“A true five star establishment”
Reviewed 28 October 2011

These days it is difficult to find the quality of service and excellence that a five rating implies. From the moment we arrived to the the moment we left for the airport we were treated as though we were family. Not only is the location superb and simply beautiful, the atmosphere of the house is very intimate and classy. Rudolph was a magnificent host, there was nothing that was too much to ask. He went above and beyond to ensure that we not only enjoyed our time at the house, but also had many great suggestions for restaurants and day trips.

Compass House is in a class by itself.

Out of 31 countries I've traveled to in my life so far, and countless hotels, the Compass House is our very favorite. I can not commend it to you enough. We wanted to move in for the rest of our lives. The design and view are gorgeous, and Rudolph's service was superb, we wish we could have adopted him. After flying 25 hours from Texas to Dubai to Cape Town, a couple days relaxing on the back patio got us feeling normal again. We loved running from the hotel down to the Clifton Beaches (it felt like California to me) and eating at SALT in the neighborhood. Hiking Lion's Head was a great short hike and so scenic! Our Bikes and Wines tour in Stellenbosch was so much fun, and going shark cage diving in Gansbaai was interesting too. We loved Cape Town and even though it is seriously far to get to for us, we will be back. We also stayed in Hilton downtown on it's opening night, for a few nights; and we are Hilton Honors Gold members- but we MUCH preferred and were missing Compass House when we did so.

Gorgeous views in a perfect location (but not near the city centre). We loved our room and sitting on the terrace in the early evening. We felt so completely at home - this stylish hotel is superbly managed. Excellent breakfasts. Highly recommended.

My husband and I began our annual vacation by staying in the Compass House in September 2011. It was a great beginning to a wonderful vacation in South Africa.

Renting a car in S.A. is a given and thus the location of the C.H. is ideal, with everything you would want to visit being easy to reach in 5-15 min.

The house and premises are first class; breathtakingly beautiful inside and out, super clean and comfortable.  Detail oriented perfection is the team's goal and it is evident at every level, creating a relaxing and quiet atmosphere.

The owner and his team put the wellbeing of all their guests in the forefront. Also worth mentioning are the breakfast (nicests breakfasts we had in all of S. A.), fantastic seaviews from almost every place in the house, great bathrooms and good internet, the latter of which is not usual at all in S.A.

From the welcome to the good-bye a week later we were treated at the same time like VIPs and friends: we were very comfortable and pampered.

In short, we felt that we had our own luxury seaside home for a week and not a room in an annonymous 5 star hotel.

Having lived in South Africa for almost 10 years and having seen many hotels in the country, we give the Compass House two thumbs up. Located at the most prestigious bay at the cape (Bantry Bay) Compass House offers a very warm and welcoming team who goes the extra mile to comfort you, the cosiness and intimacy of a family home and top interior design with outstanding finishes (no wonder, the owner is Swiss !!). At this price it is the very best I have experienced in Cape Town so far !

Room Tip: All rooms looked great !

Compass House is located in Bantry Bay, the Beverly Hills of Cape Town. The houses are situated along the side of a steep hill which guarantees breathtaking views! We felt very safe in the area where even the locals left their convertible luxury cars parked with the top down. The V&A Waterfront is a 15 minutes drive away, while the hotel’s location is also very convenient for excursions to the Cape Peninsula, False Bay and the wine regions.

The owners spared no expense in furbishing the hotel to a high standard - the fading lights for example were a nice touch. The rooms are large, elegant and have good sound insulation. The ones on the bottom floor each have a little patio with a table and chairs. The infinity pool with spectacular views is another 5-10 meters away. We just couldn't get enough of comfortable deck chairs and watching the waves break on the rocks at the bottom of the hill. Despite the close proximity of the pool to the rooms, the architect did a great job is preserving the guests privacy.

We were spoilt for choice with delicious fresh food and pastries for breakfast. Thanks to the Swiss owner, they even had our favourite Finn Crisp crackers! The dining area was spacious and the tables were nicely spread. The honesty bar system, inside and by the pool, we felt fits well with such an elegant hotel.

The service was impeccable and very personal. The manager was more than happy to take his time and share with us lots! of good tips for dining and places to visit.

There actually no criticism at all we can think of...
The Compass House will now be our top choice in Cape Town our is quite possibly our new favourite hotel in the world!

Room Tip: Rightmost room has most privacy on ground floor.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful, in a perfect location perched on the cliffs of Bantry Bay and with a sunset view that cannot be faulted. We found this hotel to be extremely peaceful, relaxing and it felt like a (very beautiful) home from home. The honesty bar is a great touch so that you can help yourself to tea, coffee or even champagne.

The room was amazing with a lot of storage space and a large bathroom. The patio doors open onto the pool area and straight out onto the ocean view. So so beautiful - words cannot describe so I have uplodaed a photo! The only downside was that the kingsize bed was two beds pushed together, which I don't personally like - I'd prefer one big bed but I do understand why they go for this option.

Having read all of the reviews we were looking forward to our arrival, but unfortunately it wasn't like those described below - the lady on reception could not recommend us a local restaurant when we arrived (at 18:30) and did not show us around the hotel or offer us a drink (or show us where to get a drink). We got quite a baffled look when we asked for a restaurant recommendation (in fact ANY restaurant in the local area as we were tired after the flight and just wanted to eat and sleep) and were instead handed a magazine listing Cape Town's 100 best restuarants... However, when we met Rudolph and Olivier the next day we found them to be more than helpful and I am sure our arrival would have been better with them.

Apart from this tiny downside we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and cannot recommend the hotel enough - it is absolutely perfect and we would certainly come again. Thank you Compass House!
