“What a holiday!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2013

I would just like to thank the owner of Sunset Lodge for being so hospitable. I know we can be pains at times, wanting more towels, our noisy kids and all the questions we had about the area. We have already booked for next year, as we felt that as a family this was the perfect place to be. The weather was great and Cape Vidal just 45 minutes away made it even better, as we got to experience the wild life as well as the ocean.

I would highly recommend this destination and the homely accommodation

Room Tip: The front chalet looks the best .....

We liked the quiet area in the end of St Lucia. The price of 560 Rand was good and the place comfortable and cute. Only minus is that is smelled a little moldy and the floor in both bathroom and toilet was broken

We stayed for three nights as we had booked this accommodation whilst still at home. The cabins were advertised as 'luxury chalets' but were extremely basic and very small. We have a family of four and were extremely cramped. The cabin would have been suitable for us for one night.
On arrival, we met the fill in caretaker Penny. Penny and her family took the only large cabin with views of the estuary for the first night. That cabin was then vacated for the next two nights where not only us, but other guests were housed in the cabins with far less viewing options. In the accommodation industry where there is so much competition, The lack of an apparent manager gave us a poor experience of what Sunset Lodge has to offer. We had to put up with a barking dog (owned by Shelly) and the monkeys crawling all over our balcony, with no Manager to be seen for two out of the three days.

Room Tip: Only book if you can get the front cabin which is the largest and has views.

Spent a wonderful few days in St Lucia and everything was orgainsed for us by Shelley. A trip through the iSimangaliso Wetlands, a Boat cruise on the Estuary, a safari with a wonderful guide through the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Reserves. We saw so many wild animals and birds - many close enough to pat. Even saw several endangered species. The hippos and mongeese and monkeys wandered through the property and around our cabin and there was even a leopard nearby.
Our accommodation was great and we were so well looked after. Hope to visit again. This ranked right up there with the best of Africa.

Room Tip: All chalets have vernadahs and great for breakfast dining but in the evening we all congegated near...

After a long day of driving from Swaziland to St Lucia we arrived around 15.30. We drove through the main street, McKenzie Street, to sort out a place to stay. Sunset lodge seemed the best place to stay, even though it looked like it was a bit far from the main street. Fortunately they had a chalet for us. It is stunning. It is a logcabin chalet, two bedrooms, one double amd one twin. A fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom (shower in bath) and a livingroom with a comfy sofa, chairs and a tv.
The cottage has a beautiful veranda, looking out over the water. There is a swimmingpool too.
Apparently at night the hippo's visit the garden, although we haven't seen them.
It is not so far to get to the main street as we thought. Barely a 10 minute walk, but be aware of the hippo's at night. Again we did not see them, but they seem to walk through the streets at night. There are a lot of nice places to eat in town and there is a lot to do in and around St Lucia. Shelly, the lady in Sunset Lodge, tells you all about it when you check in and she can book all the tours you would like to go on.
It is not the cheapest option in town. We paid R750 per night, the most expensive stay during our holiday so far, but very much worth it!
If you want to book a boat-tour or a gamedrive trip to the nearby Imfolezi-Hluwluwepark, try Heritage tours, booking office close to the Reef and Dune restaurant. They have very good guides.

We stayed in Sunset Lodge in 2009. We stayed in a chalet, the chalets are built quite close to each other but since it was off-peak season, we had no problems with noise from the neighbouring chalets. There is a pool but we didn't use it. Location-wise, it is satisfactory and in fact, is surrounded by lots of hotels and lodges. There is a nice view of the estuary from the poolside. The owners have tried to create an Africa theme, putting up a Zulu shield on the entrance door of the chalet and African prints on the sofa and bedsheets, nice touches. There is a small kitchen. Overall, cleanliness of the chalet is average. Price-wise, this lodge is fine and they welcome children. The kids enjoyed playign with the owner's friendly dogs.

There are many B&Bs and self-catering options in St Lucia, I would probably try out these other options the next time I go to St Lucia.

St Lucia is an interesting place, the river cruise is great for hippo viewing. An evening stroll by the estuary is great for spotting hippo spurs. There is a nice seafood restaurant called The Ocean Sizzler Restaurant in town.

Room Tip: Try and get a chalet near the poolside, as it will offer a good view of the estuary.

Was disappointed when we first arrived as we were expecting better. Its was Ok for a couple of nights. We thought we would have better views. there was a/c which was very welcome. Staff were very noisy outside the room early in the morning. Swimming pool looked ok but we did not use it.
Did not see anything much better in St Lucia but ccording to other reviews there must be plenty better than this. Shelley, the owner, is pleasant enough but scatty/disorganised. This cost me money unnecessarily on booking from England. Sorry Shelley but I would not return.
St Lucia is a bit of a dump. The wetland park is good and the boat trip on the river was a bit pricey but well worth it (go late evening when cooler).

Room Tip: There is only one lodge with good views and that iis the one facing the estuary. The rest are not gr...
