We took a late afternoon lake cruise and had the opportunity to see lots of hippo up close which was wonderful. The captain of the boat was knowledgeable and able to spot the wildlife and tell us lots of interesting information. I had not realised that hippos don't actually swim or how nocturnal they are. It became a bit of a challenge to capture a hippo open-mouthed yawn shot and we managed to nail it in the last few minutes. I was surprised to hear that hippos kill more humans than any other animal in South Africa - always good to add to the random facts in my full brain! We also saw crocodiles and many birds including a rather splendid Goliath Heron and some beautiful Kingfishers. As the boat returned to dock the sun was setting and the views of the lake and estuary were awesome.
