We holidayed for 2 weeks in South Africa. Of this 1 week was at Mpumalanga. Our tours were booked from India through TravCare. TravCare had outsourced our Mpumalanga tour to elephant Herd. We were picked up at Nelspruit airport by Bradley who drove us to Sudwala lodge (own booking).

Day 2 to Day 6 were well planned by Elephant Herd.

On day 2 we did the Kruger Full Day Animal drive. Our guide in Kruger was Martin. He was either very good or very lucky. We got to see the following by the road: mating lions with a contender across the road, two herds of elephants, a rhino, two herds of hippos, a family of hyenas, a giraffe, a herd of kudu, a leopard kill with a vulture and bateleur eagle feasting on it (we could hear the leopard but could not see it), a herd of cape buffalo, herds of deer, impala, bushbuck, and eland - all in the morning drive. In the mid-morning we got to see more elephants, hippos, giraffe, kudu, cape buffalo, and herds of impala from a distance. We also spotted a number of birds of different kinds including vultures, lilac breasted roller, fish eagle, kingfisher, cormorant, hawk eagle, etc. The afternoon was relatively unproductive with a few kudu, hippo, impala and an occasional bird. Martin kept us enthralled with stories and snippets of information.

Day 3 was a relaxed visit to the Chimp Eden which took up only half a day. Day 4 was a relaxed half day at the Elephant Sanctuary). Day 4 was a packed half day at Sudwala Caves, and Donosaur Park, followed by the Botanical Gardens.

Day 5 was the full day Panorama Route.

Day 6 was, unfortunately a free day with absolutely nothing to do. It would have been better if another full day tour had been included earlier and a half day tour shifted to Day 6.

Bradley accompanied us throughout and was most friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating.

We later found that we could have arranged the same tour after we landed but more cost effectively.

“Knowledgable tour guides for Kruger”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

Booked a full day tour with this company via the Potea hotel. The tour guide 42 years in Kruger park was extremmely knowledgable and it was a change to be given information not only about the animals but also the birds, spiders, snails and vegetation. As an experienced guide he did not rush to the sightings of the big 5 as heard over the radio so we avoided the scrums that arise particularly at the lion and leopard sightings. Sadly because of the weather overcast with a strong wind blowing, the animals were in hiding, but because of the knowledge of the guide this did not detract from a very enjoyable day.
We were disappointed that we could not get a refund for my husband who was taken sick on the morning of the drive and consequently could not risk coming on the tour. I understand that they have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but that does not allow for sudden illness. As the tour was less than half full the fact that my husband was unable to come did not prevent anyone else from the tour.

“Wonderful Experience in the Kruger Park and surroundings!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2014

I stayed in Hazyview for a couple of days in February 2014 and obviously wanted to visit the Kruger National Park. I did several tours with Elephant Herd Tours and all of them were exceptional! My guide lived for over a decade in the Kruger National Park itself and had all the insights in wildlife and nature. I saw Lions and their cubs, elephants, rhinos, hippos, wild dogs etc. - stunning!

The tour guides were always on time, had free water for us during the tour and drove very safely. I felt very welcomed.

I also took the Panorama Tour and saw the Blyde River Canyon with them and it seems they always take that extra step to please you. As weather (clouds) came in, we did a de-tour to catch the views from Blyde River Canyon first instead of following the normal quicker route for the tour. Thank you guys for the wonderful experiences!! Highly recommended tour operator!

Our first impression of our Elephant Herd Safari Tour in Sabi Sands was not pleasant. We truly felt herded!! We were staying at the Protea Kruger Gate Hotel which meant we were going to be picked up at 4:45 am to be driven to Sabi Sands (which we actually thought was a lot closer). Although we were exactly on time, the ranger (Wayne? free-lancer) half-welcomed us, didn't let us even grab a cup of coffee saying we were late and without a single word drove us for 45 minutes at an unpleasantly fast speed to our meeting point in Sabi Sands. We had no idea where we were going, how long it was going to take to get there or even if we were actually already on the game drive itself. It was cold and bumpy.
Once we got there, he did change his attitude, he proved to be very knowledgeable, explained what we were going to do and treated us more kindly. Although this was nobody's fault we saw only two of the Big Five (leopard and elephant) and waking up so early (and paying almost double the premium of a Kruger game drive) didn't pay off.
The day before we had visited Kruger and had a lot more luck seeing a larger diversity of animals. Furthermore, the battery in our truck died and we had to be pushed to restart. My advice: Elephant Herd may be a great choice if you're staying at Sabi Sands, but from the Protea Kruger Gate it felt rushed and not worth it.

“Great night tour with baby elephants”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2013

Had a fantastic tour with Martin, picked up from accom and taken to Sabi Sands for a night tour. Had a baby elephant come right up to the vehicle, mum was fine... what an experience! Meal was great, service excellent, our family left feeling that money well spent.
