“Tidy camp close to numbi gate”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

We had booked a night in pretoriuskop based on its proximity to numbi gate. Although the san parks website stated to avoid numbi gate, the drive there was relatively speedy, albeit bumpy. Better than going to nalelane gate, where there are easily delays of 45 mins due to roadworks.

We entered pretoriuskop just before 6 (closure), and reception was efficient. We found our 2 four-sleeper round huts easily, and although basic, they do the trick. The shower though needed some fine tuning, and was either boiling or cold.
The shop had quite a good selection, and we could find all ingredients for a braai. In the morning we walked through the camp, and it was well kept, neat and tidy.
Before we left we used the petrol station with a courteous attendant.
All in all it is a nice smallish camp in wellkept grounds. We encountered some good game around the park as well.

As a negative, the restaurant was closed. Although it was planned to reopen on march 26, we were there on April 8and it was still closed. No word of this on the san parks website!

This the first and oldest Kruger National Park camp is undergoing renovation and its restaurant temporarily closed - with no apologies for the lacking mention of this major inconvenience in the booking confirmation. A bivouac-style food shelter is a poor alternative. The chalet's appearance shows its age. The staff's nonchalant attitude was a noticeable deviation from park standards but not serious enough to spoil the animal habitat and the experience of good wildlife viewing.

We spent three nights at Pretoriuskop in December 2013.
The camp is lovely & close to Hazyview if you can brave the roads on the outside of Kruger (but we found entering via the N4 at Malelane / Crocodile Bridge gates much better).
We stayed in a family unit on the perimeter. There is a road that is used by workers on outside of fence, but you do look onto bush. Not really much of a view and we only spotted warthogs from our verandah.
Unit itself had nasty smell that we couldn't identify. Thatch roof had a few holes and was in dire need of re-thatching. This impacted heavily on the rest of our holiday as a bat came in through the roof one night and scratched one of us, which resulted in numerous visits to the doctors in Skukuza (and later out of the park) as a post rabies exposure course of vaccinations had to be taken. I went to inform the duty manager about this (as we caught the bat from his camp and it's brain was sent to Onderstepoort for a rabies test - came back negative, thankfully) and the manager was not bothered about the incident at all. I would have liked another unit with a proper roof, but understand that it was a busy time in camp. Also, I would have liked to have the incident documented, but he saw no need for that.
Anyway, we had rain the next day and needless to say, it rained in too.
All other staff from the people in the restaurant (we just had a look inside) and the lady in the shop, the cleaning lady, to the men mowing the lawn were extremely well mannered and accommodating and pleasant.
Our kids had lots of fun in the pool and we consider this a highlight of this camp.

We are a family of 5 adults so had a large 2 bedroom hut. Well equipped and clean. Such a pity the road in is terrible - rutted, no signage. Not a great introduction to a great location. Don't even bother with camp food. Kruger is for braaing! Also, not too enamoured with extorting foreign tourists for fees equivalent to the accomodation charges

We returned in November and stayed in a newly renovated unit, probably the nicest I've stayed at in Kruger. The shower was modern with new screen and the room had been newly decorated. One word of warning there was a grill to pull over the fridge and shelves and a vervet monkey troupe managed to get their fingers through and get hold of the rice despite being padlocked, recommend keeping all food stuffs well back. this unit was a great improvement on the previous.

Room Tip: Get a newly renovated one.

Dirty. Unfriendly staff. The food of the restaurant is so bad that we became sick of it. Terrible. There were even no medicines anymore in the shop. Out of stock. So I guess we were not the only ones who became sick of this dirty food. Most worst stay in South Africa. The park with the animals are great but next time we drive to another rest camp.
