We stayed for 3 nights at POD. The location is great, just a street behind the beach with views of the ocean. We stayed 2 nights in a luxury room without pool and 1 night in a luxury room with pool.
Luxury room with pool: these rooms are on the ground floor, so you could hear the murmur of voices from reception. The balcony area is nice and spacious and becomes a sun trap in the late afternoon however, the rooms are only slightly elevated from street level so they aren't very private.
Luxury room without pool: these rooms are higher up so have better views. The balcony area is smaller and doesn't attract as much sun. We found it wasn't that comfortable to sit there anyway - the chairs could really do with some cushions! This is obviously the pool area though if you are interested in sun bathing.
Both rooms had a free mini bar which was a nice touch. Note that as some other people have mentioned bathroom privacy is slightly compromised over style. When using the bathroom mirror / sink you have a full view of whoever is in the shower. The toilet is in an opaque glass box so isn't that private either.
The bar staff and staff at breakfast were very friendly.
Treatments: don't bother. There is a spa round the corner which is cheaper & much more professional. We had booked in for a morning treatment and we were told to wait in the room. 10 mins later we were still waiting as the therapist had overrun her earlier appointment. 30 mins later and we were still waiting. We ended up cancelling the appointment; the receptionists couldn't even tell us when they thought the therapist would be ready. It messed up all our plans for the morning. The hotel simply should not be booking therapists who don't stick to their timetable and update their clients if there is a delay. Unacceptable in a five star hotel.
The receptionists were very friendly and welcoming however they could be a bit more clued up. We wanted to go to Babel (a restaurant in the vineyards) but the receptionist didn't have a clue where it was - this is one of the restaurants that is specifically recommended by POD!! When we said this he said ah okay and he thought he knew where it was and booked us a taxi. When we got in the cab we double checked with the driver but he had been told somewhere completely different (in Cape Town). Another time we asked what time a specific market shut and were told 6pm. I double checked on Google to discover it shut at 2pm. Thankfully we had checked otherwise we would have missed it entirely. We were very clear as to what market we were referring to so we can't understand how they got this wrong. After these two incidents we gave up asking the reception staff for recommendations and advice and stuck to google. Disappointing particularly from a boutique hotel when you expect local knowledge.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Cool beyond question is POD Camps Bay. A true Africa original realised in a stunning set of decor elements, POD is both raw yet polished. See naked Africa design timber dropping into stone, shifting into glass, imbuing a sense of seaside sophistication so often attempted but so rarely achieved. 17 modern suites and rooms share the spoils of idyllic mountain and ocean views. Truly surprising is POD's proximity to the famous and ever energised Camps Bay beachfront, just a few light footsteps away. It is little wonder that POD appears on the Condé Nast Hot List 2011, and finds its place among Tatler's 101 Best Hotels in the World. ... more less
