We really enjoyed our two nights at the Kimberley Club
It successfully combines the opulents of that historical era with a really relaxed, homely atmosphere.
It would be a great pity to miss the opportunity to stay at the club, should you ever decide to visit this wonderfully historical town

Room Tip: I understand that Rooms 1,10 and 12 are considered to be the best rooms We stayed in 2, and loved it

Stayed here for a couple of nights on business. Being winter the room was quite cold even with the heating on. Ate an evening meal in the restaurant on two occassions, food disappointing - onion rings are frozen not fresh. Would strongly recommend eating at Butlers restaurant, 5 minutes from the Club.
Tried to print my boarding pass from the computer but the printer wasn't connected. 2 members of staff tried to assist then walked off saying they didn't know what the problem was! Ordered toast for breakfast which took 20 minutes to arrive! I normally stay at the Estate and would probably not return here.

A step into colonial history, the time of men with grand ideals for the Empire, pioneers of business and exploration.
We arrived rather late but were immediately made welcome the staff were helpful and had us in the room in a matter of minutes.
The room was spacious and warm, (the temp was to drop to minus 3 that night) the historic photographs that adorn the walls managed to keep sleep at bay for quite a while.
The next morning we were ushered into a most quaint wood panelled breakfast room and served a wonderful hearty breakfast watched over by the stately Mr CJ Rhodes himself.
After breakfast we spent a good hour and a half wandering these hallowed halls, where history practically tumbles from the walls.
This is not only a lovely place to stay but a must for any student of South African history.
Please keep it as it is, we will be back for more than a night stop.

This is a quaint hotel situated in the middle of Kimberley, I came across it by accident and will surely stay there again!

The room was quiet spacious, clean and well laid out. The staff was most friendly and helpful at all times.

The only bummer here is the fact that parking is located across the street from the hotel; one wonders how guests cope when it rains.

Although we were unable to stay at the Club we did come through for dinner – it was stunning!!

I have travelled extensively and this was one of the tastiest meals we have had in a very long time. We spoke to Moses (the chef) to pass on our comments but also wanted to let you know what a fantastic job he did – absolutely first class.

We will recommend to any other friends who pass through this way.

Refurbished 19th Century grandeur (1896) that once hosted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I, and of course the haunt of one Cecil J Rhodes. Yes, it's in the middle of town and there's not a manicured garden to be seen. But the building is over a 100 years old and although it's been refurbished don't expect modern and trendy. What you get is real history, so real you actually do feel that you are stepping back in time and there's no way you can recreate that with pictures and furnishings. So I'm happy to overlook the odd imperfection for the experience. Enjoyed dinner and I was really impressed with the breakfast menu. Unlike the standard breakfast buffet fare, it's an a la carte menu - more akin to a Mugg&Bean.

Room Tip: The luxury rooms are good, but I booked a standard room because they open onto a period balcony over...

I read some of the reviews here and note the dissatisfaction of some guests. As someone who has been privileged to stay at the Kimberley Club many many times as a business guest of De Beers, I am struck by the thought that they all miss the point. When I first visited the Kimberley Club it was still a Club, and you got to stay there only by invitation. De Beers was a sponsor of the Club, so VIP guests were put up there as a treat, and a treat it was, In those days the Club was far older and more run down than since it was extensively refurbished and transformed into the boutique hotel it is now. Yet I always felt privileged to stay there, and spent literally hours over the years looking at the wealth of historical memorabilia, marveling at its sense of occasion, and enjoying the atmosphere of great history within its very walls. I reproduce a quote below that explains just a little of that. I have had better food, I have had better service. I have stayed in more comfortable or luxurious rooms. You can stay cheaper elsewhere. And yes, the location on a main road makes it noisy at times. BUT if you go there for the history and atmosphere, you can forgive all that. If you want a quick and easy place to stay, go to the Protea or the Formula 1 or any one of the many private guesthouses in the City. If you are here to compare how many eggs you get for breakfast or the size of the bath, you are missing the point. I must also say in conclusion that a lot of what I say relates more to the per-refurbishment days. Now, the Club is a lot more luxurious and the food and service much improved, but the wonderful history remains.

"Membership of the Kimberley Club in 1881 was limited to 250 members, while today there are over 550 members. Among the many members over the 120 years have been at least four prime ministers, Rhodes, Jameson, John X. Merriman and Sir Charles Metcalfe. The Oppenheimer family has been, or are, all members of the Club. So too were JB Currey, Barney Barnato, Alfred Beit, JH Taylor, JB Robinson, Lionel Phillips, Sir David Harris, Charles Rudd, all truly large names in this country’s history. The President’s Board in the hallway reads like a Who’s Who of South African history, while the Chairman’s Board is a Who’s Who of Kimberley. When one leans on the bar counter, it is humbling to remember that the famous once stood in the very same spot. There are not many Clubs in the world that can give that experience.

Some of the famous visitors to the Club have included the Royal Family in 1947, including both the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother) left a diamond ring in the bathroom which was found after their departure and returned to them. Perhaps the longest any “visitor” has stayed, has been Lt-Colonel Robert George Kekewich, who stayed at the Club for the duration of the siege of Kimberley that lasted 124 days from 14 October 1899 until 15 February 1900. The secretary of the Club during the siege, Tim Tyson, made sure that the Club remained open to members and that food and drink was readily available at all times.

Other important personalities who have visited over the years include Lord Randolph Churchill, the Royal Family in 1947, the Prince of Wales in 1925, Lord Roberts, Lord Kitchener, Lord Methuen, Sir Alfred Milner, Sir Thomas Upington, Sir Hercules Robinson, Henry Scott-Turner, various Directors of De Beers over the years, General French, Field Marshal Montgomery, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen of Jordan, and many, many more too numerous to mention."
