“A very very special place”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Have been visiting Olifants for about 30 years now and no trip to SA would be complete without several nights here. Can just stare out at the view for hours and hours and always see plenty of game in the vicinity of this camp. Accommodation basic as is most in Kruger although some huts are more modernly fitted out than others. Always go for one with its own facilities rather than the very basic. That accommodation is not luxury does not bother us at all - it is what makes Kruger so wonderful. Its comfortable and clean. Well worth paying the little bit extra for a perimeter hut, sit back, watch the sunset, enjoy a braai listening to the sounds of the bush, get up early, watch the sunrise and head out for a great day. Heaven!

Room Tip: perimeter huts are best

Brilliant location and good value. Wish we had stayed here more than one night rather than at the other camps we visited also dont forget to take BBQ food. Resturant good but BBQ under the stars is best.

Our bungalow was clean and tidy. Towels and linens provided were clean.
We booked an accommodation with self catering and communal kitchen, the only problem was to find a communal kitchen in the camp that was working properly! We finally found one and could cook something.
We had a great view on the river and could see some hippos, elephants and antilopes on the very first morning.
We booked one sunset drive which was very nice ans we could see leopards and elephants.

Room Tip: rooms with view on the river. there are only a few, so book in advance!

The bungalow was basic but surfice for what we needed - clean and secure. The camp shops are well stocked with almost everything - although as you would expect a little more expensive for some items (stop at a Pick and Pay on the way into Kruger). We had a bangalow with a view of the river which was, for sunrise and sunset, amazing.

My first visit to Kruger and it's a huge Park. We did an afternoon walk and the night drive - both I'd recommend. The guy (I think his name was John - I'm crap at remembering names) was brilliant - he led both trips we did. Dennis was on the afternoon walk. Knowledge and spotting of animals on these tours was worth the money - some animals we wouldn't not have seen otherwise. John (?) was excellent - answered questions and was very enthusiastic to ensure we had a great experience. So I highly recommend the escorted "extra" trips you can do - especially from Olifants with John. I suspect we might of had a different tour leader to some of the other reviewers on here (hence the reason for trying to remember his name).

The only minor disappopintment is the restaurnat - it is in an amazing setting. The staff are wonderful. The menu ... is very, very basic (and, as pointed out by other reviewers, the same in every camp site). That said, the breakfast we had a Letaba one morning, was brilliant and I wondered if their evening menu was different from the other camps. Satara, Lower Sabie and Crocadile Bridge - were the same as Olifants. While I didn't go to Kruger for the food - it would have added that "memorable moment" of having an amazing meal under the clear night sky in Africa listening to the wild life around the camp and watching the fire flies moving around the bushes (they were amazing - first time I've seen them as well - like little solar lights darting in the bushes). That said, the food is okay and edible - just not as "special" as you might like.

Olifants have started to update some of the bugalows (the ones right down on the rivier - sliding doors instead of the stable doors - sink and cooking area outside - and fridge inside (out of the way of smart baboons). Kruger should start to think about updating the bungalows which I suspect haven't been touched since they were built. The other minor point is there is no wifi or internet. From a security point of view re pouchers I can understand - but maybe it's time to bring the camps upto the 21st centuary standard.

Room Tip: Stayed in bugalows 98 and 97 which were fine with a view of river. 101 upwards are in the very fron...

Overlooking the Oliphants river, looking over endless miles of bush strectching to the north and Mozambique, our two nights offered tranquility and beauty our 8 day trip to the Kruger. There's also a great viewing platform and cafe/restaurant (which we didn't sample except for drinks). Friendly and efficient staff, not the case in Satara and Skukhuza, a good shop and the whole camp well presented. The rondeval's kitchen had seen better days but our brais overlooking that bend in the river made us forget all that.
Most if not all of the sand roads nearby, which usually offer fantastic game viewing were closed for repair after the recent storms but heroic efforts are being made throughout the park to repair them. Check the website carefully if you're going soon. The bungalows overlooking the river are at a premium so book very early (or check for cancellations for visits about now if you're prepared to travel a bit further for your game drives).

Room Tip: Try, along with everyone else, to get a room overlooking the river, preferably by the perimeter fenc...

Olifants is located up on a hill overlooking a river. You can see/hear the hippos in the river. Compared to some of the other camps it is quieter/smaller. Like most of the park accommodation, the huts are fairly basic, but clean. The shop is pretty decent. We did not eat at the restaurant, and instead cooked our own food. The restaurant food that we did see in the park was quite basic/unhealthy so we were glad that we brought our own food. We had a fridge & a braai. There are electric stoves in communal kitchen areas.

The camp is perched on the cliff overlooking the olifants. Binoculars are a must. The rooms are basic but you can upgrade. You have to remember you are staying in the middle of a national park not in a city. The rooms were clean however and the mattresses were average. You didn't have to go far to see lots what with the river near by. There are morning drives and walks at all camps but the morning drive here was excellent. The great thing about the morning drive is you set out before everyone else and because the weather is still cool the animals are very active. For anywhere in Kruger a good camera is a must if you want to make the most of it. We took my Grandad's 550d which a large zoom which was perfect. My mum's normal digital camera was useless with only a 4x zoom on it. Overall a good location in Kruger but my best advise is to stay at this camp (or at least one of the northern camps) for 3days or so and then stay in a southern camp for 3days or so because this way you can see most of the park and different terrains.

Room Tip: Try to get one as close to the cliff edge as possible as here you can look over the Olifants River w...
