Go for the boat trips that are offered by the owner. He will tell you everything about the area and more about the animals, he has a great sense of humour too. We stayed in his lodge on Hornbill Road in St. Lucia and felt very comfortable. We can just recommend it.

I had an outstanding boat trip with Johan. He gave a very good overview of the Estuary and Isimilingo Wetlands Park and then gave us an excellent trip on the estuary. We moored close to a pod of hippos and while we had coffee and rusks we watched their interaction with each other. The boat takes a maximum of 15 which results in a far more personal service than the large boats with over 100 passengers using a public address system. I have done several trips to see hippos and this must rate as one of the best.

I am a US biology professor who leads undergraduate study abroad trips to South Africa. I've been doing night drives, game drives, beach visits, estuary cruises etc for 10 years. The experience with Shakabarker was the best ever. No other provider I've used is even close.

We did the 2-3 hr. estuary tour on our first afternoon, then the 2-3 hr. night drive in the evening. Off-roading in the iSimangaliso wetlands chasing rhino, buffalo and leopard was the highlight of our entire 3-week trip to South Africa-at least for me anyway.

Next day we drove up the coast to the picnic site on the ocean for a braai, a swim and some interactions with vervet, samango and bushbuck. This was an all-day excursion.

All was very well-organized and went off like clockwork with a very high level of hospitality and professionalism.

As biologists ourselves we really appreciated Kian's knowledge of the animals and the ecosystems that they inhabit. We also appreciated his sharp eyes. How did he ever see those chameleons?

If you go you will want good quality camera stuff including a flash for night shots. Hot drinks are provided but it will get cold out there at night (in August) so bring a warm jacket and hat and wear long pants. On the other hand the estuary is bright and sunny-you'll need a sun hat and other sun protection. Don't forget a bathing suit and related stuff for the beach picnic. Shakabarker provided everything else.

Had an amazing night drive with Kian - we followed a female leopard's tracks for a while which was dead exciting. We then saw a male leopard as well as countless animals wandering about (the highlight was a 3 week old rhino calf).

His insight and knowledge in the flora and flora of the area was second to non and his knowledge was just amazing.

The hot choc and biscuit stop was fun and the highlight for my 8 year old was seeing and holding a dwarf chameleon.

The best of the best guides in St Lucia.

We really enjoyed our hippo & croc boat tour - we didn't see any wildlife we hadn't seen before, but the guides were very knowledgeable and this tour deepened our understanding of the estuary and the animals and birds that live there. They pick you up at your lodgings and provide a snack of fruit and hot chocolate/coffee/tea on the boat. The boat is small enough to be close to the wildlife. Highly recommend.
