I stayed at the Elephant Lake Hotel in October 2012 with my wife while on a tour of S. Africa; St. Lucia was one of the stopover points. St. Lucia itself is a bit of a touristy location, but not at all bad, with plenty of places to eat, shop, and things to do and see. Elephant Lake Hotel is a nice hotel, if dated, to stay at for a night or two.

Pros:
- Clean - no bugs, no stains, just clean beds, clean bathrooms, clean floors, you name it.
- Perhaps a con, depending on how you look at it, there will be hippos visiting at night - don't wander around outside in the garden.
- Buffet breakfast was great, lots of protein, grains, juices - maybe not the most sophisticated, but lots of good food to fill you up.
- Cold, effective air conditioning - if you need cold, dehumidified air, this hotel has it.
- Contrary to another reviewer's complaint, I had no problems at all with the outlets, they worked with standard converters perfectly.
- Location is good, close but not right on the main street, easy to walk anywhere.

Cons:
- Decor, furniture, architecture is a bit dated and worn
- Perhaps a pro, there are resident troops of vervet monkeys that will mess with anything you've left out on your balcony, and if you leave your balcony door open, they will go in your room - our tripmates experienced this firsthand!
- From the entrance to our room, it was a long walk down numerous hallways; there's only one real entrance so if your room is toward the back, it's a slog.
- The TV is an old tube - which some people might take as a problem, although I didn't come here to watch TV so it wasn't a big deal to me.

Overall, my experience at Elephant Lake Hotel was good, there wasn't too much to complain about. There aren't too many other hotels in the area, but in general it has prety much al you need at a good price and I'd recommend it to friends as well as consider it if I return to the area.

Thanks for reading my review - if you have any questions, please let me know!

I really like this older hotel. The staff is great, food is very good and the service is perfect. The hotel has CHARM! and you can eat outside. It is easy walking distance to the other shops, stores, and restaurants.

Room Tip: It is not a carbon copy of any other hotel. It is what you think of as a hotel in Africa.

Hotel is used by a lot of groups and can be very busy. Atmosphere then is more like a busy train station. Room is spacious, clean, some chipped tiles in the bathroom. Rooms either have terrace or balcony. WIFI was down due to rain and thunder, but neighbourhood had strong, working signal. Hotel is situated on Main Road, next to St. Lucia Lake. Central to walk to restaurants and shops.

The hotel was recommended to us by the travel agency that assured us it is a 4* facility.
This facility is not a hotel, it is rather a shelter with no internet working there and no one willing to get the password from perfectly working one from the neighbors!
The room was dirty, very basic, with many dirty stains on the walls and on the ceiling.
There is no elevator and the porter service non-existing. I left my bag at the reception and came back after some 20 minutes. Thanks God the bag was not stolen, but the receptionist, of course with silly big smile, informed me they had forgotten whose bag it was....
Stay away from that place!
The only advantage- hippos visiting the garden in the evening or early morning.

The hotel is nothing special from the outside, but well situated just off the main street. The foyer is quite spacious albeit a bit cluttered with many brochures and a tour booking desk. We were met at the door with a smiling welcome and an offer of assistance to carry our bags to our room. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a great buffet the first evening with lamb on the spit. Good food and good service. Our room overlooked the pool and the bar terrace, with a view across the garden to the riverbank. Room was very nice, although it needed a bit of maintenance. Good bed. Aircon was a boon, it was very humid. Hippos came up to feed after dark, but there were too many eager photographers wanting to get close, and basically chased them back to the water. Night drive was good - very lucky to see a leopard and hyaena apart from various antelope, bush pig and bushbabies. Also enjoyed the cruise, with many hippo, a croc, ibis, and the magnificent African fish eagle.

Room Tip: Ground floor 1 - 12 and first floor 27 - 38 face pool
