My family stayed at the Ranch Hotel Polokwane, and my husband and I were treated to early morning runs around the estate with Paul the owner's son and Ranch General Manager, during which we were able to see zebra, many buck, giraffe and many birds including crows near the Hyaena enclosure.

We went on a game drive during which we were taken to the cat enclosure, where we could actually cuddle baby lions and stroke the tame cheetahs. The Ranch has tame, hand reared lions in beautiful condition, as are the cheetahs. We loved interacting with these big cats.

Over and above this, this family run hotel is comfortable and welcoming. My boys had great fun in the outdoor pools and jacuzzi, and we enjoyed the good food and all the amenities available, including the mashie golf course.

We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: New rooms on the golf course self catering side but best value from the family rooms at the Hotel

On our way north we stopped over at The Ranch. The roads were busy and we were looking for a comfortable stay over - nothing more and nothing less. The restaurant proved to be a nice treat - they had a buffet style and a fine-dining alternative. After being sent away because I was wearing shorts (well down to the staff, they ensured that the standard was maintained) I returned after having changed, and I passed muster. We had a great fine-dining experience. The food was terrific, and the wine list quite extensive.

The staff were very good, it was clear that they enjoy their place of work. As a result they made us feel welcome, and cared for.

The rooms themselves are good, including the beds/mattresses/pillows. Although the decoration of the rooms is not as nice as the main areas they were clean and comfortable.

Will stay here again, if I leave too late on a drive north or if traffic around Polokwane is too bad on the way to Northern Limpopo.

We stayed there over the weekend
and where very pleasantly surprised!

There is plenty to see and do, in fact a weekend is not long enough!

I would recommend the Protea Ranch Hotel and we are already planning our return visit!

Pack your golf clubs, camera, swimming costume, binoculars, walking boots and come hungry!

Hotel is just OK. Rooms are below average. They have a nice restaurant and the best of all was definitely a tour called "Walk with Lions". I did it at 7 am and spent around one hour walking with 4 lions and several guides. This is AWESOME!!!!
Don't spend your time and money going to the Game Ride. You will see the other animals anyway. Walking with lions is an experience you will hardly find anywhere else.

To get from Stellenbosch to the low veld (Kruger Park area) takes much longer that it seems. So a nights stop over (after flying to JHB / Lanseria) is usually required..... This time we decided to travel via Polokwane in order to reach the Karongwe Game Reserve between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit.

The only accommodation which seemed suitable was the Ranch (Protea) Resort. I think the resort has a '4-star' rating. This is not based on the room furnishings, but probably rather on the size of the units. We are a family of five and stayed in the family room (think is was F1). which by any standards is large: 2 bedrooms with one bathroom. The one bedroom had a bunk bed plus two extra single beds (thus sleeping 4) and the other room had a king size bed in.

All the units (rooms) are separate; I mean that they are not off passages leading from the reception, but rather separate units (within walking distance) from reception / dining / pool area.
Each unit has its own parking in front or next to the unit. The estate is safe / secure.

We had dinner in the family restaurant (was on the way to the 'bush' for a week, so no 'fancy' clothes for the more formal dining room). There is buffet + a la cart option available. Kids pay half price and under 6(?) is free. The selection is small for the buffet, but we all enjoyed. The buffet had: chilli chicken pieces, fried hake, mince, spaghetti, mielie pap, green salad, coleslaw, soup (may be 1 or 2 items I can't remember). For dessert: creme caramel, trifle, ice cream. We did not stay for breakfast.

The manager's walked around constantly, checking if everyone has what they need, and even clearing the plates if not done timeously!

We really just stopped over - so we did none of the activites at the Ranch - only utilized the room / dining areas.

It is obvious that an upgrade is (over)due.... but the overall experience was not unpleasant. My feeling was that the management was always visible and the units were clean and food was, for the price of the buffet (R125), really acceptable and I will go back.

Must just mention that we always do grocery shopping on the day we enter the park, I can recommend Mall of the North to any one - it was clean, and everything you need is situated right next to each other (Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Diskem Pharmacy, and Wimpy for breakfast, all situated togther at the same entrance at that Mall). Quick in and out!!

My partner and I visited the Ranch to do a walking with lions experience - it really is quite an experience. We were in a group of six, walking with two 18 month old females, and a 9 month old. During the walk you have the opportunity to walk alongside the lions, and to pose for photos with them lying down. The guides (who are unarmed) took very good photos with our own cameras which was a nice freebie. The experience is a little unsettling but very interesting and fun.

Afterwards we had breakfast in the hotel which was excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff. Overall a great, family-run business.
