In late Nov 2008, my wife and I stayed at the Windmill Wine Shop & Cottages for two nights while exploring the Blyde River Canyon area (eventually on way to Kruger). We rented a car at the Mpumalanga airport for our tour and easily found our way to the shop/cottages in under 1.5 hours. The Windmill Wine Shop & Cottages are easily located on the R536 between Hazyview and Sabie (~10 min west of Hazyview).... a great homebase for the Blyde River Canyon region.
Upon arrival, Thomas & Jacqui (owners) warmly introduced us to the shop and property over a nice glass of wine. The shop, which includes a restaurant with seating, has a great selection of various wines, beers (a nice draft microbrew selection), cheeses and various snacks. The cottages are located adjacent to the shop in a secured (fence & guard) area with parking available.
Arriving late in the day and near closing time for the shop/restaurant (5pm), we opted for a fantasticly presented cheese and meat tray with a chilled Chardonnay which was delivered to our cottage while we unpacked and settled in.
The cottage (unit #4) was perfect for us! Spending our previous week in a larger lodge with various travelers, we needed some peace & quiet to rebalance ourselves. This was definately the place! The cottages are newly built and modernly decorated with all the required amenities (full kitchen, living room, bathroom and comfortable bedroom). Along the back of the cottage is a large porch overlooking the river valley below. Although the mosquitos were a bit pesky at dusk, we enjoyed the peace and serenity it offered. Dinner was enjoyed in silence just viewing the valley and hearing the various song birds traveling between trees.
As the Wine Shop closes at 5pm, later dinner options require traveling by car to the surrounding areas (i.e. Sabie, Graskop, Hazyview) which have plenty of selections. Thomas & Jacqui offer various suggestions to suite your mood.
As for the hosts, I can't say enough about their warmth and help during our trip. They assisted us with plans/touring in the area and following travels to Kruger. They even made sure we had a breakfast-to-go the first morning we went touring in the Blyde River Canyon.....which we enjoyed while viewing a waterfall (a very nice breakfast tray with cheese, marmalades, breads and juices). Throughout our stay, they continually made sure we were finding what we needed.
I highly recommend it for those interested in a well placed, clean and modern, safe, self-catering home away from home. If you are a wine & cheese fanatic such as myself, this is a MUST STAY. Their morning "fully prepared' breakfast at the shop is also a treat to enjoy. Easily my best breakfast in South Africa during my 3 week holiday!
