We stayed for 3 nights at POD. The location is great, just a street behind the beach with views of the ocean. We stayed 2 nights in a luxury room without pool and 1 night in a luxury room with pool.

Luxury room with pool: these rooms are on the ground floor, so you could hear the murmur of voices from reception. The balcony area is nice and spacious and becomes a sun trap in the late afternoon however, the rooms are only slightly elevated from street level so they aren't very private.

Luxury room without pool: these rooms are higher up so have better views. The balcony area is smaller and doesn't attract as much sun. We found it wasn't that comfortable to sit there anyway - the chairs could really do with some cushions! This is obviously the pool area though if you are interested in sun bathing.

Both rooms had a free mini bar which was a nice touch. Note that as some other people have mentioned bathroom privacy is slightly compromised over style. When using the bathroom mirror / sink you have a full view of whoever is in the shower. The toilet is in an opaque glass box so isn't that private either.

The bar staff and staff at breakfast were very friendly.

Issues:

Treatments: don't bother. There is a spa round the corner which is cheaper & much more professional. We had booked in for a morning treatment and we were told to wait in the room. 10 mins later we were still waiting as the therapist had overrun her earlier appointment. 30 mins later and we were still waiting. We ended up cancelling the appointment; the receptionists couldn't even tell us when they thought the therapist would be ready. It messed up all our plans for the morning. The hotel simply should not be booking therapists who don't stick to their timetable and update their clients if there is a delay. Unacceptable in a five star hotel.

The receptionists were very friendly and welcoming however they could be a bit more clued up. We wanted to go to Babel (a restaurant in the vineyards) but the receptionist didn't have a clue where it was - this is one of the restaurants that is specifically recommended by POD!! When we said this he said ah okay and he thought he knew where it was and booked us a taxi. When we got in the cab we double checked with the driver but he had been told somewhere completely different (in Cape Town). Another time we asked what time a specific market shut and were told 6pm. I double checked on Google to discover it shut at 2pm. Thankfully we had checked otherwise we would have missed it entirely. We were very clear as to what market we were referring to so we can't understand how they got this wrong. After these two incidents we gave up asking the reception staff for recommendations and advice and stuck to google. Disappointing particularly from a boutique hotel when you expect local knowledge.

Dear Kate

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed report about your recent stay with us at POD Camps Bay.

Your constructive criticism is warmly received as it highlights a few weaknesses in our hotel operation that I am currently addressing.

We have just received a delivery of Ecophon sound absorbing panels that will be installed in our reception area. This will greatly improve the acoustics in the reception area and ensure that sound does not travel down the corridor towards the Luxury rooms with plunge pools.

Our building is angled in a Westerly direction in order to attract the afternoon sun. In autumn and winter the angle of the sun changes slightly and we do loose a bit of sun on the balconies of the Luxury rooms, thankfully for 8 months of the year the balconies are basked in afternoon sunlight as the sun sets in a direct line with the focal point of our property.

I agree that the balcony chairs are not comfortable for sitting for extended periods and we have looked at many options for cushions. We are currently finalizing a soft refurbishment and the chairs are an item that we have identified to replace.

Thank you for the praise on the complimentary mini bars, this is one of the many value adds that we have recently introduced that we have received many compliments about to date.

The open plan bathroom design was a conscious architectural choice and I am afraid that there is nothing that we can do to change this layout.

I have relayed your compliment on the breakfast and bar staff to Lewis, Kudzai, Sandisile and Brian.

Our wellness room is operated by an outsourced company and I sincerely apologize for the booking issue that you experienced with them. Having ones plans messed around with can be incredibly frustrating, especially when one only has a few days to take in all of what our beautiful city has to offer. I have taken this issue up with the therapist on duty as well as the owner of the spa and hope to establish exactly where the issue came in and how to avoid this happening in the future.

Thankfully we do have the Langaro spa within a 2 minute walk from the hotel and I am glad that we were able to confirm a booking for you on the same day.

I am incredibly disappointed by reading your feedback on the reception team. We pride ourselves in our local knowledge and have been commended hundreds of times for our knowledge, professionalism and our willingness to share this information with our guests. I am sorry that we did not live up to this expectation in our interactions with you.

I find it difficult to believe that the gentleman (our most experienced duty manager) that you spoke to did not know about Babel as not only is it in our recommended restaurants document and on our website but he has eaten at Babel and been wine tasting there twice. I can only put this down to being a total misunderstanding of where you wanted to go.

We have also cross referenced the operating hours of the market and we were correct in advising of the closing time.

Again, my sincerest apologies for the above and thank you for your valued feedback. As a property committed to continually improving standards, it is incredibly helpful to us to receive criticism in order to learn, adapt and ensure that the same mistakes are not made again.

Should there be anything further that you would like to discuss or bring to my attention, please do not hesitate to contact me at brendan@pod.co.za

Warm regards,

Brendan Boyle

We have just returned from spending 8 days at the Pod hotel in Camps Bay. Wow! The location is exceptional, there is approximately one member of staff per room and as such service is without equal. Every member of the team goes out of their way to make every guest feel special, but a special mention to Lewis/Louis(?) whose timing with a glass of Chardonnay was phenomenal! We are experienced travellers over many years, and our experience at the Pod contributed massively to our two weeks in Cape Town being our best holiday ever. Highly recommended, Garry & Tricia.

Pods is practically located on the beach-just cross one street and you're there. The service was excellent: we had a late flight and were allowed to use the hotel lobby, pool, shower, carpark etc and (real bonus!) they let us use a beach-package with towels, beachmats, cold water etc. The rooms are nice with cool design although i would recommend sharing with someone you know well as the bathroom is open to the room.

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us at POD Camps Bay.

It's great to hear that you enjoyed your time with us and that you liked the location, room and the beach service.

The use of our facilities was an absolute pleasure, should we have had a vacant room available we would have gladly offered it to you for a late check out as well.

As mentioned in your review, the bathroom and bedroom are open plan and the hotel is best suited to couples.

We absolutely loved this tiny gem of a boutique hotel! Every single detail -- from the bathroom amenities to the in-room Nespresso machine, from the delicious (included) breakfast to the gorgeous infinity-edge pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean -- was so well thought out. The service was fantastic, from the barman to the front desk team to the cleaning staff. Our room was spacious, functional and had a gorgeous view. We couldn't have asked for a better introduction to South Africa, a place that we absolutely fell in love with from the moment we arrived at the POD Hotel. Thank you for a wonderful stay -- we hope to be back one day!

Room Tip: Just 25 rooms on two floors -- the second floor has a better view and one side overlooks the ocean...

Cool beyond question is POD Camps Bay. A true Africa original realised in a stunning set of decor elements, POD is both raw yet polished. See naked Africa design timber dropping into stone, shifting into glass, imbuing a sense of seaside sophistication so often attempted but so rarely achieved. 17 modern suites and rooms share the spoils of idyllic mountain and ocean views. Truly surprising is POD's proximity to the famous and ever energised Camps Bay beachfront, just a few light footsteps away.
