“Great option for golfers”
Reviewed 26 October 2012

We are from AUS and stayed at Sabi River Sun as part of a timeshare Getaway. The actual timeshare chalets are fantastic with everything you need. We were lucky enough to get a chalet near the main hotel/restaurant area and close to a private pool. The golfing was great, but only 9 holes open which we did know when we booked. The reduced golf prices were also a bonus....

As an overseas visitor, the first thing I would say is that you need transport to stay here. We did spend most of our time at the resort, as we didn't have too many other options. We tried to book day trips through the booking office for 3 days, but nobody was available. Another local guest heard our conversations about not being able to book any day trips and kindly offered to give us a lift into town to book through the visitor centre. We had already been to stay at a private game lodge in Sabi Sands, so did not do any Game Drives from the lodge, but after talking to the locals, this is the place to be to do salf game drives!!!

Having said that, we really enjoyed our timeshare at Sabi River Sun and met lots of interesting people. Overall the quality, service and price of food, drinks, etc. was very reasonable and we did not have any bad experiences with the restaurant, as others have posted.

We would definately go back to Sabi River Sun resort, although next time would probably hire a car.

Hi stayed at Sabi over the weekend of the 19 October. The setting is beautifull especially with the rainy weather and everything so green. The hotel room was very basic and small considering we were 2 adults and 2 kids. The bathroom was just big enough for 1 person at a time. The bed stands were dusty seems they dont clean there but overall ok. The food in the restaurant is really not good and would not advise anyone to eat there unless you are forced like we were.

Room Tip: Maybe try the chalets if you are more than 2

We visited Sabi River Sun for a midweek break in September. The staff at check-in were not as friendly as they could have been although they were efficient. We were allocated a nice chalet next to the golf course by the river. The chalet was spotlessly clean and had a nice upmarket feel to it.

The resort is in a perfect place to use as a base for exploring Mpumalanga and is quite centrally located amongst all the various tourist attractions that one may want to visit including the various waterfalls, pot holes, Gods Window, Kruger Park etc.

My favourite aspect of the resort was the superbly manicured golf course. At the time of our stay the back nine was undergoing refurbishment so it was played as a nine hole course with different tee boxes to make it an 18 hole course. It is a relatively short course, but most enjoyable nonetheless.

A great way to spend some time in the evening is to venture down to the hippo hide where the hippos spend their time entertaining onlookers amongst the crocodiles and abundant birdlife giving photographers a great opportunity to snap some great shots as they yawn and splash around in the river.

You will also find bowls, tennis, swimming pools, a spa and a playground for the kids at the resort and the restaurant makes fantastic food including pizza that they will deliver to your chalet should you wish.

Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable experience

Comment on restaurant only : If you are staying at the hotel, you are advised to eat out at one of the many surrounding restaurants.
The hotel restaurant called Sesonke offers very poor food, poor and slow service from waiting staff who obviously could care less.

We stayed in the hotel section for two nights and were pleased with our stay although I think that we may have been lucky in that our room seemed to be of a higher standard and more convenient than others that we saw. We had a good sized room with comfortable beds and a plasma TV. Both our breakfast and the pizzas were quite good and overall service was also of a high standard.

One exceptional feature which greatly added to our pleasure were the very large and well maintained grounds including a large hippo pond with over half a dozen resident hippos which can be easily seen and photographed from the specially constructed viewing pavilion.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 200 which seemed better than the average.

After a couple dissapointing visits to Sabi Sun, it is unfortunate that I will no longer choose this "resort". It is upsetting knowing that rats and bats live in the roof of the bungalow, while a second level is situated under the roof which contains "holes"; leaving rat poop on the beds. The bungalows are INFESTED with fish moths. Not only in the clothing cupboards, but in the roofs too. It is not pleasent to have fishmoths on clothes and linen. It is terrible that my children are unable to sleep in their beds because they are frightened and disgusted by the mess. This has occured in all three bedrooms. After 15 consecutive years of visits to Sabi Sun, it is dissapointing to conclude that due to the bad standards my family will not be visiting again.

We have now been to Sabi River Sun for five years in a row and it continues to be amazing. We stayed in the time share chalets (on the 18 th fairway) and this model just works if you have young kids. The estate is secure and the kids bring their bicycles and they explore the golf estate non-stop. The kids entertainment programme also keeps them well occupied.
The appeal of this destination is the great weather in August and activities we enjoy such as : sundowners at the hippo pool, braais on balmy nights, cheerful golf course, easy access to the Kruger, beer, wine and lunch around the pool on a hot day, many other families with kids of similar ages.
The chalets are comfortable and I understand will be undergoing a refurb over the next two to three years.
Plenty to do in the area as well such as Skyway Trails, River Rafting, Quad biking, Mountain biking and more
