“Luxury in the Bush”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2011

My wife and I, and a friend, had a fabulous week at Bakubung. The timeshare chalet was secluded, excellently designed and comfortable, with beautiful finishes in the bathroom. Outside was a lovely private plunge pool - too cold for this time of year - but ideal for summer. Next time though, I would request a chalet on the 'front' row which overlooks a small water hole to which some of the animals come to drink. Oh, and definitely order the scones - the best I have ever tasted!!

Room Tip: ask for a chalet in the front row

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2011

I've stayed at Bakubung 4 or 5 times over the last 12 years, most recently in April 2011. We were a family of four - 2 adults and 2 children (aged 8 and 6) and we had a family room which consisted of 2 double beds. The rooms had been updated since our last visit - not much difference in the bedroom itself although lighting was improved. The rooms have small refrigerators as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The room was lacking shelf/drawer space for a family of 4. The bathrooms, although small, were significantly improved, especially the showers. Overall, the rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious and are not particularly big for 4 people. An improvement from last time was free internet access in rooms.

The quality of the buffets has always been good with what I would call homestyle food. Breakfasts have the usual range of cold and hot offerings with eggs/omelettes cooked to order. Evening meals always offer at least 2 roasts with starch and vegetables, a number of different casseroles and a pasta bar with a variety of pasta types and sauces - very popular with the children! There are a variety of salads, cold meats etc available for starters as well as soup. There were at least half a dozen desserts laid out, as well as a freezer with (very hard) icecreams and pancakes cooked to order, and an uninspiring cheeseboard. Some evenings are themed and there is an increased range of foods on offer in addition to the usual fare - the Mongolian BBQ can be particularly recommended on Thursdays! Plates were cleared quickly in the restaurant by the many staff - some of whom have been at Bakubung for years and years! Wines are reasonably well priced. An A La Carte menu is also available although we've always stuck with the buffet as we've always paid a room rate which includes Bed, Breakfast and Evening Meal.

Bakubung is a good choice for families. The hotel has a pool and there is a children's outdoor play area with a jungle gym, a trampoline and a large chessboard. There was a bouncy castle up for the duration of our stay too. We didn't use facilities such as the tennis courts.

We always drive ourselves around Pilanesberg and prefer Bakubung to its sister hotel, Kwa Maritane, due to its location. Once through the main park gate, there are a number of different routes that can be taken within the park whereas Kwa Maritane has only one long track for several kilometres. Bakubung also has its own waterhole and over 3 days we saw wildebeest and zebra in the area although a family of warthogs and some waterbuck came virtually right up to the perimeter fence when we left the restaurant after breakfast. Children may also enjoy seeing the snakes in the wildlife centre across from Reception.

From walking in to reception we were looked after. The Lodge and its surroundings were stunning. The food very good with plenty of choice, the staff very helpful and chearful. Drinks reasonable and not the normal hotel prices. I room was fantastic with a lovely view over the watering hole and animals came and went all day and night. Safaris were awesome and worth the early start - all guides were good, we did 4 safaris and they were all very different - the Bri was also worth it
Value for money could not be faulted - we will be back and have recommended to friends already

Lovely and cosy safari hotel. My room was excellent - spacy, beautiful. Food variety was vast and food was excellent. Every morning at 6.30 we started the safari. We saw alltogether 70 animal species: big four, snakes, birds and other animals never seen before. Thanks to our good guides Peter and Sirpa.

We stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is located in a great location viewing Pilanesberg. Food and wine was amazing with reasonable price. We got 2 game drives organised by hotel and it was very good. Staff was friendly however service was too slow 'n reception and restaurant. There is not any attraction to do during night. There are shuttle services to SunCity with a fee. It is the best location if you want to have a game drive in Pilanesberg. We had a relaxing time here and recommend it.

My friends and I came to stay at the Bakubung Bush Lodge for one night while we were in Johannesburg for the World Cup. It was a nice get away, the place was clean and nice and the rooms were very elegantly fitted and designed. The lodged is right next to the game reserve and we went on an evening safari which was freezing cold. Before we had gone on the 3 hour safari, there were problems with the electricity and water. When we returned freezing cold and tired, we found that there was still no proper electricity and thus no clean running cold water. The staff was not helpful and we had to call our tour operator who managed to get us into the sister lodge. It would have been a great experience... but wasnt.

Having just logged on to Trip Advisor's site for the first time in a while We thought to check out the reviews written about the hotel where my wife had arranged to stay after our wedding in Johannesburg it was in 2008 that we stayed and all I can say is that it was the best time of my life ! Put aside the FACT that I had just got married and in the best state of mind possible the hotel and all the arranged trips were absolutely fantastic . The staff and all the guides were so polite and friendly , I don't know how anyone can write a bad review of this hotel We found every aspect perfect !
