“Okay for a 3 star not 4”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

As a black south African, we usually are very patient in nature, not full of complaints, but hai khona! I visited the place on the 27th- 29th December 2013, generally I would say the hotel is fine, but would give it 3 star not 4. The food on the 27 was ...okay...then on the 28th and 29 you probably know it. The grape juice was horribly diluted, the custard was re-cooked obviously to try and make it fresh, watery and tasteless, the ecclairs were so old even a street kid/beggar would refuse to eat it. I think you guys bribe the star grading assessors, your establishment should be a 3 star

Dear "Rehoboth657",

Thank you for your honest feedback! Our apologies for not being able to live up to your expectations when staying with us and the end of 2013.

I can assure you that our hotel is graded as a 4 star hotel for many years already and that this is done in an unbiased and transparent way. Your food experience is certainly not reflective of the high standard we offer to our guests on a day to day basis, hence I will discuss your comments with our kitchen TEAM in detail. Again, our apologies for dropping the ball on some of the food items served on the buffet during your 2nd and 3rd day of stay.

Your sincerely,

We visit this hotel at least twice a year and with out fault great staff, great service. Great entertainment for the children, they have games room, water slides and sometimes a movie of their choice in the rooms. The A la Carte Menu is a great alternative to the buffet.

A good choice of hotel to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
A good central point to see and explore the area, a great place to come back to and relax and enjoy good food and a swim.
Sundowners overlooking the pool is fantastic with the lights lighting up the pool and grass area.
The rooms clean and big.

Room Tip: The family rooms are spacious.

This hotel is 25 minutes from Numbi Gate and 45 minutes from Phabeni gate . It is a great option for those not wanting to spend big money staying in Sabie Sands . We were greeted with a warm welcome by Gladys who checked us in with a smile and a welcome drink . Rooms are large and bright and wifi is available for free in the bar and reception areas . Zanele was also very helpful and friendly with queries at reception . The hotel has a large lounge area with a great open fire place that you can read and relax in and huge beautiful gardens that you can walk in and do some bird watching . We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel and the food was of a high standard and quality over our 3 night stay . The only negative was the chef Precious who was unsmiling and unfriendly in stark contrast to the rest of the hotel staff . Overall though a great stay and very good value for money option outside of the Kruger park .

I was with a small group on our way out of Kruger when we used this hotel as a stop-over. I had stayed here in 2011 with a traveling companion, and my opinion of this hotel did not change. I thought it was sub-standard then, and now, I will say that it is just OK, nothing more. The staff tends to be stand-offish, especially at dinner and at the bar. And they stare - the one thing that makes me very uncomfortable. Normally, I travel alone, and when faced with two or three staff members staring at me in a public dining room, my answer is to leave the room quickly.

The food was passable. There are South African foods that I adore and want more of whenever I visit the country, but not when they're cold. It would also help to have someone nearby to answer questions from tourists who may not have seen South African food before. I ended up answering questions, and I'm hardly the expert.

The rooms are done in early South African 60's. If anyone wants a room done in Chartreuse and Bright Orange, come here. I read a review that said they kept their flipflops on in the shower and yes, I understand that. The tile isn't dirty, it is old.

If you are looking for someplace within an hours drive of Kruger, and only intend on staying one night, this would be the place. Beware of weekends, when families with children arrive, as the hotel staff doesn't do a thing to control the children, and the noise can be deafening. I like kids, but not screaming when I'm trying to relax or work.

Dear "LoverOfSeattle",

Thank you for the honest review. Clearly, the TEAM and I are very disappointed to hear we have not been able to exceed your expectations during your visit to the Kruger Park area. You can imagine its not our aim to simply be an "Ok" option when traveling to the White River area. Especially considering the rich history of the hotel.

We will discuss your comments on the level of service received in the restaurant and the body language of our TEAM members. We will certainly incorporate this into our guest service training programs.

Our hotel is indeed very popular with families with children over the school holidays. Our apologies for the inconvenience this has caused to you when staying over. Clearly not the intention of us as well as the children visiting, but sometimes difficult to avoid due to the playful nature of some of our younger visitors.

We do hope you will allow us the opportunity to host you again when back in our beautiful country.

Yours sincerely,

Charmaine Kotze - General Manager

Let me start by saying that "near" is one hour away from the park on a very good highway. Very comfortable to relax after you spend all day al the park plus the drive time there and back of two hours. Rooms have all amenities in must hotels. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE WITH YOU A SOUTH AFRICA PLUG AND A CONVERTER. Food was acceptable, fruits and vegetables were fresh, tasty and without chemicals. Drink bottled water even though tap water is safe. Staff was friendly as must people in Africa are.

Dear "santiagozamudio",

Greetings from the Protea Hotel Winkler TEAM!

Thank you for choosing to stay at our beloved hotel when visiting the Kruger Park area. Your kind recommendations are much appreciated.

I am surprised to hear about your travel time to the park as the Numbi Gate of the Kruger Park is only 28 km's away from our hotel, so it should not take you more than 25 minutes from door to door. It seems like you or your driver have used a different - further away - entrance to the Kruger park. Our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

We look forward to hosting you again upon your return to South Africa.

Warm regards,

The hotel was clean and near Kruger National Park, which was what we needed it for. The breakfast and dinner buffets were decent, but the staff in the restaurant and the bar were unhelpful. They were rude when you asked for a drink, refused to give change, and were generally unfriendly.

Dear "Smasta",

We would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your comments on your recent stay with us. Although you indicate your stay had been generally comfortable and you enjoyed our facilities and location, I am very disappointed to hear that we have let you down when it comes to the service offering in the restaurant and bar.

Clearly the service experienced in our restaurant was below par on the night of your stay and of an unacceptable standard. I will discuss this matter with our entire team and will take the necessary actions.

We do hope you will allow us the opportunity to host you again in future and convince you of our ability to provide genuine and sincere South African hospitality.

Yours sincerely,
