“African Paradise”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

This is an amazing Hotel!! If you are planning a safari to Kruger National Park, set aside a few days to visit Sun City. A two hour drive from Johannesburg and welcome to African Paradise. There are actually 4 hotels, the Cabanas, Cascade, Sun City hotel, and top of the line The Palace. Stayed at the Cabanas first trip..nice but not The Palace. The Palace is Amazing starting with your arrival to the property...GRAND!! You are greeted with a drink while waiting to register, staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Lot's to do if you want to golf, go to the casino, the wave pool, take a hot air balloon, watch the feeding of the crocodiles. For special occasions, you can reserve the top of The Palace for dinner for two. Room was very spacious. Tram will pick you up if you want to visit other hotels or if you want the exercise you can walk. Went during off season so not very crowded.

This is a real 5 star hotel: beautiful lobby and dining room, delightful swimming pool and large, comfy rooms! We were greeted with a bottle of South African wine and a bowl of fresh fruits. If you want to venture outside the hotel, you have free access to the Valley of the Waves. The reception and concierge were very helpful and booked our safari, show in another hotel, and gave us information on the area. The breakfast was delicious. Only the food at the pool was a bit average (but that doesn't mean it was bad!). We would definitely go back!

We stayed here for 4 days in between our South Africa journeys and absolutely loved it. Its safe, beautiful, has (almost too) many attractions, good food, friendly staff, the rooms are very nice, it has anything for young/old/families and its not for from Pretoria. If we want to have a great time this is the place to go...this has nothing to do with Africa though.

Room Tip: If you have a chance to get a suite do so...its a big difference!"

We stayed for 3 nights in a Junior Suite. Check-in was a little slow at 8pm but thereafter service was excellent and the whole Palace experience unbelievable. Breakfast was exceptional as already reported; the concierges got things done quickly for us and the pool area was world class. Our best experience was dinner at The Grill where we were looked after perfectly by Patrick - I had the best fillet steak I have ever had here. The whole met our expectations and the service was excellent.

After staying at the Palace during a trip to the Rugby World cup in 1995 and being blown away by the place, looked forward to a return on a surprise birthday trip for my wife in 2013.
The trip from Johannesburg seemed to take forever, but on arrival, the magnificent architecture was worth the wait. After settling into our room which was comfortable without being brilliant, we had a walk around the hotel which rekindled my amazement of the place. A lavish high tea in the magnificent dining room completed the day.
Activities were organised from another building in the complex so a short shuttle bus ride was necessary to access it. At one point we missed the shuttle bus by a minute or 2 and as this would have meant we would miss out on our scheduled tour departure, I was surprised to be offered a ride to the activities centre in one of several Mercedes limousines the property seemed to have on call.
While there were plenty of activities, the prices were pretty steep and it was difficult to organise some of them within our limited time available.
One of my major disappointments was that the pool area was closed for cleaning and although it was "winter", the weather certainly was not cold. The closure also meant that the "Lost City" attraction around which the "legend" of the palace is built, with its fake earthquake etc, was not operating either.
While we were there, a major conference for a South African brewery was in progress so it seemed like the whole world had congregated on this isolated place.
Considering the prices, signs of age and the closure of some of its features, I was a bit disappointed that the Palace did not live up to my earlier memories but it remains a spectacular hotel.

Hotel staff are very rude hotel is very old and crap highly overrated suggest people to go to Atlantis in Dubai instead and if you want to go please go during winter also in family room there is a sofa cum bed which is in very bad state and I don't recommend your child to sleep on it so in case you decide to visit this hotel ever please book two rooms

I have wanted to visit this hotel for 20 years and finally got to do so in April 2014. The building is simply magnificent. Take the time to enjoy it and have a look around. I went to the top floor of the hotel and couldn't believe the detail on the roof! We were told that Breakfast was outstanding, it wasn't and neither was the food in general, until we found The Grill Room (an onsite restaurant tucked away under the Tusk Bar), then the food went from disappointing to superb! We even had a Salt & Pepper 'Menu'. The Meerlust wine is a MUST as is a dawn hot air balloon ride! The walk to the Brewery through the maze is fun. The continual line of drivers in Mercs to take you wherever you want to go within Sun City really makes you feel special. Sun City itself is tired, very tired and is in desperate need of reinventing itself. It's tacky and smells of cigarettes. I wouldn't intentionally go back, but if I found myself in South Africa again, I wouldn't miss the opportunity to book a room, a meal in The Grill Room and a bottle of Meerlust.
