Our weekend stay was lovely. Our room was neat and clean. The reception, actually, everything is outdoors which has a charm and ambience of a resort, which we loved. Just a few pointers, they have 1 big geyser. We had a cold shower on our first morning and only had a hot shower after 9am the next day. The room is very noisy, walls are thini, kids running on the boardwalks and water in bathrooms is clearly heard. This is especially distracting at 6am, so we did not get to sleep in as we wanted. They have the deck perfectly situated, so you can have drinks at the bar overlooking the Kruger National Park. The food was fabulous and varietal from game to seafood to roasts. Everyone was friendly, staff and guests alike. The spa was divine, good location overlooking the park and the therapists were friendly with magic hands.

Room Tip: Our room was neat in the hotel. There are chalets but we didnt get a chance to check them out.

Dear nev n

Thank you for posting such your review and sharing it on TripAdvisor.

There is something about the bushveld that creates a sense of calm, which is perfect for a holiday. We did our best to blend in with the environment when building the hotel and your comments reflect that.

I am truly sorry that you found the room to be noisy and that this affected your sleep. The comfort of our GUESTS throughout the property is important and I will be looking into this.

However, it seems that the rest of your trip was incredible and that our open air restaurant provided delicious food and great variety. Your comment about the viewing decks is spot on and what better way to end of the day with a drink overlooking the Kruger National Par.

The STAFF is at the heart of everything and their passion for GUEST service never seizes to amaze me. I will congratulate them on continuing to go the extra mile for our GUESTS.

Until your next trip to the bushveld, we wish you safe travels.

Kind Regards

We recently stayed at this wonderful hotel and enjoyed great service from ALL the staff. Calvin who served us breakfast remembered our order from the day before, it was so special to get our café latte's without even asking! A kind, caring and helpful fellow.

We had special requests and Herbert the manager went out of his way to ensure that all was taken care of. He is a tremendous asset to the hotel.

The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the wooden decking that leads from the main entrance to the rooms should have a carpet strip down the middle to dull the noise of footsteps as when people walk to the rooms, one can hear the footsteps on the wood as it resonates.

Rooms were of a good quality and the shower was huge and superb, although the bathroom door got in the way and could open differently.

Lighting was good, however they have installed LED reading lamps on the wall on each side of the bed which are problematic and don't always work, even though they are new.

The boma (the outdoor dinner area) had a very good atmosphere and the food was always of a high quality with good variety and attentive staff. The only area of improvement in the food is the pasta dishes which seemed to always be stodgy and floury and the ice cream was of a poor quality.

The lodge is 50 metres from Kruger gate (the entrance to the reserve), which was most convenient.

All in all, it was a most pleasant stay, with happy, motivated, helpful and friendly staff who go out of their way to anticipate your needs.

Dear Moongis

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review and posting it on TripAdvisor.

At Protea Hotel Kruger Gate we aim to not only meet, but exceed GUEST expectations. After hearing of your pleasant encounters with Calvin and Herbert, I am confident that the TEAM is on their way to achieving our aim. I will congratulate them all and I am sure that they will be motivated to continue on their search for excellence.

I really appreciate your feedback regarding the wooden walkways, LED lights and pasta dishes on the buffet. These valuable comments will be discussed with the TEAM and enable us to improve and prevent this from reoccurring.

I am however very happy that you enjoyed the Boma atmosphere and the rest of the high quality food on offer. Not to mention our close location to the Paul Kruger Gate, which was convenient.

We hope to host you again soon.

Kind Regards

We stayed 2 nights with 2 young kids. Arrival was not good. We were tired, cold, kids were cranky and we needed food and a bit of down time after a long drive. Unfortunately we arrived early and at a time where most guests were on game drives and the perfect oppertunity for the hotel to do maintenance.

