“Elephant on hotel perimeter!”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

The room was clean and spacious and a short walk to the dining room. The hotel is designed that all rooms appear to overlook the reserve and we had the privilege of a lone elephant at the fence while having breakfast.

The breakfast and dinner selection were excellent (recommend their soup). At breakfast we chose a window seat so that we could look out but unfortunately the staff had placed a table on the other side of the window that they were using to store their cleaning materials, so our view was somewhat obscured by staff going about their duties.

Checkout was a 10 so we decided to take an early morning drive and return to our rooms before then to freshen up before checkout. We put our luggage in the car and placed a "do not disturb" sign on the door so that we could return after our drive, but when we returned found that the room was already being cleaned. The lodge should understand that guests may be on a drive and planning to return before checkout, and not have rooms cleaned unless the guests have paid their bill, but I would also recommend leaving your luggage in the room to ensure complete access before checkout.

Tip - take a game drive provided by the lodge which is included in the rate. It's still good to take a drive in your own car and congratulate yourself on spotting some game, but you are likely to see more game on a guided drive. Take lots of warm gear with you in winter, although blankets are provided.

We stayed in Chalet 229 for a week. It's located some distance from the hotel so privacy and that special bush feel were guaranteed. Our 2 bed self catering chalet was understated but charming and positioned to overlook pristine bushveld. And it lacked for nothing. Two bathrooms, a comfortable queen bed with good linen and wall to wall windows in both the main bedroom and living areas. One is separated from the wild by a 6000 volt electric fence which added a frisson of excitement to our "wild" week. Our preferred game viewing took place from the comfort of our patio. Destructive elephants, sleepy buck, inquisitive warthogs and mischievous monkeys ensured an almost obsessive keen eyed glare over the bush for more sightings. The monkeys are brazen thieves and when spotted in the distance some adroit footwork is required to have you inside the chalet with doors and windows closed or be pillaged and ransacked with adroit dexterity before you know it. The pace otherwise is somnambulant. For those more energetically inclined there are self drives into the park. Mankwe Dam is a most enjoyable stop with a picnic basket or drive a little further on to the Pilansberg Centre which has a rather nice restaurant overlooking a waterhole that has more drinkers and diners of the wild kind than humans on the wooden deck. But once again beware the vervet monkeys. They have mastered the art of the disappearing luncheon! The lodge also provides tennis courts, a very large swimming pool and a restaurant and spa are further indulgences. Other tourist attractions in the area are hot air ballooning, crocodile farms, elephant rides, quad biking, Sun City and the blood curdling slide that divides the meek from the mighty, which had me shrieking fit to start another volcanic eruption and arriving at the bottom sans most of my swim wear. Bakubung is situated in the basin of an extinct volcano. It's hot and hypnotic. And dragging ourselves away from the persuasive intoxication of that rich smelling African earth and silence was almost traumatic. One evening we were terrified by the atavistic roars of a lion directly outside the chalet answered by the equally loud trumpeting of an elephant. The hills literally echoed with the cries. The baboons added their own brand of fearsome barking. We stampeded outside to investigate but the darkness hindered our search and our puny torches had no effect. If the same thing happens to you cast your eyes towards the skies. The Milky Way is breathless.

My husband and I have just come home on Sunday from this amazing lodge. The drive from jo-burg airport was approximately 2-3 hrs. On arrival the service was very warm and we were made at home. Our room on the ground floor was beautiful with a king bed lovely bathroom and the room was very clean. Dinner at night was very very good with a great choice and breakfast was just as good. Alcohol was also very cheap. Our room had a big sliding door so we could sit on our chairs on the grass and watch the animals come to the water hole drinking. (Amazing) Thank you very much to Jarrod who was our guide for two game drives. His knowledge was excellent. We had a small security problem and it was attended to immediately. Thankyou. Over all this is an amazing lodge and we would stay again.

Room Tip: Get a room on the ground floor and they also have villas which we didn't know about.

Awesome accommodation (in the hotel) amazing food and a majestic setting. From the terrace outside the dining/bar area, a large view of the park opens up. A water hole is conveniently located close to the fence, providing wonderful game viewing.
Nothing bad to be said at all.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms allow you to walk out and survey the waterhole and all the game that are drawn he...

Stayed for 2 nights in Feb 2014 and did 2 safari's - one evening drive and one early morning drive.
Wonderful lodge - great restaurants and unique surroundings...
Pool at location as well.
Can only recommend this place which can be combined with a few days in Sun City as well.
We were lucky and saw all the Big Five during the game drives - the chances of seeing the big 5 are a lot bigger when doing the guided drives than on Your own..
Stayed in double room - 2 adults and 2 kids aged 14 & 11 - plenty of space and great room ..!

I've been coming to Bakubung for nearly 17 years now, and it has never deviated from its formula of helpful, friendly service and reasonably appointed and maintained rooms. The game drives are fantastic and the food has gotten much better. The addition of a simple spa for treatments is quite nice. The location is stunning and a Saturday night Bush Braai is a must! But I can't help feeling that they need to step it up a little in terms of a few points to add a fifth star. The activities beyond game drives are limited. The maintenance of the place sometimes leaves a bit to be desired... I went without Internet in my room for two days and it never got fixed. The staff is delightful but a bit slow to deliver at times. Would be good to get exposed to some more of the local African culture besides just Friday night African buffet. I overheard the owner at lunch today that he realizes all this, so hopefully there will be some improvements to really take this amazing place to the next level!

Stayed in lodge 204 overlooking the water hole and looking down the valley into the Pilanesberg. 5 of us staying in the lodge, my adult daughter slept on the pull out bed and found it comfortable enough. Everything we needed was in the lodge and it was serviced every day. Dined at the resteraunt one night and the food was very good. Great place for exploring the Pilanesberg.
