If this isn’t the best accommodation in Cape Town, I don’t know what is. A swarm of hotel staff greeted us on arrival, including the manager – all warm, engaging and genuinely caring. An upgrade to the Ellerman Suite (Room 7) in the gabled roof of this elegant, sprawling mansion was a real treat. A large lounge and separate bedroom with viewsome balconies overlooking a spectacular, glistening bay. Friends had an equally gorgeous room with dining room, lounge and same gobsmacking views.
Meticulous attention to detail is the hallmark of this ‘residence’ – more a luxury home than a hotel. All public areas are superbly comfortable but it’s the art that really blows you away. Extraordinary stuff hanging on every wall…and that’s before you get to the purpose built gallery! The food is also sublime – every meal was exceptional, including one of the best desserts every eaten. Lunch or dinner on the terrace with the extraordinary view is a sublime experience. We grabbed the offer of romantic dinner on the terrace, candles and moonlight over the ocean – stuff of dreams.
Nick Dreyer the GM oversees a team of truly dedicated staff, constantly anticipating your every desire without ever being intrusive. There’s a lovely lawn with a beautiful swimming pool that’s a great place to relax.
With so much to do in Cape Town we got lots of good advice on where to go and what to do from the team, even landing a reservation at newest/hottest restaurant in town that’s usually booked out for weeks. The beauty of Ellerman is that it’s away from the crowds and hoi polloi, but still close to all attractions via the resident driver. Everything was seamless and flawlessly executed. We loved this place and can’t wait to go back.

I stayed in room 8, was very lovely. view of the ocean and palm tree.
The staff is incredible here and can accomplish any feat. The lawn/pool area is very nice and relaxing and to hear and see the sea is just great.
room was large and comfortable. drinks are included in rate except wine. Breakfast was lovely and dinner was even better. I ate there every day.
There is a computer in the library for internet. The hotel car can take you to the waterfront
if its free.
I wouldnt hesitate to put a client here and will definately be back in the future.

This is a belated review from 2010 and before.
My wife and I stayed at Ellerman House. The first room was beautiful, the second time a year later we were upgraded and the room was superb with a corner wrap around balcony viewing the sea and the Lions head.
the hotel only caters for resident guests for dinner thus keeping it perfect!
We have travelled the world and have been fortunate to stay in many of the top hotels. This still remains our favourite. My parents stayed with us in a two bedroom suite at the Cape Grace (our second favourite hotel and which they loved) and then at Ellerman House. For them this was the crowning glory of a life times travel.
Ellerman House and Cape Grace offer what the rest of Africa should aspire to.
Please do not change!

Stayed at Ellerman House in past years. This Feb trip was utterly spectacular. The fundamentals of the house - peerless situation and views, major major art collection, glamorous rooms - haven't changed but new additions are awesome. Visionary new gallery in the grounds, wonderful replantings of African plants in the gardens and water lilies around the house. It is beautiful. Best are the staff and the atmosphere they create - the place feels younger, livelier, more energetic than before. This hotel is obviously world-class, but mostly because it runs as the most elegant house party, relaxed but I guess with huge amounts of work to get it so. Tiny things - free laundry when other places want to charge you for wifi - underpin it. In contrast, two other places we stayed in on this trip can't come near it. One and Only big, glitzy, urban and anonymous (could be anywherre). Cellars Hohenhort (also Relais), slightly tired, beautiful gardens but feels slow and a bit sad, like an English seaside hotel.

Private, outstanding service and views to die for. The pool is fabulous. The rooms are luxurious. Well worth the price tag but book early. Regulars have their favourite rooms and their regular times of year and they appear to come back year after year. Next time in Cape Town, it has to be Ellerman.