Enter screeching drills and banging hammers and in the eating area where we so badly wanted to be. Needless to say we contemplated leaving and what followed, I can only say, is the best defusing of a bad situation I have ever experience from a hotel manager. I am sorry that his name now escapes me, but he turned what we thought was going to be a nightmare morning, into a wonderful, heartwarming experience. Seeing our upset, he straight away brought us away from the construction area, sat us all in lovely comfy couch's, draped us with blankets(it was a very cold morning), begged us to stay and let him make up for our initial very bad impression. Provided us with a drinks and fed us with whatever we wanted on the menu. Enter relaxation, warmth and the most genuine personal attention from a fantastic manager and his staff(not to mention an upgrade on our room!)

From there on we had the most wonderful stay in the most perfectly located hotel. The Boma in the evening was by far my favourite memory. The choice and quality of the food was fantastic and what could be better than wonderful food, under the stars whilst listening to the hippos in the back round. And if I haven't said it before, the staff were fantastic! A true testament to good management. There was plenty to keep the kids amused. It was too cold to swim but they had great fun on the crazy golf and the monkeys and other small critters/birds on the grounds caused for much excitement.

Would love to think I'll return some day. Thank you!!

Dear roisin_corr

Your review was a pleasure to read and thank you for sharing it with the TripAdvisor community.

I feel very proud and lucky to work with amazing STAFF who truly love to provide the best GUEST service and ensure that the environment is welcoming. Although your first impression was unpleasant, I am thrilled that the proactive and caring TEAM went out of their way to pave the way for a memorable stay.

Being located in the heart of the bushveld, the peace and tranquility of dining under the stars with a wide selection of authentic African dishes is the norm; and the sound of the animals nearby completes the picture.

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate offers activities for the entire family and I am pleased that your kids had great time.

The TEAM looks forward to welcoming you back.

We stayed in this hotel as part of a group tour of Kruger National Park and South Africa. We didn't have any choice in what hotel we stayed in, but we were pleasantly surprised with how great this hotel was!! The rooms were very clean and up to date, and had a nice sitting area which was great to relax after a long day of touring and safari. The outdoor sitting area had a great ambiance to hang out and use the internet. Also seeing all the birds, monkeys, and baboons just outside of our rooms in the mornings was really fun! We went down to the spa area just before sunrise to look over the river and watch for hippos which was so beautiful!! The only downsides were that the walkways are noisy when suitcases are taken down them, and the dinners were just ok... I wasn't a huge fan of any of the food there, so my opinion may not be the best to go by on food.

Dear aschweppe

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us and the TripAdvisor community.

We have recently completed a refurbishment and your ‘pleasantly surprised’ reaction assures me that Protea Hotel Kruger Gate is definitely the place to stay when visiting the Kruger National Park. A long day of safari is tiring and offering an area to relax and unwind from the all the activity is important.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy the food and the TEAM will certainly use your feedback to ensure that we are always striving for excellence.

Our setting really embraces the natural surroundings and having the animals nearby and even watching them whilst at the spa is breathtaking.

We hope that you choose to visit us again soon!

Haven't visited this hotel for a couple of years but was very pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel still has a great deal to offer and has been spruced up to keep a fresh face on the product. I stayed in a downstairs room that was very noisy due to the folks upstairs doing all sorts of odd things at odd times. Certainly not the hotel's fault however.
The service generally was really good and staff very friendly. The only exception was a barman who took almost 20 minutes to serve 3 cups of coffee!! The poor man was unable to distract himself from patrons who stood in front of him and continually distracted him from our order. Then he delivered the coffee sans milk, spoons or sugar and just left!! This was the only tiny blip on the stay. Meals were great and dinners especially were really great with an extensive buffet in the boma. Two suggestions, perhaps move away from so much canned fruit at breakfast and try and become a little more imaginative with the use of vegetables at dinner. All in all a great 2 day stay in a great hotel with good staff and a wonderful location.

Room Tip: Best to request an upstairs room, especially if you are visiting over a weekend or holiday long week...

