We visited the park in late May and the temps were already getting up there. We stayed at the adjacent Hampton Inn and you can walk into the park from the hotel. If you drive in they charge a fee per car. The park is mostly a RV camping area and a boat launch with some beach access. Good clean bathrooms. There is not much shade so this is a late evening or early morning stop. We hiked the Sunset Trail and saw quite a few birds even though the morning was heating up.
We stumbled on a small cactus garden called Arroyo de Camino, not really part of the park but very much worth a quick stop. A very birdy place with most of the local cactus on display. A cool thing to do especially if you have kids: bring a black light flashlight, very cheap, and walk in the scrub behind the camping area at night. The scorpions will glow in the dark under black light and they are easy to find back here. We saw over 20 within 20 minutes.
