We spend only one night in this BB on our way from Johannesburg to Orpen Gate. We felt we should have spent another day there as it is a beautiful BB. It is a classic old farmhouse which is lovingly restored. The bedrooms are very nice; the only thing is that the AC might be a little inadequate if the weather is very hot. Dinner is lovingly served on the terrace and the chef prepares a good meal. Breakfast can also be enjoyed there and it a treat in the cool morning.
If you travel from Johannesburg/Pretoria don't take the road through White River. Drive by Dullstroom and Lydenburg which give a far prettier route.

After staying in three different guesthouses we ended our round trip in the Krueger Park while staying at the guestlodge Abangane in Hazyview the very best place we visited. Abangane means "Friends" and this was absolutely the case. Greeted by Ridwaan after the arrival we were immediately caught by the phenomenal breathtaking view over the bushland near Hazyview. The rooms are beautifully furnished, the garden is perfectly in shape and the hosts Klaus and Ridwaan looked after us with descrecancy and very professionally in details. Dinner at night is a delight with the personal involvement of Klaus and his crew. With ideas where to go and where to eat outside were provided and we never had the feeling of being left alone. The sound of the animals at night, the smell and the heat left us with a beautiful souvenir of this place so specially maintained and looked after. We will certainly come back. Thank you Klaus and Ridwaan you made us dream. Joe and Margrit from Switzerland

A short sand road from the main road leads to the lodge entrance where we were able to see giraffes, buck and zebra on the neighbouring property. On our arrival we were greeted by Ridwaan and the friendly (but not obtrusive) dogs – Zeena (one of the dogs) was often sleeping outside I door which we loved. Both Ridwaan and Klaus made us feel at home. The gardens and swimming pools were well maintained and there are beautiful views of the valley from the pool and at the entrance of our room.

We stayed for three nights and had dinner at the lodge on the first night which was superb. The breakfast was good and adequate consisting of the standard continental/English breakfast options. We found the staff always attentive and keen on feedback on the meal.

Klaus gave us some good options on eating out for the remaining nights and seemed knowledgeable about the area. Our room was very clean and neat. The bed was large and comfortable. Although there were other guests there it was quiet and peaceful and we hardly noticed them. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the lodge and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again.

Room Tip: Try get a room away from the dining area - closer to the parking lot.

Abangane is situated on the Sabie road out of Hazyview. The house is accessed via a rough dirt track, just short of a KM long. The owners keep large dogs (German Shepards) as pets, but they are very placid and friendly dogs, and not to be feared.

The pool has an amazing view over the valley and the gardens are well landscaped.

The rooms are spacious but are lacking some finishing touches, e.g.
- no hand soap in the bathroom.
- the soap holder in the showers keeps tipping over, letting the shower gel/shampoo/etc fall

Breakfast is average, and we got even got scolded for putting the hot teapot on the table without a coaster, when it was the staff that did that.

Overall, this is a nice place to stay, but we stayed in many other places that were twice as nice for half the price.

We were greeted by Klaus on arrival and he showed us where everything is situated in the rooms and the comunal areas.
We did not eat at the guest house and no recommendation regarding restaurants was made nor were we asked what we had planned for dinner.
The rooms are basic and clean.
The wooden door and window frames need a coat of paint and the door to the room was difficult to open and close.
The room was situated close to the parking bay which is lit up all night.
The curtains do not block out the light and if you keep them slightly open for fresh air the room is lit up all night.
The bathroom is on the small side with a shower and two basins. No soaps were provided and I had to go and ask for soap.
There was only 1 little bottle of shower gel provided for 2 of us.
The shower has only a small soap holder attached to the shower wall.
A bar fridge is in the room but this was not switched on.
Kettle/hair dryer/torch/matches/candles are in the rooms.
Bed/mattress very creaky every time you turn around. Not sure if it is the wooden structure the bed is in or the slats.
One of the beds collapsed during the night which was repaired which took a while.
The second room was needed for 3 people. A sleeper couch was in the room. When we arrived in the early evening we were advised where the bedding for such sleeper couch was kept and we had to make it up ourselves. I did expect the establishment to make up this sleeper couch for us at night as I am paying the same price as for those that are sleeping in a bed. I have never had to make up my own bed at any establishment.
When we arrived back from dinner in Hazyview, the power went out for approx 30 minutes.
There is no backup generator. We managed with candles.
The breakfast was disappointing.
No filter coffee. Tea served in a cup with the tea bag soaking in the cup...no tea pot.
No pork sausages. No onions. No fried tomatoes.
Maybe my expectations were just too high.
The establishment did apologize once again as their eggs were all "off" and we did get 2 glasses of wine and a Tab on the house. Thank you.
The view from the veranda is beautiful as well as the pool.
It was an ok experience but I just had different expectations as this establishment calls itself a 4*.....

Thank you very much for your review and we are sad to hear that you did not enjoy the stay with us to the fullest.
We are rather surprised at your review as your husband stayed with us some time ago and that was the reason for you to book with us. He obviously enjoyed his stay. Nothing has changed since.
It is correct that various things went wrong during your stay (the law of three) but all had been resolved immediately (including the missing soap in the room) and were apologized for. In our phone conversation ahead of your booking and with booking confirmation we offered as usual dinner for your day of stay. You did not book dinner as you were very familiar with Hazyview (your own words). It furthermore is correct that in one room one of the side planks of the bed came out of the holder, which was fixed in less than 5 minutes from the time we were informed. The curtains are full block out curtains.
A full breakfast buffet was available and hot English breakfast prepared on request. We are not aware of the fact that you did not get what you wished for. It is true that the local supermarket obviously had a bad batch of eggs, but unfortunately they were still in the shell for us not to see or to smell the condition. The bad eggs never got close to you and we were able to serve you perfect eggs.
We always serve Ciro Café Oro Espresso beans, freshly grounded and brewed in a professional Siemens Coffee machine and yes, our Fife Roses Earl Grey your ordered is served in a teabag.

Without going into more detail, we are not CALLING ourselves 4*, we are re-graded 4 star on a yearly basis since 2006 and with the last assessment even achieved the percentage that would qualify Abangane Guest Lodge as 5 star.
Having met you on arrival we honestly did not expect anything less but accepted that we cannot please everyone. The photos you show are from the morning after your stay, showing a room and bathroom that looks untidy instead of showing your room as you found it on arrival. We feel the posted photos are of a malicious nature!
One of the members of your travel group wrote the following in our guest book “This place is stunning! I loved it here! Thank you!”

This was our third trip to Abangane and I can't wait to go back - it really is a vacation for the soul. On our last visit, we were fortunate enough to have an extended stay and the lazy days at the pool were just as rejuvenating as the incredible trips into the Park and day trips to surrounding places of interest. In fact, we were so 'chilled', that I was apparently calling the the giraffe on the property next door, kangaroos. But that's another story... Klaus, Ridwaan and all the staff, including the 4 friendly furry ones, make for an all round magical stay at a place I would visit again in an instant. Thanks again, Alicia, Cape Town

A luxurius guesthouse with charming hosts (Klaus, Ridwaan and all the friendly resident dogs).
We spent our last night there prior to travelling back home, but would have certainly enjoyed staying there longer.
I loved the decoration of the rooms, the friendly atmosphere and excellent breakfast selection.
If I am in the area I will certainly go back.