Dear Garth J

It is great to hear such wonderful feedback based on your return to Protea Hotel Kruger Gate. We have just completed a refurbishment and are continuously involved in training with STAFF.

I apologise about your experience in the bar and this is certainly not the standard we are usually proud to offer. Your feedback will assist us in ensuring that this does not occur again.

There is no doubt that the chef & TEAM do their best to source fresh produce in order to offer a great variety of delicious meals. The TEAM will be thrilled when I pass on your comments to them and I will make sure they look into your suggestions.

Thank you for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back.

The hotel is very inviting... everyone seemed to be smiling from the time we got to the gate to the time we left three days later. The lobby is an open area with an extremely high ceiling giving us the feel that we were actually outdoors. The way to the rooms is through open walkways that make you feel like you are in the wild... with all the surrounding canopy of trees. The rooms are spacious... the bathrooms could use a little more room, but are not so small as to be uncomfortable. We were in a remodeled room. Very comfortable beds. Flat screen tv. Opened to a garden. The meals were included. And, after three days in Gomo Gomo... (where the food was pretty bad) we were in heaven! The choices were wonderful, the food was very fresh and varied. The dinners are served in a boma type area... basically a sand pit with tables and chairs with a fire in the middle... but, it was nicely done. With additional heat lamps to make sure the guests were comfortable. The breakfast is served in one of the restaurants. We ate outside... the only complaint was the "bouncing" of the deck when anyone passed by. There is some renovation going on... maybe it'll be fixed. The breakfasts were excellent. There is a computer for guest use... free of charge with a fairly fast connection. The hotel is walking distance to the Kruger Gate, right on the Sabi River. The hotel has observation decks where you can just admire the beautiful scenery. Please note than on our last day the observation decks were closed for remodeling. You may want to check the status of construction if this is important to you. There is a small spa by the observation decks. There are tours available from the hotel ~ We brought our own car. Parking was free. I would advise to bring insect repellant. The hotel did not offer it in the room. Being so close to the river and the park... there are insects. All in all. Great stay! Highly recommended!!!

Room Tip: Try to get an upper floor room.

What a fantastic review, filled with great feedback. Thank you for sharing your experience with the TripAdvisor community.

The STAFF at Protea Hotel Kruger Gate are extremely passionate about providing the best GUEST service and creating an environment that is welcoming for our GUESTS. Based on your comments, it is wonderful to know that their approach is noticed by GUESTS.

Being located in the bushveld and a stone’s throw away from the Paul Kruger Gate, it was important that the hotel blended in with its surroundings. The high ceilings, walkways, outdoor dining area and spectacular viewing decks all contribute to this and it is evident in your review.

I will certainly pass on your comments to the TEAM and until next time, we wish you safe travels.

We stayed in a remodeled room. It was clean, spacious, with comfortable bedding and just a few minutes walk or drive from the Paul Kruger Gate entrance of the Game Reserve. Located near the river, you could see some gme there at times. This property was well kept and consisted of walkways leading to the rooms and the common areas. There was only one computer but wifi service was available in the common areas. Breakfasts were good but served in a too small a room. Dinner buffets were quite good, served outdoors, amidst torches.

I love reading our GUEST reviews as they reflect the experience we are providing, which is so important to us. Thank you for your feedback on TripAdvisor, which will assist us in our on-going search for excellence.

Protea Hotel Kruger Gate is near the end of the complete renovation of our rooms and it is positive to hear of your reaction to the refurb. Spacious, comfortable and clean are definitely aspects that we are proud to offer.

I will pass on your positive comments to the TEAM regarding your experience at breakfast and dinner. The breakfast room can get busy at times and we are always looking for ways to reduce this. However the ambience at dinner time, eating outdoors with torches and under the stars is something not to be missed.

Thank you for staying with Protea Hotels during your trip to South Africa and we look forward to welcoming you back.
