef is a genius - we had fantastic food all the time from the kitchen.
The game drives are good and we had plenty of opportunities to see wildlife. However we hardly went off-road, so we never really saw the animals up close. There is enough wildlife at the lodge itself though, so there is nothing to complain about.
The machines at the gym were however old and some were not working.
Would definitely stay again!

Put Lukimbi at the very top of your list if you are considering a safari in the Kruger region.

First...the people are wonderful, the food is some of the best we have ever had anywhere in the world...really! The facilities and grounds are gorgious. The guide and tracking staff is unbelievebly well trained and resourceful. This place is so wondefully run that you get no sence that you are anywhere but at your own private game lodge with your personal staff that seems to know what you want before you have even thought of it.

Unless you are headed to a fenced off Busch Gardens type of safari lodge some animals just don't want to be found, this is where serious trackers and serious guides fit into the equasion. They/we (learned) tracked several of the big five in vehicles and on foot to sucessfully locate and witness some of the Krugers' treasure. This is not a go through the motions-drive around and see the sights deal, this is the real bushveld. Our ranger/guide Dylan Brandt is the real thing; enthusastic, knowedeable and relentless. He made the bush expierence; comfortable (hot water bottle for thos chilly mornings) interesting (we learned so much about the animals the habitat, social behavior etc.)The tracking staff lead by KK were like the characters from the old Western movies in the US. The zen like Indian tracker that put his ear to a rock, smelled the wind and points in a direction and says imbube (lion).

We traveled with out 19 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. One of the things you will find is that not many kids go on safaris because the days can be pretty long and most lodges don't have programs designed for kids. Lukimbi is not designed around kids so no one should fear dozens of obnoxious kids playing "Marco-Polo" in the pool screwing up your safari expierence. What Lukimbi does is they have a "Junior Ranger" program with days full of activities that relate to the Safari expierence. They learn about tracking animals, make plaster castings. They learn and expierence natures gifts first hand. We pulled our 7 year out of school for a month, she learned more at Lukimbi from the guide staff during our stay than she could in a lifetime of reading about it in books.

Now the food, most up-market lodges have really good food, this is way beyond good food. This is three meals and two game drives a day worh of prefection. The Executive Chef and his staff put on a culinary masterpiece five times a day. On the menu or not your wish is granted...anything.

This was not out first safari nor our last, I can not imaging how any future safari expierence could be better, perhaps diffferent but not better.

There is not one bad thing I can say. Everything was top. Absolutely amazing. Each group (2-3 people) has their own "cottage" with a great view both from the porch and the bathtub. The food was delicious, the staff was spectacular, and the safaris were more than I imagined. I never thought I would be literally 6 feet from a lioness after her morning kill. Completely and totally an experience of a lifetime.
