Bakubung Bush Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 April 2014 via mobile

I traveled with a group to South Africa for spring break and this was the best way to end our trip. We had an evening and morning game drive with Jared who was excellent- knowledgeable, patient with an energetic group, and just fun to explore the park with. Thank you! I hope to make it back.

Booked for three children and adult and we were given a "family" room with two double beds. There was little room for the children to move or even play a card game. The tv broke down on the 2nd day and they could not repair it. The safe broke the first day and as they will not take responsibility for missing goods we were forced to wait for repairs before we could leave. At 11:15 we were still waiting, ruining our day out at Sun City. The safe was never repaired and we had to put our things into another room. They did compensate by giving us free entry to Sun City but only after we raised a complaint. The first day the room was not cleaned and we were not given any extra toiletries. The second day it was cleaned but no tea or coffee.
This experience was nothing like our previous visit to Kwa Maritane which was what we had tried to book and had been told it was the same. The rooms and facilities are far inferior. Very disappointing!

The shuttle disappointed us - we had to call as they did not come on the set times. Reception disappointed as they were unfriendly. Game drive excellent. Food & Beverage above average. Management visibility poor.

Room Tip: Room facing Pilanesburg game reserve, excellent view.

We spent a long weekend at Bakubung Bush Lodge. It was our first stay there but we will probably not go back. Being used to smaller, more private and intimate bush lodges, Bakubung was far too big for us (approx. 90 rooms in total). Athough the rooms were nice and the food excellent, we did not get the feeling of being away in the bush. The rooms look like a hotel room in a big city and the only time one realised you were in the bush was when sitting outside the restaurant looking at the waterhole.
Kids screaming at the pool, this place is not for couples who seek quietness. The little ones are well looked after though - the lodge offers Junior Ranger courses.
The game drives, however, were excellent. In three days, we saw 3 of the Big 5 twice and our ranger was very knowledgable.
All in all, great for families but not for couples or individuals who look for a relaxed weekend and prefer the quietness of the bush.

This is a beautiful environmenst. I do realize that sometimes a safari cannot go out (weather). In that case the front desk is NOT HELPFUL and does nothing to help us find things to do. Just something would help. No Tree tour or Bird tour or anything like complementary ride to sun city. We are a captured audience.

Room Tip: all rooms seemed good. service except front desk excellent

Great place , great views , friendly people and plenty of wild animals around. The rooms are very clean ( as everything else in the lodge ) . Price is fair ( but the ratio value/price is high ) . Good for families (even with small children) , but I fear that a week might be too much . Better stay for a weekend or 3 days . Highly raccomandable .

My wife and I were working in Jo'burg at the same time so we took the opportunity to stay over for a weekend with our daughter (who was 4 at the time). Bakubung was easy to get to (via a stop off at the Lion Park), as my daughter was not old enough to go on the tours, we arranged for a private safari and we all enjoyed it although now i would just drive ourselves around.

The facilites are excellent, expensive but worth doing. We went in May, the weather was faboulous although the locals were in coasts adn hats as i was in shorts and t-shirts but the restaurant was very good and the hotel clean and the staff very pleasant.
